Residential
Commercial Systems
Residential system typically have up to four
PV strings. Systems of this size should
have the same level of protection and safety
as larger installations. With DC switch
disconnect, fuse protection and PV surge
protection you can be sure the Cooper
Bussmann Combiner Box will provide the
necessary protection to the PV system and
operating environment.
Commercial roof type installations have a larger number of options based on
the installation design. Owing to the higher power generation and increased
installation size, these systems have increased string counts requiring larger
combiner boxes and higher system current ratings. Scaling with the needs of
these systems the Cooper Bussmann Combiner Box provides DC switch
disconnection to isolate the PV array from downstream components, critical
for safe system maintenance. Positive and negative PV fuses protection
safeguards the PV panels from overcurrent faults and protects downstream
cables, minimizing fire hazards. As with residential installations, a surge
protective device provides protection of the sensitive PV panels from
overvoltage surges and spikes.

How Photovoltaic Power Systems Work
ɀ PV solar cells are made from semi-conductor materials which convert solar (light) energy into DC electricity
ɀ PV solar cells are connected in series to form a PV module.
ɀ To generate higher power PV modules are connected in series to form a PV string.
ɀ PV strings are connected in parallel often by means of a combiner box to generate higher current.
ɀ The DC voltage/current is inverted into an AC voltage/current and fed into the grid.

industrial or high condensation external environments.
ɀ 4-24 Strings covering up to 1000Vdc/400A ratings, suitable for all applications large or

ɀ Constructed out of corrosion free GRP for superior quality and prolonged product life. The
body is UV stable and IP55 rated, making it suitable for typical PV environments.
ɀ For increased safety and to insure the contents are tamper resistant the combiner box
benefits from having a lockable external switch, only allowing trained professionals access

Photovoltaic Module Construction Explained
ɀ A number of individual cells are combined in a panel or module.
ɀ A number of PV modules in series is a string.
ɀ A number of strings in parallel is an array.
The voltage output of a Solar Module or Array is defined by the number of individual cells in
series. An individual panel is made up of a series string of photovoltaic cells. Each cell is
usually between 4’’ and 6’’ square.
