On August 28, 1963, an estimated 250,000 people converged on Washington, dC, to take part in the march on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. it
was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement: a huge and peaceful
demonstration for racial and economic equality. Capped by the rev. martin
Luther King, Jr.’s “i Have a dream” speech, the march helped usher in sweeping civil rights legislation and a sea change in public opinion.
WGBH is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the march with a series of
programs and resources on television, radio and the Web. Look for coverage
throughout August, culminating in 24 hours of special programming starting
tuesday evening,
August 27, with the
premiere of The
March, a riveting
new television
documentary that
takes a fresh look
not only at the
unfolding events
and key individuals
involved in this
historic moment, but also the behind-the-scenes conflict between those
supporting and opposing it (page 18, with related programming on the World
channel, page 22).
Our radio services pick up the baton Wednesday, August 28, when
89.7 WGBH Boston Public radio shares the stories behind the story (page 26),
including a fascinating bit of WGBH history: eight years before nPr hit the
airwaves, WGBH was one of a small group of public radio stations there to
broadcast the march. Back in our Boston studios, the quarter-inch tape was
rolling, recording speeches delivered by dr. King and John Lewis of the
student nonviolent Coordinating Committee (snCC), music performed by a
very young Bob dylan and Joan Baez, and much more—15 hours in all.
in 2011, with grant funding, WGBH was able to digitize those fragile tapes
(the only ones in existence!). those recordings are part of WGBH’s extensive
media archives, and just one of many treasures we are excited to preserve
and share (wgbh.org/march), with more to come.
Our celebration of the 50th anniversary of the march ends on an uplifting,
lyrical note with 99.5 WCrB Classical new england’s A Beautiful Symphony of
Brotherhood, a live broadcast of the Boston Landmark Orchestra’s August 28
outdoor concert at the Hatch shell on Boston’s esplanade, featuring evocative
music, stirring words and special guests (page 27).
Capturing powerful and important moments, offering diverse perspectives and inspiration…it all happens thanks to your generous ongoing
support of WGBH.

Downton Abbey Revisited
Downton Abbey Revisited brings you great
moments from the series’ first three
seasons, along with cast interviews and
rare behind-the-scenes footage. Revisit
what befell the Crawleys as they entered
the roaring twenties, what became of
Bates, what mischief villainous footman
Thomas and scheming lady’s maid O’Brien
instigated, and who was left at the altar. And, of course, how the formidable
dowager Countess (Dame Maggie Smith) handled the arrival of Lady
Grantham’s American mother (Shirley MacLaine). Angela Lansbury hosts.
Alfie Boe: Storyteller at
The Royal Albert Hall
Sarah Brightman: Dreamchaser in Concert
Sarah Brightman has done it all: pioneered the
classical crossover genre, sold more than 30
million albums worldwide and become the only
artist to perform the theme song at two Olympics.
But she’s not looking back. With her new album
Dreamchaser, Sarah is embarking on what she
calls “the greatest adventure I can imagine”:
exploring her lifelong dream to travel into space.
In this new PBS special, Brightman brings forth
her fantasy in a concert that is based on the futuristic, otherworldly vision behind Dreamchaser. Songs include “One
Day Like This,” a unique depiction of British band Elbow’s legendary
song; “Closer,” featuring a breathtaking new arrangement of Mike
Oldfield’s Tubular Bells; and a stunning rendition of Sigur Rós’s
“Glósóli,” featuring new English lyrics by Chris Difford of Squeeze.
Inside Foyle’s War

Kitchen) has built a worldwide fan base
over six seasons as the articulate sleuth in

crimes penned by Anthony Horowitz.

