NES CPD/Clinical Effectiveness
Symposium 2016
Joint working between NES
Pharmacy and Dentistry
This year’s symposium is the 2nd collaborative event
with NES CPD taking place at the Apex Hotel in
Dundee on Wednesday, 5 October 2016 entitled
Sustainable Improvements for your Practice. We are
delighted to tell you that our keynote speaker is
Professor Jason Leitch, National Clinical Director for
Scottish Government’s Healthcare Quality and
Strategy, with many more presentations falling under
the quality improvement bracket. We’re hoping for
another packed day so don’t miss out and book your
place now via www.portal.scot.nhs.uk using course
code 045342. See you there!
Over the past three years the TRiaDS
programme have been working alongside NES
Pharmacy to apply the TRiaDS methodology in
the community pharmacy setting. In June this
year, NES and Community Pharmacy Scotland
(CPS) co-hosted a dissemination event to share
results and develop solutions with a view to
improving the quality of over-the-counter
consultations. Further information about this joint
working initiative and dissemination event can be
found at www.triads.org.uk/in-development/
community-pharmacy.
Update on SDCEP Conscious Sedation in Dentistry guidance
SDCEP is currently updating its Conscious Sedation in Dentistry guidance, to further promote the
provision of sedation for dental care that is both safe and effective. First launched in 2006 and partially
updated in 2012, this was SDCEP’s first guidance publication. This year, a Guidance Development Group
has been convened to carry out a more thorough review of the topic in light of various relevant
developments. These include publication of Safe Sedation Practice for Healthcare Procedures by the
Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) (2013) and Standards for Conscious Sedation in the
Provision of Dental Care: Report of the Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry
(IACSD) (2015), and an evidence update for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
Guideline: Sedation in Children and Young People (2012). Other relevant guidelines and systematic
reviews have also been identified. The process for development of recommendations follows the GRADE
approach, with considered judgements based on the quality of evidence, the balance of
risks and benefits, the values and preferences of the patients, and the practicalities of the
treatment. SDCEP expects to make a draft of the guidance available for open
consultation in the autumn, with publication of the third edition in early 2017.

Anti-resorptive or Anti-angiogenic Drugs
Draft guidance developed by SDCEP entitled Oral Health Management of Patients Prescribed Antiresorptive or Anti-angiogenic Drugs is now available for consultation (ends 1 October 2016). This is an
update to the Oral Health Management of Patients Prescribed Bisphosphonates guidance and takes into
account the wider range of drugs that have been implicated in the development of medication-related
osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). The draft guidance aims to clarify the current recommendations and
expert advice for the dental management of patients taking these drugs. The consultation is an
opportunity for anyone to comment and influence the development of the guidance. Both the draft
guidance and feedback form are available to download from our website www.sdcep.org.uk and we are
particularly keen to receive views on the style of the document, the advice provided and the impact that
this guidance may have on practice or provision of care. If you would like to get involved or provide any
feedback on this guidance document, please contact Heather Cassie at heather.cassie@nes.scot.nhs.uk.
Patient Safety
Publications/Posters
The Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP) in
Primary Care was introduced in 2010. The aim of
this programme is to reduce the number of events
which could cause avoidable harm from healthcare
delivered in any primary care healthcare setting. In
2015 Heath Improvement Scotland (HIS) were
tasked with introducing this Quality Improvement
initiative to General Dental Services. They applied
a Collaborative Model and three Health Boards
were selected to take this forward each recruiting
five general dental practices. The topic of choice
for this Collaborative was high risk medication and
medical histories. SDCEP Guidance was used to
set the standard required for improvement. The
five practices were introduced to using Quality
Improvement Methodology and were asked to take
part in a Safety Climate Survey (Dental SafeQuest)
which is being facilitated by SDPBRN. The project,
due to end in December 2016, has been a steep
learning curve for the SPSP team and dental
practices. The data will be collated to determine if
this methodology has a place in dental practice as
a tool for dental quality improvement in practice.
