JIANGSU MARKET INSIGHTS In 2015, Jiangsu maintained its position as the second largest provincial economy in China with GDP of 1.1 trillion USD and a growth rate of 8.5% (exceeding the national average of 6.9%). The 13th 5-Year-Plan (2016-2020) places strong emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship. Jiangsu provincial government has acknowledged the critical role of innovation in its economic transition. In 2015, expenditure for R&D accounted for 2.55% (178.8 billion RMB) of the GDP in Jiangsu. Jiangsu is committed to increase this investment to 2.8% of its GDP in the next five years. The Jiangsu provincial government has mapped out long term strategies (“Three Steps and Two Plans”) to upgrade its industries and transform the province into a global industrial science and technology innovation centre by 2035. This includes transforming southern Jiangsu (including Nanjing, Wuxi, Changzhou, Suzhou and Zhenjiang) into an innovation demonstration hub. Jiangsu is also home to many Chinese venture capital companies with funds between 50 million RMB to 500 million. It also has one of China’s best IP protection frameworks with 8 Intellectual Property Protection Centres and the only IP xxx court outside of China. Last year, enterprises in Jiangsu remained the most active in IP application (150,000) and authorisation in China. There are also 14 Chinese key research labs located in Jiangsu and more than 10,000 high-tech enterprises in Jiangsu recognised by the Central Government as conducting research and innovation in areas complimentary to Australia’s strengths including ICT, new materials, advanced manufacturing, bio-tech and new medicines, new energy and efficiency, aviation, environment and clean tech, hi-tech services. Jiangsu is a major education hub and home to 137 higher education institutions, including 11 project 211 universities and 2 project 985 universities. These universities inject high-calibre ‘talent’ to the innovation ecosystem.
