The President’s Message
The Queensland Dog World
President’s message for July 2015
On behalf of the Dogs Queensland Board of Directors, I would like to thank all those Members
who entered the 2015 EKKA. I would also like to thank the RNA for listening to our Members’
concerns being raised by our Members in regards to the competition shift from the Plaza to
Animal Boulevard.
The reason the canine competition has been moved is due to the ongoing Brisbane Showgrounds
Regeneration Project. The new location does provide greatly improved drop off and pick up
points. Exhibitors can drive into Gate 2a from St Pauls Terrace, drop off or pick up, and then exit
back onto St Pauls Terrace.
The RNA also agreed to waive the Vehicle Access Permits, this is to ensure exhibitors can drop off
and pick up their animals between 6am and 9pm each day of show at Gate 2a. The RNA made
this change to ensure exhibitors are able to drop off and pick up at their convenience. The RNA
have also announced that the Fortitude Valley School will be available for Parking, all details
are available in the Board Notes in this issue of the Dog World. Despite of all the uncertainty
surrounding the Dog Section location and Parking, the number of entries remain comparable
to the 2014 level at 2,686, well done to you all.
If you have not entered, or even if you have, why not volunteer to work at the Dogs Queensland
Stand, details are in Board Notes.
Online Services
Recently the Office has finalised the provision of a ‘Members Only’ Section through ‘ANKC Online
Services’. Within the section, Members have access to Membership Renewals, Pedigree Look Up
and now the latest Dog World Magazine. It is hoped that online Litter Registrations, which is
undergoing testing at the moment, will be offered shortly to Members which I am sure will be a
welcome addition to this section. All details are available on the Dog Queensland Website and
Board Notes about how to register for online services.
Camping at Durack
As most Members will be aware, Dogs Queensland is now officially offering to all members
Tent Camping at the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds at Durack. All bookings are to be made
through the ‘Show Manager’ website, showmanager.com.au and we thank them greatly for their
assistance in developing this booking system. Bookings are available to be taken for all events
held at Durack. Dogs Queensland has been granted a limited approval from the Brisbane City
Council (BCC) to allow camping at the Showgrounds.
Further details of the BCC-issued camping approval and the requirements that must be complied
with by members who choose to camp at the Showgrounds can be found in the Dogs Queensland
Tent Camping Policy and Guidelines (Camping Policy).
2 - July 2015
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
The President’s Message
The Queensland Dog World
I may sound like a broken record but Campers must clearly understand the following at all times:
1. The BCC camping approval granted to Dogs Queensland only allows for a maximum of 20
designated camping sites at the Showgrounds. We are unable to accommodate any additional
camping sites at the Showgrounds and we therefore advise members wishing to camp to
book early to secure your spot.
2. Members wishing to camp at the Showgrounds must do so within the designated camping
area advised by Dogs Queensland and as set out in the Camping Policy.
3. Dogs Queensland is currently only able to offer tent camping to its members. Under the
terms of the BCC camping approval, we are unable by law to allow any vehicle camping
(such as Caravans, Camper Vans, Winnebagos etc.) at the Showgrounds. We apologise for
any inconvenience that this may cause. Dogs Queensland will make a further statement after
the July Board Meeting in regards to the potential next stage and further development of
the camping area.
4. Members who choose to tent camp outside of the designated area, or to camp in a vehicle
will do so at their own risk and Dogs Queensland will not be liable for any loss suffered by
those members. Additionally, as this will be in breach of the BCC camping approval granted
to Dogs Queensland, members who do so may put Dogs Queensland at risk of losing its
current BCC approval and jeopardise future applications for BCC camping approvals
The other points I would like to raise with Members are the costs in regards to Camping at
Durack. Since the instigation of Tent Camping, approval Fees and Consultation Fees, which
are an absolute necessity, have come to $12,095, the Toilet Block Extension, again which was a
necessity, was $106,487.
I believe that for the Board to charge a mere $20 plus GST per night to use these facilities is
excellent value and comparable to any Showground Camping area in Australia. Based on initial
estimates, the proposed site plan as outlined in the March Dog World for the next stage to allow
RVs and Caravans at Durack would cost around $101,157 including BCC Application Fees, Plumbing
and Electrical Works and Capital Costs.
A report on this will be made at the upcoming PST Meeting before proceeding to wider Member
Consultation.
Hope to see you all at the EKKA!

