Bringing Family & Community Together Through Recreation Since 1934!
Welcome to WA-WM Recreation & Community Services
Dear Members of the
West Allis-West Milwaukee Community,
Spring in Wisconsin is always an opportunity for new
growth. This includes growth in the traditional sense of
new vegetation and blooming trees as well as growth in
our lives.
We hope you take the opportunity to join one of the
many programs that our Recreation and Community
Services Department offers to expand and grow your life
this summer. These individual and family opportunities
include sport leagues, crafts, fitness, enrichment and other
wellness programs. We have a wide range of activities
from toddler to older active adults and many in between.
The summer months see numerous playgrounds and
programs for our school aged students.
We also organize the annual 4th of July
Parade and post-parade activities which is
a hit for the entire community.
Our Activity Guide has offerings for
everyone. Please log onto the WAWM
School District Recreation Department website at:
wawmrec.com or stop at the Recreation and Community
Service Department, located at 1205 S. 70th Street, to get
your copy of the Summer 2016 Activity Guide. Have a fun
and safe summer.

Tot Lot is like our supervised summer playground
with one exception: it is designed especially for kids
ages 5 and under. Each week is given a unique theme
(bugs, space, animal safari, etc.) that is explored
through stories, arts and crafts, projects, organized
games and special events. Throughout the summer,
Tot Lot kids are also given the opportunity to be
active outside with free play on the
equipment, participate in fun
activities such as walking in the
West Allis Independence Day
Parade on July 2nd, and making a
splash at the Fun Run & Pool Party
at the end of summer.
Children must be able to
provide self-care including using
the restroom. This program is free.
Tot Lot, however, is NOT intended
to be a childcare program. Each child must be signed
in and out by an adult, and emergency contact
information must be filled out on site. Kids can join
in the fun at any time during the hours open.
(Children, must be picked up by the ending time.)

Information for 2016 - 2017 School Year
The West Allis-West Milwaukee School District offers full and half-day four-year-old kindergarten at each of
its neighborhood schools. During the first week of school, students begin class in a way that supports a
successful transition to school (see below). Students will get to know their teacher, learn and practice
school/classroom procedures, and become familiar with their new school. Access the district website
www.wawm.k12.wi.us for enrollment information. If you have any questions about 4K enrollment, contact Mrs.
Meehan via email at MeehanT@wawm.k12.wi.us or telephone 414-604-3014. Note: A supply list will be posted
on the school website. Students should bring a change of clothes and a rest mat on their first day of school.

Don’t have a bike? No
worries, we will provide one to
use at camp! Don’t have a helmet?
No worries, we will provide one
for you to keep! How much does
it cost? Nothing, it is FREE!!!
Adventure Bike Camp is a
“wheel” exploration that uses
bicycling as a means of
transportation, personal
development and fun. We provide
participants the opportunity to
build confidence and self-esteem,
improve their cycling skills and
physical fitness, investigate and
learn the access they have to
different trails, engage in group
bike rides, and enjoy themselves
in a supportive camp setting.
Participants will participate in
daily bike rides throughout the
West Allis, West Milwaukee, and
Milwaukee area, learn cycling
skills, learn about bike riding
safety, and practice proper bicycle
maintenance. Start & end at

Move Better
Today we know from research
that movement is not an option. It
is as essential to good health as
food, water, and oxygen. It is a
must and crucial to living a long
healthy life. We are all aware that
we should exercise and have good
posture. But then, why don’t we?
The answer is that exercise takes
time from our already hectic
schedule and can be
uncomfortable and painful. This
lecture offers insight and
guidelines for making exercise, as
well as spinal health, a life-long
commitment.

Sauerkraut - Yum!
Fermentation is an historical way to preserve food, it allows food to
“sour” which allows the food to stay safe to eat for months when
refrigerated. Don’t be scared, fermentation isn’t a complicated process
and with Julie Toman as your guide, you can’t do wrong. In
class, you will sample several different fermented vegetables,
make sauerkraut and ferment a vegetable yourself. After this
class, the vegetables at the farmer’s market will
