Recent Courses Taught Introduction to Psychology (face to face and online) Psychology of Personality Psychology of Religion and Spirituality Psychology of the Holocaust Points of Distinction 2015 Outstanding Educator Award. This award was given to 35 faculty members across the Minnesota State College and University system in recognition of exceptional commitment to teaching, continuous professional development, and service to students, the college, profession, and system. 2014 Distinguished Faculty Award. This award is given to one faculty member per year at commencement. It is based on student nominations of faculty who have made a significant difference in students’ time at Normandale Community College. Religious Studies Certificate Program. I co-led an effort to design and implement this new Certificate program at Normandale. It went into effect in 2014. Psychology of the Holocaust Field Trips. In March, 2013, this included a 1-day trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, in partnership with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas. In March, 2012, this included a 10-day trip to Holocaust sites in Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary. Campus Events. I have organized many campus events at Normandale. Highlights include Psychology speakers, interfaith discussions, a concentration camp survivor speaker in 2012 with approximately 500 in attendance, and a 3-day commemoration of Kristallnacht in 2013 with approximately 600 in attendance (featuring an exhibit from World Without Genocide and necklaces created with the Art Department). Jack and Anita Hess Seminar. In 2011, I participated in this small seminar of 23 scholars from across the world at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. I was the only representative from a Community College and the only representative from a Psychology Department. Faculty Awards for Excellence. Four awards granted from 2006-2008 that supported original research in the psychology of religion, development of a blog, preparation of an article on teaching psychology of religion, and integration of service learning into the Psychology curriculum. Total amount: $23,000. The two blogs that came from these awards have generated over 125,000 hits combined. Most Cited Paper. Co-authored the #1 most cited paper (according to “web of science”) in the 60-year history of the Journal of Counseling Psychology, the top journal in my field. This 2004 paper teaches researchers how to do moderation and mediation statistical analyses, and has been cited over 2,400 times. 1998 Exemplary Paper Award in Humility Theology. This award from the John Templeton Foundation recognized the contributions of a paper I first authored on the topic of religious coping to the understanding of how religion and spirituality functions in society today.