The Trade Practices Act came into force on 1st October 1974. Certain provisions of the act relating to
consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers
of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted
for publication comply with the act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the
act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are advised to seek legal advice before
submitting advertising material.

Vehicle Parking Policy – Durack
All Members are asked to take note of the following policy that is
effective immediately;
In general, the parking of vehicles on the Dogs Queensland Dog
Sports Grounds at Durack is unregulated with members and visitors
being able to park their cars in most areas. However, there are
specific areas on the grounds that must have restrictions because
those areas are utilised for officials or specific activities.
For example, the following areas are fully restricted to only those
people that have approval to park in these areas:
•
•
•
•
Disabled Parking Zone – nobody without a recognised
Government issued disabled parking permit being displayed
is permitted to park their vehicle in this area,
Loading Zone – nobody who is not in the process of the
immediate loading or unloading of passengers or event related
items for a period of 10 minutes or less is permitted to park
their vehicle in that area,
Vendors Area – only Dogs Queensland approved, contracted
vendors are permitted to park their vehicle in this area. There
will be no parking of vehicles on any vendor’s site if that site
is not in use by a vendor on any day when events are being
held, and
Designated Camping Area – only approved members who have
booked and paid for a tent camping site are permitted to park
one vehicle in this area.
Unapproved Parking Procedure
If any vehicle is parked in any of the four areas stated above, the
following process will be followed:
1. A Grounds Committee appointed inspector will identify and
record the exact offence from the four items above, the vehicle’s

5.
make, model, colour, registration number and possible owner’s
name and/or their exhibitor number on the day.
An announcement will be made over the grounds’ loudspeaker
with the details as stated in point 1 above and that the vehicle’s
owner has 30 minutes from that point to move the vehicle or
further action will ensue.
If the 30 minutes noted in point 2 above has expired without
the vehicle being moved, the details collected will be
transposed onto the Vehicle Illegally Parked form, with the
original being placed on the vehicle and a copy to be sent into
the office on the next business day.
The office will write a letter to the vehicle’s owner stating that
a note has been taken of the details surrounding the parking
offence and any future repeat offence will result in the invoicing
of a $20.00 fine which may also result in the Dogs Queensland
disciplinary process being invoked for a rules breach if this fine
is not paid by the due date.
The fine will be monitored by the office and non-payments will
be referred to a Breaches Panel for determination in relation
to future suspension from showing at Durack. Note that
administration fees will apply and interest

Judges News
The Part B examinations were held recently. Welcome to our new
trainees who completed their entrance exam.
Congratulations to all successful candidates.
Now to focus on the ‘Hands-On’ exams in August! From time to
time we have to deal with complaints on a variety of topics.
Recently however, there has been an increase in the number of
complaints about alleged unsportsmanlike behaviour by judges,
who are exhibiting, toward officiating judges and other exhibitors.
Judges are reminded that there is a code of ethics for judges.
This applies irrespective of whether they are judges or exhibitors.
I would ask that all judges refer to the Presidents Message in the
June Dog World. In particular the section – “Rule 224”.
Judges may also be called upon to show cause why they should
retain their judges licence.
Trainees, don’t forget the great library resource we have at Durack,
there is heaps of valuable information available.

This month’s
member review is:
‘The Saga of the Dogue de Bordeaux’
Written by Raymond Triquet
From the antique to the modern Dogue
Reviewed by Helen Acworth
Librarian
Each month when preparing the book review, I come across a fascinating
breed. I see these breeds at shows but get a completely different insight
into their origins etc when reading up on them in some of the great books
we have in the Library.
The Dogue de Bordeaux is no exception. This rather large book (270 pages A4
size) is quite magnificient - some of the colour photohgraphs are just brilliant.
The ‘Foreword’ of this book was written by Harry Baxter who describes the
author as ‘Monsieur Standard’ because of his influence in the production of
the model for all international breed standards - ‘The Saga’ begins with the
1995 standard.
Whilst a lot of info in the book is technical, it gives a great insight into
understanding the character and behaviour of the Dogue as fundamental
to family-dog owners and breeders and judges.