scenes of this award-winning WGBH Masterpiece Mystery! series. You’ll meet
the actors, writers and directors who have made Foyle’s War so addictive.
You’ll also get a sneak peek at what fans have been waiting for: a brand-new
season of Foyle’s War, (Series 7), premiering Sunday, September 15.
Smarter Brains
What is intelligence? And can it be
increased? This special uncovers the
latest research that is redefining intelligence throughout our lifespan. Recent
findings in neuroscience and psychology
suggest that not only can we make ourselves smarter, but we can use everyday techniques and skills to help keep ourselves smart and vibrant throughout
our lives. You’ll hear from leading neuroscientists, psychologists and experts
from around the world who explain the different types of intelligence; how
artificial and human intelligence compare; and how social interaction, exercise and challenges affect our intelligence and the aging process.
Platinum-selling superstar and Tony Award
winner Alfie Boe brings his second television
concert special to PBS. Storyteller features a
full 19-piece band and a wide selection of
favorites, including Roy Orbison’s “It’s Over” and
“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore,” Elvis
Presley’s “It’s Only Love” and “If I Can Dream,”
The Rolling Stones’ “Shine a Light,” and Boe’s acclaimed “Bring Him Home”
from his turn as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables.
David Garrett—Live in Concert
Star violinist David Garrett, backed by his band
and the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt, delivers a
stirring evening of performances at this live,
sold-out concert filmed at TUI Arena in Hanover,
Germany. Garrett’s virtuosity and versatility are on
full display as he moves seamlessly across musical
eras and styles, from Beethoven to The Beatles,
Coldplay to Clementi. Don’t miss this stunning,
soulful concert punctuated with eye-popping backdrops and soaring pyrotechnics.
Gloria Estefan: The Standards
It’s been Gloria Estefan’s lifelong dream to
record an entire album of standards—songs
that have special meaning in her life. And now
she’s done it with her new album, Gloria
Estefan The Standard, featuring songs written
by some of our most prolific songwriters,
including Jerome Kern, Charlie Chaplin and
George Gershwin. In this special, the Grammy
Award winner performs The Standards with
the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, led and
conducted by Grammy Award nominee Shelly
Berg at the renowned New World Center. Songs
include the Billie Holiday classic “Good Morning
Heartache,” Estefan’s adaptation of Chaplin’s
“Smile,” and the first song Estefan sang with Emilio and the Miami Latin Boys,
“What a Difference a Day Makes.”

Rehabilitating Juvenile
Justice
America’s reliance on juvenile
incarceration is the highest in the
world among developed nations,
and that has serious implications for the future of our nation’s
at-risk youth and our finances. It
costs approximately $88,000 per
year to send a kid to juvenile incarceration and nearly 70 percent of
them are re-arrested after release. Is there an alternative to this broken
system of kids cycling in and out of the juvenile justice system? A
group of reformers applies the restorative justice principles of the
Maori people of New Zealand to the mean streets of Baltimore. Can
the wisdom of the Maori help fix juvie justice?

Israel Revealed
P.O.V. travels to Israel in two new programs. In The Law in These Parts,
acclaimed Israeli filmmaker Ra’anan Alexandrowicz examines the system of military administration used by Israel since the Six Day War of
1967. Through candid interviews with Israeli judges, prosecutors and
legal advisers who helped devise the occupation’s legal framework,
the film paints a complex picture of the Middle East conflict and the
delicate balance between political and security interests and human
rights. In 5 Broken Cameras, Palestinian farmer and filmmaker Emad
Burnat follows one West Bank
family’s evolution over five years.
The result is a deeply personal,
firsthand account of life and nonviolent resistance in Bil’in, a West
Bank village where Israel is building a security fence.

Bringing You the World
The World channel, WGBH’s expanded national TV
and Web service, offers the best of PBS news and
nonfiction programming (Nova, Frontline, American
Experience, PBS NewsHour, Nature, Independent Lens
and P.O.V, to name a few) along with unique series like AfroPop, Global Voices,
Voces and Pacific Heartbeat. The World channel also produces such original
series as America ReFramed (independent films by, about and for communities of difference) and The Aspen Institute Presents, the first-ever broadcast of
the Aspen Institute’s Ideas Festival.

Health and Survival
The opportunities to improve the health
and lifespan of people around the globe
have never been greater. Yet millions of
people, mostly children, still die each year
from treatable and preventable diseases.
The vast majority of these deaths occur in
the developing world. But with funding
increases, new vaccines and greater access
to health, the picture is changing. This four-part series travels to villages in
the Philippines, Uganda, Niger and Bangladesh, where people suffer from
diseases and conditions the rest of the world has long since conquered. From
pregnancy to birth, through the formative years of a child’s development to
adulthood, we see the pain of loss and witness the triumph of hope.

