Murphy started in 1939 with a simple but powerful idea. The company’s founder, Frank W. “Pat” Murphy, an engine salesperson at the time, noticed the large number of engines that failed due to lack of engine protection. In order to fill this need, Pat created the Swichgage instrument – a switch combined with an indicating gage that could shut off the engine based on abnormal engine pressure or temperature. That spirit of reliable protection for engines has stayed with the company for more than 65 years. Since then, we have expanded to a very broad and exceptional line of products and services, all of which keep us the leader in engine monitoring and management. We have introduced hundreds of products that monitor, control and protect engines and driven equipment. Some measure pressure, temperature, liquid level, RPM, time and vibration. Other products provide a wide range of engine controls, from simple start/stop operation to fully-automated systems. We were the first to develop cutting-edge displays and gages for electronic J1939 engines. Murphy is still innovating today and invests millions of dollars annually in ongoing research and development. Several new products are released every year, each designed for durability and reliability. Our purpose is to provide complete product, system and service solutions that achieve effective management of our customers’ operations and equipment. Murphy is structured into two distinct business units, serving five separate markets. We focus on each industry’s needs and deliver an exact fit of products and services for your industry, your company and your equipment. Our Customer Focus Oil & Gas Murphy’s first success came in the oil and gas markets. The original Swichgage instrument was quickly embraced by oil companies who needed reliable engine protection. Today, Murphy’s oil and gas strategic business unit serves customer needs in field gas gathering, gas transmission and gas engine power generation. Our strength in these markets reflects Murphy’s reputation for reliability. Murphy products have been proven in the field for decades – from the original Swichgage instrument to the Tattletale annunciator to the latest electronic products. Murphy’s oil and gas products include fault annunciators, controllers, programmable logic controllers and equipment-mounted instrumentation that monitor fluid level, process pressure, temperature and equipment vibration. The Murphy Power Ignition® product line provides microprocessor-based, capacitor discharge ignition systems and components that maximize the power and operation of spark-ignited natural gas powered engines. Our Control Services and Systems division is dedicated to manufacturing panel and system solutions designed to your needs. Murphy has built on its success in the oil and gas markets beyond simple instrumentation to become your partner in total engine management. We deliver solid products, dependable performance and reliable results. We are driven by customer satisfaction and service. Our responsibility is to understand our external and internal customers’ needs, provide timely solutions, and fulfill our commitments. Murphy currently serves four industrial areas: ■ Off-Highway ■ Industrial Stationary ■ Generator Sets ■ Marine Our Customer Focus Industrial Murphy has been a true innovator in developing instruments and services that anticipate the changing needs of industrial markets. We led the way in helping to meet the latest engine environmental emissions regulations with instrumentation that eases the transition to electronic engines. The MurphyLink line of products were the first engine displays and gages compatible with J1939-CAN. The PowerView system represents the next generation of innovative J1939 display solutions with an improved interface, increased durability and fault code diagnostics. Our leadership position in J1939 instrumentation was accomplished by focusing on customer needs in every step of the design. We built rugged devices to survive the harshest environments, plus made them intuitive to use. Our technological advances continue to make the operator interface smoother, friendlier and easier to run. Murphy continues to provide such traditional products as gages, switches, controllers and panels for mechanical engines, but our latest products have been designed for the future of engine technology. Our electronic engine monitors and controllers offer more reliable operation, clearer diagnostics and simpler installation. Murphy‘s specialized Industrial Panel Division also provides quick delivery of standard or custom panels in a single one-stop solution for all industrial markets. The division offers a project-focused organization backed by vertically-integrated manufacturing capabilities. It offers customized instrumentation panels and packages, standard instrumentation panels and wire harnesses. Panel designs can be configured online through our website. We strive to achieve the best in all we do. Our responsibility to customers and ourselves is to ensure our actions reflect high standards. Quality is never compromised. Murphy’s innovations don’t just apply to products. Innovation is applied to all facets of our operations. Over the past several years, we have retooled our business for maximum productivity. We’ve made our manufacturing and supply chain lean. We’ve grown our throughput capacity, but kept our commitment to quality. Our Operational Focus Reliable Delivery When we promise, we deliver. During recent years we have aggressively restructured our manufacturing processes, implementing lean manufacturing and pull systems throughout the company. Delivery promises are dynamically generated by capturing real-time productivity projections along every step of the manufacturing cycle. This allows us to accurately predict how long each order will take to complete. Our on-time delivery performance is consistently above 95%. Global Sourcing Murphy is taking full advantage of business opportunities available through globalization to achieve lower costs while maintaining our quality requirements. We have outsourced manufacturing projects that are outside our core competencies, partnered with international logistics providers to maximize efficiency of global shipping and established a regional sourcing office and manufacturing operation within China to build a permanent connection to the growing resources there. In the U.S., we focused our domestic supply base and deepened our relationships with our strategic suppliers. This has created streamlined supply chains and a higher quality of service. We exceed the expectations of our employees, customers, and suppliers thus becoming their “Preferred Partner.” Operational Excellence Here are a few of Murphy’s most recent operational achievements: ■ ISO 9001 certified ■ Lean manufacturing implemented in just two years ■ 5S philosophy used in lean manufacturing ■ KanBan pull systems used on more than 90% of manufacturing materials ■ Class ‘A’ MRP certified utilizing APICS CE CPIM planners Our Operational Focus Integrated Supply Chain With a recent restructuring of the supply chain, we have integrated key suppliers into our manufacturing operations and warehouse. Instead of placing orders when parts are low, our vendors regularly inspect their stock items on-site and replenish it automatically–often at the point of use in the manufacturing process. That means fewer stock shortages and minimal surprises to disrupt our workflow. Our supplier performance is currently 95% on-time. Continuous Improvement At Murphy, planning, engineering, quality and manufacturing work together, producing faster communication, better teamwork and a rapid response to change. These internal “Value Stream Teams” constantly search each step of the manufacturing process to find areas that we can make smoother and more productive. When we find a bottleneck or a potentially slow point, we correct it for the long term. “The priceless ingredient in selecting controls is the name and integrity of the maker.” – F. W. ‘Pat’ Murphy The Murphy Edge What is the “Murphy Edge”? It is the many benefits you get when you work with Murphy. The “Murphy Edge” extends beyond our great products.