The Dogue de
Bordeaux

Origin
The first canine exhibition was held in Paris and the breed was
given the name of the capital of their region of origin. To this day
the breed is still referred to as the ‘Dogue de Bordeaux’.
There is no other known reference to the ‘Dogue de Bordeaux’
until the year 1883 when they were again exhibited. There was
a diverse difference in the breed at the time, which created
much controversy. Some had big heads, small heads, some with
underbite (at times up to one inch), others with a level scissor
bite.
Also the mask colour was the subject of many debates and
discussions; red mask, black mask, or no mask. There were also
three different types of Dogue adding to the controversy – the
Toulouse, the Parisian and the Bordeaux. Our modern Dogue
de Bordeaux is a mixture of these different types, but primarily
the Bordeaux type. The first standard was written by Jean-Pierre
Megnin in 1896.
Many theories exist about the origin of the Dogue de Bordeaux
(DDB). The most popular credits its birthplace as Aquitaine
some time between the 12th and 15th centuries, possibly
being derived from the ancient Alants.
World War II had a devastating impact on the breed as they were
ordered shot on site due to their devotion to their families and
guarding ability.
It was 1863 when we see the first reference to the Dogue that is
the basis of our modern Dogue.
This devastated the breed with as few as three breeding pairs
remaining.

Feature Breed
The Queensland Dog World
The breed was re-established during the 1950s and 1960s.
The breed was recognised by the Australian National Kennel
Council in 1995 with fifteen imported Dogues initially reregistered.
Description
When looking at the Dogue de Bordeaux, its original function
was varied. The breed has been used for bull and bear baiting, for
fighting, for guarding and as a draught animal. Given the range
of uses, it is obvious that the breed must be athletic but with a
muscular body that can produce considerable strength. The first
few sentences of the Breed Standard for the Dogue de Bordeaux
actually capture very well the form and function of the DDB.
“The Dogue de Bordeaux is a very powerful dog, with a very
muscular body yet retaining a harmonious general outline. He
is built rather close to the ground... stocky, athletic, imposing, he
has a very dissuasive aspect.”
The Dogue has a broad trapezoid head with a repandous (curved)
undershot jaw and a strong chin mark. The muzzle is square when
viewed from above and hardly decreases in width. The nose is
slightly set back. The body is thickset and the chest is deep and
well let down. Seen from the front, the forequarters present as
broader than the hindquarters, but this difference should not be
exaggerated.
They are extremely smart and easily trained, but are quickly
bored with repetition. Males will generally not tolerate other
male dogs.
Exercise
Moderate exercise is recommended. As they do not like the heat,
they tend to rest during the heat of the day and play in the cool
of the early morning and evening.
Life Expectancy
Approximately eight to ten years.
Grooming
They are a wash and wear dog, so very little is needed, although
wrinkles and ears must be kept clean. The breed is an average
shedder.
Source credits: ‘a Dogue as powerful as he is handsome’
(Jean de la Fountaine – Book 1. Fable V. The Wolf and the Dog. 1668)
The shoulders are well laid back in order to achieve balance with
the well angulated rear. The topline is as straight as possible in
a concave-lined dog, but never perfectly straight or horizontal.
The croup is moderately sloping. The coat is fine, soft to touch and
any shade of fawn (from Isabella to mahogany). Lighter fawn hair
should be visible on the ‘saddle marks’ on the shoulders, sides of
the neck and underbelly. There are three mask colours – black,
brown (often referred to as red) and no mask. Movement is active,
supple, free, far-reaching, well co-ordinated in line with the body
with a mobile shoulder and good drive from the hindquarters.
The Dogue de Bordeaux is a medium size mastiff, not a massive
mastiff. They are powerful, muscular, stocky and athletic whilst
retaining a harmonious general outline.
Temperament
Extremely loyal and patient, they are a devoted family pet and
top-rate guard dog. Belying their dissuasive appearance, they
are gentle with children, although, as with any powerful dog,
supervision is recommended. Couch potatoes and bed bunnies
are common adjectives used to describe them, but they can be
stubborn and dominant.

