August is Preparing to Teach
Month
With the fall term just around the corner, we're
focusing on preparing to teach. We'll be hosting
three major teaching events in August our
Contract Instructor Orientation, New Faculty
Orientation and our Teaching and Learning
Services Forum. You can also check out
our website over the course of the month for a
series of blogs that discuss learning about
teaching and highlight reflections from faculty
members about their first years of teaching.
We Want To Hear From
You!
Do you want to present a
teaching roundtable? Have an
idea for a workshop topic? Or
have some thoughts on how we
could improve our services or
offer different programs? The
Office of the Associate Vice
President (Teaching and
Learning) wants to hear from
you! Contact us
at oavptl@carleton.ca or at ext.
2344.
Teaching and Learning
Services Forum just weeks
away!
Kick off the fall term on August 27 with our
Teaching and Learning Services Forum. Hear from
Dr. Joy Mighty, Associate VicePresident
(Teaching and Learning), as she discusses
Teaching and Learning Services' (TLS) initiatives
for the upcoming year. You'll also learn from
Carleton community leaders in a cracker barrel
session (a series of small group discussions).
Some confirmed presenters include: Adrian Chan
Please register in
advance for the events
(Engineering and Design), Kevin Cheung (Math),
Janna Fox (SLaLS), Shawn Graham (History),
Kanina Holmes (Journalism) and Tim Pychyl
(Psychology).
Tentative Schedule:
10 10:45 a.m.: Remarks by Dr. Joy
Mighty, with an introduction of Teaching and
Learning Services and a review of this
year’s initiatives supporting the Carleton
teaching and learning community
10:45 11 a.m.: Break
11 a.m. 12:20 p.m.: Cracker barrel
session
12:20 1:20 p.m.: Lunch (provided),
networking and closing
Please RSVP here. Cell phones in the classroom
Cell phone use in the classroom is often seen as
something worthy of reprimand. It’s a distraction,
a bad habit. But two professors at Carleton are
actually encouraging students to use cell phones
in class. Kim Hellemans and Bruce Tsuji talked
about why and how they did it at the 2013
Canadian Network for Innovation in Education
annual conference, which was held this year
Carleton. CUOL talked to each professor and got
summaries of their joint presentations. Read all
about it in the July/August issue of OnLine Focus,
CUOL's monthly newsletter.

Registration now open for the
EDC's Preparing to Teach
certificate program
PhD candidates interested in pursuing a career in
academia can now register for the fall cohort of
the EDC’s Preparing to Teach program.
This program offers a unique opportunity to gain
indepth knowledge about teaching in a post
secondary environment. During the course of nine
threehour sessions, you’ll cover topics such as
assessment, feedback and learnercentered
teaching all while completing a number of
practical assignments, including designing a
course, preparing a lesson plan, microteaching
and drafting a teaching philosophy statement.
While informed by theory, the focus of the
program is on teaching practice. You’ll develop
new course materials and try out various teaching
approaches within a supportive peer environment.
The fall cohort will run Wednesdays from 1 – 4
p.m. beginning October 2 and ending December 4,
with no session during the fall break. Registration
is capped at 20 participants and spots will fill up
quickly, so apply today!
