Dental Hygiene Bachelor Degree
Completion Program
(Open Enrollment)
The Bachelor of Science degree program in Dental Hygiene is designed
to meet the transfer and continuing education needs of Associate Degree
graduates in Dental Hygiene. This program will offer students a foundation
of knowledge that will prepare them for the emerging roles within the Dental
Hygiene profession. Emphasis is placed on broadening the career paths
for practicing hygienists. Foundation courses are in the areas of teaching,
research and public health.
Dental Hygiene Associate Degree
Program (Fall Semester Only)

Applications submitted to the program by January 15 receive equal consideration.
The Dental Hygiene program prepares students for licensure and entry into the
profession of Dental Hygiene, as well as certification in the administration of
local infiltration anesthesia/nitrous oxide analgesia. The Department of Dental
Hygiene is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Graduates
receive an Associate in Science degree and are eligible to sit for the National
Board Examination in Dental Hygiene, as well as State and Regional Practical
Board Examinations for dental hygienists. The program is two years in length
and consists of 80 credits. The curriculum provides a mix of general education,
allied and dental sciences as well as clinical courses.
High School Requirements:
n High School Diploma or GED
n Integrated Algebra and Geometry
n Laboratory Biology and Laboratory Chemistry
Transfer Requirements (in addition to the High School requirements):
n EGL 101 - Composition: Rhetoric
n BIO 166 - Anatomy and Physiology
n CHM 140 - Introduction to General Organic and Biochemistry
Please note:
n Completion of the minimum pre-requisite courses does not guarantee
admission. Applicants are ranked according to grades. The dental hygiene
program is highly selective and competitive. Students who are typically
admitted have a minimum grade of “B” in all of the pre-requisite courses.
n Applicants must be eligible for licensure and employment at the time of application.
n A grade of “C” (2.0) or better must be maintained in all courses with a
DEN, BIO, or CHM prefix. A failure in a clinically related area constitutes
withdrawal from the Dental Hygiene Curriculum.

As part of the capstone practicum course, students are given the opportunity
to further explore a specific area of interest through an internship. Based on
personal interest, students may partner with corporations, hospitals, public
health programs/facilities or educational institutions.
Admission Requirements:
n Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene
from an Accredited Program
n License to practice dental hygiene
n GPA to be considered.

n It is recommended that all Liberal Arts and Sciences
courses are at the 200 level and above.
n EGL 101 is a pre-requisite for all writing intensive courses.
n EGL 102 is a required course for all students
attending Farmingdale State College.
n Students must have earned a “C” or better
in EGL 101 & 102