THE POODLE RETRIEVER
WRITTEN BY RICH LOUTER OF LOUTER CREEK RETRIEVERS AND GUN DOGS
Submitted by Merryl Yet Foy (Loana Standard Poodles), special thanks to Rich and Angie Louter
It’s already a well known fact that Poodles are hypoallergenic
and a non shedding dog, but did you also know that they make
fine hunting companions as well? Poodles have been used in
the field since the 1400s for finding and retrieving downed
game. In fact it is one of the earliest known breed of hunting
dogs. There are several sketches and drawings of poodles
hunting during that era.
They are more than capable of handling a crippled rooster
pheasant much to the amazement of many hunters. Due to their
webbed feet many poodles are strong swimmers and have a
natural retrieve instinct that make them very useful for retrieving
waterfowl. It’s not every day you see a Poodle Retriever bringing
back a wood duck in the flooded rice fields of Mississippi and
Louisiana, USA.
They possess a keen sense of smell, are extremely intelligent
making them very useful for upland bird hunting like quail, chukar,
grouse, pheasant, etc. They are a close working flushing dog and
have been described as working a field methodically.
There’s a common misconception that the traditional continental
‘show’ clip that is seen in most show rings today was used to keep
the dog’s vital organs warm when hunting in cold weather.

We have found this to be inaccurate as a Poodle’s coat is more
like a mop that soaks up water unlike other breeds like the
Labrador Retriever. That being said, it’s much easier for the dog
to manoeuvre and swim in a much shorter clip. They dry much
faster and will stay generally warmer without all that hair.
During hunting season we keep all of our retrievers in a very short
‘field’ clip. This is done at least once a month by shaving them with
a number four blade. We find keeping them short helps from briars
and cockleburs attaching to their coat. When duck hunting in the
cold winter month’s we take precautionary measures by putting
neoprene vests on them for added warmth.
The training of Poodles is done similar to training other sporting
dog breeds but do not do well with a heavy handed trainer. The
training program for Poodles should include more ‘teaching’ than
other methods commonly used for training hunting dogs. They
tend to want to please you and they want to do things right so
that’s why it’s very important to teach in small increments and put
all the puzzle pieces together.
A big upside to this breed is that Poodles have wonderful
temperaments, they are great family dogs, they love to be a part
of what the family is doing, whether it’s going on a hike in the
woods or taking a leisurely boat ride, to swimming on the shore.
Of course we find that their favourite love is the retrieving game,
from retrieving their favorite ball to bumpers in the yard to live
birds in the field.
Here at Louter Creek Retrievers & Gundogs, our training/breeding
program is built around our top Poodle Retriever, UH HRCH MHR
UGA Southern Standards Red Creole MH WCX aka ‘Cooper’ who
continues to produce ‘natural bird dogs’ for hunters and hunt test
enthusiasts. Since professional training is a big part of our program,
we travel to many hunt tests campaigning retrievers in the Eastern
part of the USA spring and fall.
Through a careful and thoughtful breeding program we have
developed a line of Poodles that have all the attributes of fine
hunting companions, great temperaments, strong prey drive,
healthy genetics, and very bitable.
This is why we start puppies at a young age and develop their
strong prey drive as well as work ethic.

A Short History
of the Brittany
Also known as the
Epagneul Breton in France
Dogs Queensland Exclusive
Supplied by Karen and Ian Ward
The Brittany
Epagneul is a french word for dogs that point or set their
game, while Breton is from Brittany, the place which the
breed derives its name.
The breed started life in an area of France called Callac. In the
Village of Callac itself, there stands a statue of a French Cob horse,
on which the Brittany is reputed to be based.
In the 1800s it was usual for the landed gentry in England to
shoot partridge and snipe in France, and of course they took with
them their best gundogs, mostly Setters (English and Gordon)
and Pointers.
These were often left with the French landowners from one
season to the next, and resulted in a number of matings between
these dogs and a very highspirited spaniel from the area.
From these matings the Brittany was born.
22 - July 2015
By 1904, the Brittany had evolved. Due to a variety of colours
in the Pointers and Setters the Brittany also appeared in many
colours.
These farmers had produced a multi-purpose Gundog
including:
• Keen and strong-bodied spaniel to enter thickets and
brambles
• Fast wide-ranging hunter for open grassland and stubble,
requiring pointing
• Ability to hold the game until the shooter was within range
• An all-rounder retriever for land and water small and
inexpensive to feed (farmers were not rich) possessing
the intelligence and temperament to be the farmhouse
watchdog and family pet
• Along the way a tailless dog was born, and even today many
Brittany’s are born tailless or bob tailed
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Feature Breed
The Queensland Dog World
In 1944 the American Brittany Club, feeling that the breed was
a true pointing dog and thus should not be classed as a spaniel
which are flushing dogs, they asked for the name to be changed
to Brittany request was denied.
However, in following years the breed proved to be an
outstanding pointing dog, an intense hunter of upland game
and one with the greatest record of producing dual champions
in the world.
It was also evident that the breed ranged in greater patterns than
spaniels so the request was reconsidered and changed in 1982
(however in FCI countries and France the breed is still known as
Brittany Spaniel).
The first four imports arrived in Australia late 1974.
These imports soon proved their working ability, where most
offspring went to field homes in hope to one day also enter the
show ring.
General Appearance
Smallest of the pointing breeds, the dog is compact and well knit
without undue heaviness while staying sufficiently elegant. The
dog is vigorous, the look is bright and the expression intelligent.
The general aspect is cobby, full or energy.
Grooming
Grooming a Brittany starts with the neck clipping through to the
breast bone and blending the neck.
Shaving approximately a U-shaped pattern between the ridges
where the hair changes direction on either side of the dog’s neck
(and upside down V from just above the breast bone).
Ears are thinner on the lower part.
Hindquarters are clipped under the tail to accentuate the square
cobby dog also cleaning the underside of the tail.
Also trimming the hocks and feet.
A Brittany’s top coat should not be clipped. Never over groom a
Brittany, after all, they are a wash and wear dog.