Capturing Life
This month, the World channel features
three programs from the photographer’s point of view: behind the stage,
next to the President, and front and
center in wars and disasters. Rock
Prophecies views rock ’n’ roll through
the eyes of prolific photographer
Robert M. Knight. His celebrity subjects—Jeff Beck, Slash, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, ZZ Top, Robert Cray, Carlos
Santana, and Def Leppard among them—share their thoughts about the
photographer in a series of exclusive interviews. The President’s Photographer:
50 Years Inside the Oval Office reveals the worlds of veteran presidential photographers who have captured upheaval, tragedy and joy of five presidents:
Pete Souza (President Barack Obama), David Hume Kennerly (Gerald Ford);
David Valdez (George H.W. Bush); Bob McNeely (Bill Clinton); and Eric Draper
(George W. Bush). And in Deadline Every Second, follow 12 top photojournalists
on assignment in eight countries as they cover war, political clashes, financial
markets, natural disasters, sports and human-interest stories.

Justice for Albinos
Ukerewe Island, three hours from mainland
Tanzania, is home to a large community of
people who live with albinism. While many
albinos here are killed at birth or rejected
by their families, those who survive risk
being murdered for their body parts because
of a superstitious belief that they possess
medicinal properties. In the Shadow of the
Sun tells the story of two members of this
community: Vedastus, a teenage boy who struggles to find his own place in
the world, and Josephat, a strong-willed advocate for people with albinism.

March on Washington
Revisit one of the most compelling
events in US history with three programs that turn an eye on civil rights
and those involved in the revolution
for change. The Powerbroker follows
Whitney M. Young, Jr. (shown
center in photo) on his journey from
segregated Kentucky to head of the
National Urban League. Building the Dream recounts the journey of an idea
for a national monument honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. to ensure that
King’s dream remains alive for future generations. And The March revisits the
1963 March on Washington, a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement
(see page 18).

89.7 WGBH Boston Public Radio
Reporting on the Dream
This month on WGBH 2, the documentary The March (see page 18) features
remembrances of key players involved in 1963’s March on Washington,
including civil rights activists Julian Bond and Andrew Young, and testimonials from Oprah Winfrey, Harry Belafonte and others.
89.7 WGBH Boston Public Radio will bring
listeners local perspectives of this historic gathering. “The March helped transform this country,”
says Phil Redo, general manager for WGBH Radio.
“We’re going to put it into context by looking at
what it meant and still means, and by explaining
its enduring affect on our region and country.”
Leading up to the 50th anniversary on August 28, listen for commentary
from award-winning journalist Callie Crossley, host of Under the Radar on
89.7 and a regular panelist on WGBH TV’s Beat the Press and Basic Black, who
will share her thoughts on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream”
speech. On Aug. 28, 89.7 will dedicate a day of coverage to the March, with
reports from Phillip Martin on Morning Edition and All Things Considered and
midday Boston Public Radio hosts Jim Braude and Margery Eagan leading a
local conversation about the legacy of the March and King’s speech.
Then at 2pm, history will come alive when 89.7 dips into WGBH’s
archives to present excerpts from WGBH Radio’s 15 hours of on-the-scene
coverage from 1963.
“As a news organization, we’re so fortunate to have access to WGBH’s
archives,” Redo says. “The material we uncover rounds out our reporting and
adds another dimension to the stories we tell, deepening listeners’ understanding of significant moments from our past and present.”

Diary of A Bad Year:
A War Correspondent’s Dilemma
NPR’s Kelly McEvers presents an unprecedented
and intimate portrait of the sacrifices reporters and
their families make to tell untold stories—and the
sometimes dangerous allure of the job. The program includes interviews with Anna Blundy, the
daughter of a journalist killed in El Salvador;
renowned war correspondent Paul Wood of the
BBC; longtime conflict writer Jon Lee Anderson
of The New Yorker; famed correspondent Christiane Amanpour of CNN;
and Sebastian Junger, who with the late Tim Hetherington made the
award-winning film, Restrepo, about the war in Afghanistan. Produced with Atlantic Public Media’s Jay Allison.

