What to do in
the Göteborg Region
when you have a
few months or years
to spend.
We are delighted to learn that you are interested in life on the west coast of Sweden,
where Göteborg, Sweden's second city, has always been the natural gateway to the
west. This is a city with international style, local creativity and a natural, relaxed charm,
able to combine big city excitement, shopping and cultural facilities with stunning scenery and coastline. In fact, one of Europe's finest island archipelagos is no more than a
tram ride away from the city centre.
On the following pages you will find an introduction to living conditions in the kingdom of Sweden and specifically, what it's like to live and work in the city of Göteborg
and its surrounding areas.

A great city with a small town feel.
Take a slice of London, mix it with a bit of Amsterdam and add a touch
of San Francisco and you will end up with something like Göteborg.
Except perhaps that this is a city on a slightly smaller scale. You can bike
through the city centre in less than 10 minutes, whilst a bus or tram
tour will do it in around 15. This is a place where ‘local’ means anything
within 10 minutes walk and yet the people are just as cosmopolitan as
in any big city in the world. And that’s the way it has been for as long as
we can remember, ever since the 1600s when Swedes and Germans
built our houses and market squares, the Dutch built our canals and the
British made us one of the most thriving merchant ports in Europe. At
that time, Göteborg was a typical port, with three official languages.
Nowadays of course, there are many more languages spoken here and
Göteborg has grown into a multicultural city.
There are 860,000 residents in the Göteborg Region (the entire
Western Sweden is reckoned to have 1.5 million) and we have lots of
good reasons to thrive here. For example, the cost of living here is much
lower than in many other large urban regions as can quickly be seen at
the supermarket checkout.
In the new area of Eriksberg,
there are spacious apartments
with a view of the harbour.
Looks like a place
you could call home?
The Göteborg Region has a lot to offer, especially
when it comes to places to live. Just think of it – you
can live by the sea, in the forest, or in the heart of a
bustling city. And there’s a lot of different types of
accommodation to choose from – spacious apartments, charming wooden houses and modern homes
with the clean simplicity of Scandinavian architecture.
The city’s location, with its beautiful natural harbour,
stunning coastline and rugged hills and forests, is one
of its biggest assets.
The majority of all Swedes own the house they live in.

Monday mornings are great
when you don’t have to face
them so early.
Living and working in Göteborg is of course different than
living in another European city in many ways. For example,
you don’t have to get up so early to get to work on time.
Göteborg is a small big city, and you can get just about anywhere within a few minutes. Within 20 kilometers are many
of the Göteborg Region’s biggest businesses. If you choose
to drive to work, you’ll quickly notice that the traffic queues
are much shorter than elsewhere in Europe. If you prefer
the bus, tram or train, there are lots to choose from as our
public transport system is very extensive and runs smoothly
to the benefit of city residents and commuters. Students in
Göteborg are even better off – colleges and the university
are in the city centre.

Cultural life is also rich and varied. We have an art museum renowned for its fine

sport. Or write your first poem.
The place for action and adventure, or a picture of tranquility.
Having the great outdoors on the doorstep gives those with active
leisure pursuits a lot to choose from. Naturally, many of us spend
our spare time on the water, where sailing, motor cruising,
powerboating, water-skiing, windsurfing and fishing are extremely
popular. In the summer, we have guests from all over the world
come to spend their boating holiday on our magnificent coastline.
If you prefer the greener pleasures of golf, there are four big
courses within Göteborg’s boundaries and many more in the
region. Riding is another favourite pastime for Swedes, and
Göteborg is particularly well served with a host of riding schools
and trails. The Scandinavian winters bring excellent skiing on the
hills just a few miles away.
Everyday life in Swedish society.
Life in modern day Sweden cannot of course be fully described in a brochure. But to give
you some idea, we can say that Sweden consistently ranks high in quality of life surveys.
This covers education, healthcare, career opportunities, the environment and many other
aspects of life. Our welfare state is precious to us and internationally renowned.

Growing up in the Göteborg Region.
Relocating to a new country and/or city raises a lot of issues even for a single person.
Moving with your family raises many more: what will it be like for my children in a place

will they be offered? How does daycare work? Choice of education is a particularly
important issue, so a short resumé of what Göteborg has to offer follows here.