Brittanys are small and inexpensive to feed although they are
very good eaters. The Brittany is a compact, medium sized dog
with short to medium hair.
Fondly referred to as ‘the human orientated breed’, they adore
people and are ready, willing and able to join in on any family
activity including swimming, jogging, sailing and bike riding.
The Brittany is a very adaptable breed, at home both indoors
and out. Agile, energetic and great stamina with a will to please.
Brittanys are obedient and make a great family pet.
Temperament
The Brittany
Brittanys are a happy alert dog, neither shy nor mean. They are
energetic, fun loving and enjoy the company of people of any age.
Brittanys are loyal, affectionate and eager to please their master
as well as being good watchdogs.
Supplied by Karen and Ian Ward
They make fantastic pets for children especially four to five years
and up, though smaller children may get their faces washed and
get pushed over by an over exuberant puppy wanting to play. If
supervised the puppy soon learns not to knock his small master
over and baby and puppy grow up together and become the
best of friends.
History
Characteristics
The Brittany is a French breed originating in Northern France
as early as 1850. By 1904 the Brittany had evolved into a
distinct breed. The first dogs were first imported into Australia
in 1974 and 1975.
The Brittany is a medium sized dog growing to approximately 51cm
(18 - 20 inches) at the shoulder and weighing between 13 -18 kgs.
They fit nicely into the family car and don’t take up much room.
Dogs Queensland Exclusive
The Brittany is classified as a Utility Gundog which means that they
hunt, point, flush and retrieve their game. The Brittany is used in
Australia for hunting Stubble Quail, Duck, Rabbit, Hare and to a
lesser degree foxes, pigs and deer.
Training
The Brittany is a tough, rugged little dog with a great deal of
courage and spirit. They are very active, fast and skilful when
hunting and are excellent retrievers on both land and water. The
Brittany is an easy dog to train and excels at obedience and agility.
They can become bored with repetitious training so it is essential
to put variety into their routines.
They are a leggy dog in appearance with great stamina, energy
and ruggedness without clumsiness. This gives the Brittany the
ability to cover large amounts of ground. Coupled with the desire
for hunting and refusal to quit this makes the breed versatile for
show or fieldwork.
They come in a variety of colours – orange/white, liver/white,
black/white, black Tri-colour, liver Tri-colour and Roan of all these
colours.
Care and Feeding
Brittanys are fondly referred to as the Wash ‘n’ Wear dog. The coat
is of a short to medium length with some fringing on the back of
their legs. The coat is designed not to absorb or hold water, mud
or dirt. After bathing a quick rub with a towel and a shake and
they are almost dry.
A quick brush and you’re done.