Symphony of Brotherhood
By Benjamin K. Roe
Managing Director of Classical Services
With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain
of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able
to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a
beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we
will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle
together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom
together, knowing that we will be free one day.
~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
“I Have a Dream,” Aug. 28, 1963
Fifty years ago, as a member of the fledgling Educational Radio Network (a
forerunner of today’s NPR), WGBH Radio was one of just a handful of stations
to cover the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It was an unprecedented gathering of demonstrators, an event that concluded with the epic “I
Have a Dream” speech, delivered on the National Mall by Dr. King.
Fifty years later, and closer to home, our microphones will be back out
in force in a major public gathering, this time to bring you a musical tribute
to the inspiration and ideals that lie at the heart of Dr. King’s dream. Join us
Wednesday, August 28, at 7pm for a live broadcast of the Boston Landmark
Orchestra’s free concert at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade
marking this milestone in history. Christopher Wilkins will lead the Boston
Landmarks Orchestra, One-City Choir, the New England Spiritual Ensemble,
and special guests in a concert of stirring words and inspirational music by
Aaron Copland, Duke Ellington, Michael Tippett and Lee Hoiby. The night also
will feature the broadcast premiere of Cry, the Beloved Country, Kurt Weill’s
moving musical adaptation of Alan Paton’s groundbreaking novel about life
in South Africa under apartheid. All in tribute to the man who once declared,
“We must see that peace represents a sweeter music, a cosmic melody that is
far superior to the discords of war.”

A Tanglewood
Day Like No Other
It’s a day like no other at Tanglewood,
filled with fanfare, family activities,
food…and lots and lots of music:
symphonic, chamber, piano and vocal
performances by literally hundreds of
musicians, from the teenagers at the
Boston University Tanglewood
Institute and the budding professionals of the Tanglewood Music Center
Orchestra to the seasoned veterans of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It’s
Tanglewood on Parade, one of the festival’s most beloved traditions, capped
off by an evening concert and fireworks that features all of Tanglewood’s
orchestras performing in a single extended concert!
This year, Tanglewood on Parade also will be a celebration on the air, as
99.5 WCRB will be on the Tanglewood grounds throughout the day, starting with morning host Laura Carlo, continuing with Alan McLellan, and
onto Cathy Fuller’s afternoon drive-time program. The entire day will be
filled with features, conversations, and, of course, music, in an effort to
convey the community open house feel that makes Tanglewood on Parade
such a unique event on the summertime calendar.
And in the evening, Ron Della Chiesa will be back in the broadcast
booth at the Koussevitzky Music Shed to bring you every note as conductors Stéphane Denève, Keith Lockhart, Charles Dutoit and John Williams
together lead the Boston Symphony, the Boston Pops, and the Tanglewood
Music Center Orchestra in the annual Tanglewood on Parade gala concert.
We can’t tell you how it will begin—the program is always full of unexpected surprises—but we can promise how it will end: with Tchaikovsky’s
1812 Overture and an explosion of fireworks over the Berkshires. Joins us all
day on Tuesday, August 6, for Tanglewood on Parade—a great Tanglewood
tradition that you can now take with you!

The Moth Comes to Martha’s Vineyard
By Mindy Todd, WCAI’s Host and Managing Director for Editorial
Last summer, at a live event presented by The Moth Radio Hour, mystery writer
and native Martha’s Vineyarder Cynthia Riggs amazed the audience gathered
in the Vineyard’s Union Chapel. Cynthia, 81, shared the romantic story of how
she reconnected with a man she worked with more than a half century ago.
We’re grateful that we’ll be hearing more great stories like Cynthia’s this
summer when the Peabody Award-winning program returns for Fish Out of
Water: The Moth on Martha’s Vineyard, Saturday, August 3, at the Tabernacle
in Oak Bluffs. (Go to themoth.org for ticket information.)
The Moth is dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling, and has two
primary goals: to present the finest storytellers among established and
emerging writers, performers and artists; and to encourage storytelling
among populations whose stories often go unheard.
“The Moth’s inaugural show on the Vineyard (last year) was so warmly
received that we couldn’t wait to return,” says Sarah Haberman, The Moth’s
executive director. “It’s a privilege to be invited back to such a dynamic and
vibrant community and we hope to make it an annual tradition.”
The New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik will host the Vineyard event, and
the evening’s roster of storytellers includes writer and performer Jenny Allen;

story on themoth.org.
“We’re excited to have The Moth
at the Tabernacle,” says Jay Allison, founder of WCAI and executive director
of Atlantic Public Media, producer of The Moth. “It’ll be a privilege to hear the
stories on an August evening in that beautiful setting, and then share them
with the rest of the country on the radio show.”
If you can’t make the event, listen to The Moth Saturdays at 1pm on WCAI
to hear the recorded stories. And if you're curious about how Cynthia’s story
unfolded, go to themoth.org (just type her name in the site’s search bar),
or find it in our archives on The Point at capeandislands.org. Cynthia, a
13th-generation Vineyarder, joined me on the show to talk about her life and
tell the tale of how love can blossom at any age.
