Inpatient neurologic care is delivered at three hospitals, though primarily at the University Hospital, a 526-bed
tertiary and primary care center located on the east edge of Salt Lake City. It is the only academic medical center in
the intermountain west. The highest acuity neurology patients are treated in our 23-bed clinically dedicated
neurology-neurosurgery intensive care unit (NCC). Neurology patients may transition to a step-down unit (IMCE:
Intermediate Medical Care Unit) prior to transferring to the neuro-ward: a 34-bed neurology/neurosurgery bay
containing suites for extended video-electroencephalographic monitoring of patients with seizures. An Emergency
Department Observation Unit (ED/OU) facilitates emergent evaluations on patients not requiring an admission to
the hospital lasting greater than 24 hours, and thus is commonly used by the neurology service as a way to triage
evaluations of patients with disorders such as new onset seizures.
The Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) is located approximately one half mile from the
University of Utah Health Sciences Center. The George E. Wahlen VAMC is the largest veterans’ facility in the
Intermountain West, located on an 81-acre campus. It is a 121-bed tertiary care facility, and is one of the most
modern hospitals in the VA system. The VAMC has its own up-to-date EEG and EMG laboratories, as well as new
MRI and CT units and facilities for conventional angiography. In addition, several laboratories are housed here
which participate in cutting-edge research in the areas of neuro-immunology and paraneoplastic neurology.
Primary Children's Hospital (PCH)) is the major primary and tertiary care center for pediatric patients in the
Intermountain West. The present facility, which opened in 1990, is adjacent to the University of Utah Health
Sciences Center and comprises 289 beds. Clinical services include a 32-bed state -of-the-art pediatric intensive care
unit, a 48 bed neonatal intensive care unit, 30-bed infant unit, a 28-bed rehabilitation wing, facilities for both
inpatient and outpatient care, and a 26-bed rapid treatment room for children requiring a hospital stay of less than 24
hours.
Outpatient clinics occur both at the VA Hospital and also through the University. Those through University
Hospital take place in 5-story Clinical Neurosciences Center (CNC), connected to University Hospital via a walkway. In this building, neuroradiology has attending and resident coverage for neuroradiological consultation. This
center of excellence houses the academic offices of neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology, and is the site of
resident continuity clinic. Neurosurgery holds their clinics, too, in the same clinics as neurology, allowing for
immediate neurosurgical consultation when necessary. There area total of 44 clinical examination rooms - 22 of
them for neurology and 22 rooms for neurosurgery, 4 neuromuscular suites for electrodiagnostic testing
(NCS/EMG), two nursing stations, as well as out-patient neurosurgical surgery suites and MRI/general radiology.
We also have a second clinic, called the Imaging and Neurosciences Center (INC), which is a 12,000 square foot
clinic held in Research Park, located just 5 minutes from the hospital campus and linked via shuttle. Subspecialty
neurology clinics are held here (Dementia Clinic, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, Movement Disorder, autonomic testing
lab space), while nearly all others are located in the CNC. A few clinics, such as HIV-Neurology, neuro-oncology,
neuro-ophthalmology, are held at other sites.