Zone 2 Showcase
The Queensland Dog World
Dog World update, July 2015
The weather is turning cooler as we hit the middle of winter but
that hasn’t slowed down the activities and the participation
in events in Zone 2.
Many of our regional members are making preparations to attend
the EKKA in August and we wish all of our regional members safe
travels and many successes at this event.
Special Feature
Part of preparing for events is to schedule them in the hope that
a good entry will be achieved and for the most part, our clubs
succeed in doing this.
Over the past years however, with entry numbers declining at
many shows, clubs need to be even more vigilant about their
scheduling to ensure that members participate.
One possible barrier that I have noticed is that quite often there
is a clash on weekends between clubs in the north and south of
Zone 2 which effectively requires members in the middle to make
a choice and therefore splits the potential entry of the clubs.
I don’t often get a lot of submissions for the column, so I was really
excited when Kim Dawson of the Rockhampton Dog Obedience
Club sent me an article and some photos asking if it was the type
of thing to put in the magazine. Of course it is! Thanks heaps for
this guys.
It is definitely up to the clubs to decide when their shows are held
but it may be an opportune time to analyse the list of show dates
and to be flexible to avoid potential clashes that may affect the
overall entry for shows.
Please check out the feature from the Rockhampton Dog
Obedience Club on the following pages.
Quite often members in the centre of the zone would be willing to
travel and support both clubs if the shows were held on different
weekends but they have to make a choice and a club loses out on
entries where there is a clash.
What’s on in Zone 2 in July?

Rules In Action
Sometimes at dog shows, members can become a little perplexed
and perhaps irritated by the decisions that judges make and
speculation of why the decision was made.
In itself, this is not necessarily a bad thing and exhibitors are able
to approach a judge after they have completed judging to discuss
what has happened. This should be considered as an opportunity
to gain an insight and perhaps learn something.
However, we also need to ensure that we keep our emotions in
check.
Safe travels and good luck to our Zone 2 members travelling within
and outside of the Zone during July.
Event Scheduling
The Zone 2 clubs work very hard to put on great events for our
members to attend and participate in.
28 - July 2015
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Zone 2 Showcase
The Queensland Dog World
There is no rule stating that we have to like or agree with the
decision that a judge has made, but we do need to accept it – that
is incumbent upon us as members.
We need to be mindful, no matter how aggrieved we feel, that it
is not appropriate for us to make loud or audible remarks about
our thoughts on the matter. Rule 224 states:
“Any person causing annoyance by loud comments on the decision
of the Judges or being guilty of unsportsmanlike action while in the
precincts of an exhibition shall be guilty of an offence against these
Rules and may, after being cautioned by a member of the Show
Committee or other official of the show, be ordered to leave the Show.
If such person fails to comply with such order he shall be guilty of a
further offence against these Rules.”
Rest assured, no Show Manager or official at an event wants to
have to deal with something like this, so they would rather it not
happen. The moral here is that we don’t have to be happy about
what happens but we need to save our comments for a more
private forum in which we can vent.
Keeping it Clean
To achieve this and spread the load, we need more members to give
up a small part of their day to assist with stewarding and writing.
The job is not difficult and can be quite enjoyable – there are
always experienced workers around who can help you to learn
what to do and Dogs Queensland also offers formalised training,
so there is nothing to be afraid of.
It is really important that our members all get involved in the
hobby and supporting it. If we run out of workers which we are
really quite close to doing in regional areas, we won’t have a hobby
to enjoy, so please be proactive and get involved.
Submissions
Submissions are always welcome for the column. If you have a
news item, an idea for a story, photos, or want to report a special
or significant achievement, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Any information can be emailed to me at craig.pettett1@bigpond.com
Until next time.
Members are able to enjoy some great grounds and facilities for our
events and of course we all want to be able to continue to enjoy them.
This enjoyment is in jeopardy though due to the inconsiderate and
irresponsible actions of a minority of members who seem to think
they are above the rules of common decency and responsibility
when it comes to cleaning up after their dogs.
At a recent show I was appalled to see an exhibitor toileting their
dog, which obviously had some sort of a stomach upset, and walk
away leaving the result behind for someone else to clean up.
This is disgusting and disrespectful to the host club and other
members, and can impact on the willingness of the owners or
custodians of grounds to allow us to use them for our events.
So please, clean up after your dogs. If you find this act of common
courtesy and responsibility particularly difficult then perhaps you
need to consider whether dog hobbies are for you.
Helpers needed
At our shows recently, I’ve noticed that the same people seem to
be doing all the work when it comes to stewarding and writing.
The clubs who these people volunteer for are extremely grateful
for the support they provide but it would be very nice for them to
be able to have a show here or there where they can just sit and
relax instead of having to work all the time.

