Training – Dementia Special Care Units
Training in dementia for direct care
workers and activities staff in Special
Care Units
• Prior to being released from orientation
process – 8 hours of initial training
• Relevant staff providing care prior to
2/28/2014 trained by 5/29/2014.

Training – Traditional Units
Training for direct care workers in
traditional nursing home units
• Prior to being released from orientation
process – 8 hours of initial training
• Relevant staff providing care prior to
2/28/2014 trained by 8/27/2014.

Training
• Portable from facility to facility with
documentation of training in previous 24
months with no lapse in employment.
• Completed in addition to other training
requirements in regulations.
• Minimum of 4 hours annual in-service
training for all relevant staff (not in same
calendar year as initial)

• Train volunteers for tasks that they will
perform
• Maintain documentation of staff training
• New staff with previous training in last 24
months – obtain documentation from
previous employer; OR train employee

Definition of Direct Care Worker
• Staff member whose work involves extensive patient contact or
administrative decisions regarding care.
• “Direct care worker” not limited to those workers employed by
the nursing home
• Includes contracted workers who provide direct care to
residents.
• Includes but not limited to: the medical director, RN, LPN, NPs,
PAs, CNAs, activities personnel, feeding assistants, social
workers, dietary aides, OT, PT, ST staff.
• Office-based practitioners whose primary practice site is not in
the long-term care facility are exempt. Definition of examples of
exempt practitioners include but are not limited to: podiatrists,
dentists or primary care providers that are part of on-call medical
coverage arrangements.

Relevant Staff Members – direct care
workers, therapeutic activity directors and
supervisors of direct care staff.
Direct Care – any service, whether clinical
or not, that is provided directly to the
resident.

Content of Training
• Training in compliance with Department
guidelines.
• Must include a basic intro to the
foundations of dementia and dementia
care as well as other topics listed in
Department guidelines.
• Must be at least partially interactive, as
defined in guidelines of the Department.
• Must include an evaluation

• Training not complete until evaluation
complete and passed.
• Written documentation that relevant staff
has passed the evaluation.
• Training appropriate to the population
served, and must include cultural
competency.
• Must reflect current standards and best
practices in the treatment of dementia.

• Evaluation – a determination by the facility
that the individual is competent to provide
direct care to residents based on the
individual’s demonstration of competency
in the applicable skills and techniques.
