Overview
The CHKD Pediatric Trauma Conference is a two-day pediatric conference
designed to provide knowledge and skills related to pediatric trauma. In
addition, we seek to enhance our community and pediatric colleague’s
ability to manage pediatric trauma cases. The conference will provide
various learning methodologies presented by experts in the areas
of pediatric trauma.
CME Credit
Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters is accredited by the Medical
Society of Virginia to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Day 1
7:30 a.m. Registration

Pediatric International Trauma Life Support
- Sponsored and Presented by Northstar
Pediatric ITLS is accepted internationally as the standard training course
for pre-hospital trauma care. It is a state-of-the-art continuing
education course and an essential curriculum in many First Responder,
EMT and EMT-Paramedic training programs. Pediatric ITLS combines
classroom learning and hands-on skill stations. Scenario assessment
stations enable you to put your learning to work in simulated pediatric
trauma situations.
12 p.m. Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization
PEARS teaches providers how to recognize respiratory distress, shock and
cardiac arrest, and provide appropriate lifesaving interventions within
the initial minutes of response until transfer to an advanced life support
provider. The goal of PEARS is to improve the quality of care provided to
seriously ill or injured infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes.
6 p.m. Networking Reception - Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters
Join the CHKD Trauma Team for a reception, free to all faculty, two-day
conference participants and those registered for our Saturday event.

Airway Management in the Pediatric Trauma Patient

Identify the challenges of pediatric airway anatomy. Review indications
for establishing a definitive airway. Discuss preparation, medications, and
special considerations for pediatric airway management in trauma. Review
techniques and technology available for challenging airway cases.
Pediatric MCI – A Community Event

Recognize multiple common manifestations of child abuse. Discuss
appropriate management and possible outcomes of such cases.
B. Silent Victims: Pediatric Trauma in Special Populations
- Katrina Lesher, MD
Discuss improved awareness of unique challenges of special needs
children and how to use environmental cues (adaptive equipment, facial
features) to identify needs. Discuss how to assess nonverbal or intellectually disabled trauma victims in the field. Additional challenges to trauma resuscitation in this patient population.
C. Pitfalls in Pediatric Trauma: A Simulation in Care of the Pediatric Trauma Patient

Discuss hazards that may arise with pediatric patients and the interventions
needed to provide care. Simulation mannequins are used to walk participants through a scenario of a pediatric trauma and the hidden symptoms that can lead to problems.

Describe the LifeNet program and explain how the organ donation of a pediatric patient affects the family and community.