Sandra and Grand Champion Hamish
The last Track and Search (T&S) Trial held by Rockhampton
Dog Obedience Club (RDOC) in 2014 was a highly successful
one, netting veteran tracking competitors Sandra Pitcher
and Annette Kirkwood the highest qualifications in a very
challenging discipline.
Sandra Pitcher and her Labrador Retriever Hamish (DUAL CH(T)
TS GRAND CH LOUISAVIEW DRIVIN U HOME CCD CDX RA) became
Queensland’s first team to qualify for their Grand Champion Track
and Search (TSD10) Title.
At the same Trial, Sandra and her Labrador Retriever Clancy (TS CH
DUAL CH(T) BLACKBOY BRANDY SCHNAPPS CDX RA) qualified for
their TSD9, the penultimate qualification in the Track and Search
discipline.
Annette Kirkwood and her Welsh Springer Dylan (TS CH DUAL
CH(T) RICOCHEZ BEDWYR RHODRI CDX RA ADX JDX GD SDX SPDX)
achieved their T&S Championship (TSD8), previously the highest
possible achievement in Track and Search.
At the higher levels, Track and Search tests are conducted urban
environments including heavily trafficked recreational, commercial
and industrial areas.
30 - July 2015
This requires the dogs to track across various hard surfaces such
as bitumen, concrete and gravel, in addition to coping with the
distractions presented by other people, animals and traffic.
To attain his Grand Champion title, Hamish was required to
successfully track the path of a person who had walked around
a busy shopping centre undercover parking lot over three hours
previously. Adding to the difficulty, this was done at night and
included a section where the person was picked up by a car and
let out 200m around a corner.
Hamish also successfully ignored the distraction provided by the
Police, who hailed the Judge and Steward to ask what such a
suspicious-looking group were doing wandering around a parking
lot at night. Clancy’s track was performed during the day but
included all the same challenges, excepting the presence of the
Police.
Track and Search Champion Dylan successfully followed a four
hour old path for a kilometre through a commercial complex
parking lot at night.
He was also required to pause in his tracking when directed by
the Judge and resume after a two minute break.

Champion Dylan during a night time track
Not content to rest on their laurels, Sandra and Annette also
compete in Obedience, Rally Obedience and Agility. Hamish was
awarded the 2014 ‘Vikings Open Dog of the Year’ for Queensland,
where the six highest qualifying scores for Open Obedience
competitions throughout the year are used to identify the dog
with the highest point score.
Sandra and Clancy also compete in UD Obedience and Rally
Obedience, with both Hamish and Clancy gaining their RA Titles.
Annette and Dylan compete in UD Obedience and gained their
RA, ADX and JDX titles during 2014.
Annette also competes with her Irish Red and White Setter Regan
(DUAL CH(T) TINTOOKIE STYLE AND GRACE CCD CD RN TSD JD
SPD), achieving their Track and Search (TSD3), CCD, RN and JD
Titles.
In addition to their own training and competition commitments,
Annette and Sandra train a small but dedicated group of new
tracking enthusiasts based at RDOC.

President GRC Qld
Our recent Golden Retriever Club of Qld Fun Day event was
held on the Sunday 10th of May. This is the first event for
many years, in the past this event drew huge crowds and we
were a little nervous to see if it would still do so. However, it
proved beyond doubt that pet owners are the most happy and
engaged group of people.
We drew a crowd that would be the envy of any show held and
clocked up an amazing attendance estimated to be between 120
and 150 people all accompanied by their dogs.
There were many, many events for participants and it was such a
pleasure to be able to see such genuine involvement.
specialists held displays, a new member Amanda Milton donated
a lovely raffle prize as did KONG, we further had Obedience and
Dances with Dogs displays.
At the end of the day all of the club members who had catered
for the event, including BBQ etc chose to donate all the supplies
they had bought which meant we not only had a successful day
but it then became profitable as well, to the tune of over $600.
I can’t thank all the helpers enough, it was a really busy happy
and successful day, here’s cheers to the next one.
We were generously sponsored by Advance with showbags, VIP
Petfoods with sample bags and large bags donated as prizes,
KONG sent a rep for the day and Pawsitive Connection training
