The National Electrical, Electronics and Computing Conference 2009 The IEEE Philippines Section together with the IEEE De La Salle University Student Branch held the National Electrical, Electronics and Computing Conference 2009 from December 9 to 11, 2009. The conference took place at the SM Mall of Asia and included a series of talks and sessions conducted by leading professionals and students in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and other related fields. The theme for the threeday conference was ‘Pioneering the Future – Passing the Torch to Next Generation Engineers’. As mentioned in the welcome remarks by Dr. Alvin B. Culaba, the General Chair for the NEECC 2009, the conference primarily aimed to foster participation and 2 collaboration of everyone who attended in research and development so as to elevate the status of technology in the country. The keynote speech was given by Dr. David Cartes from the Florida State University. He highlighted the people's growing demand for energy; the problems that arise because of it; and the appropriate steps that should be taken. Different renewable energy sources were discussed including solar energy, which could be used for base-load generation. Taking a close look into energy issues, Dr. Cartes made an analysis of Florida's current and future energy sources and energy consumption. A similar analysis was made for the Philippines. Plenary talks were given by key people from prominent schools in and outside the country such as National University of Singapore, University of the Philippines Diliman, and Florida State University, by people from various companies such as E-Gizmo, Perkin Elmer, Toshiba Philippines, and SiTest Solutions Hong Kong, and by people from the public sector, such as DOST-ASTI, and the International Energy Agency. The talks covered various topics such as robotics, signals processing, energy systems, bioenergy research, disaster risk management, system-in-package (SIP) devices, photo detectors and transmitters, hard disk drive technology, IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6), and embedded systems. Parallel sessions which allowed students and researchers from different universities to present their researches were also conducted. The sessions covered topics of Power and Energy, Signals Processing, Robotics and Control, Communications Systems, Circuits and Systems, and Computing Architecture and Systems. • Major Student Activities 1. Dancing Robot Competition A dancing robot competition, co-sponsored by E-Gizmo, was held during the National Electrical, Electronics and Computing Conference. There were three groups who competed, each vying for the prize of Ten Thousand Pesos. Each group was able to make three robots move in harmony and in tune with their own chosen music. The The Dancing Robot Competition sponsored by E-gizmo and the IEEE Philippines Section had three groups that made their robots move in harmony and in tune with their own chosen music conference was both informative and stimulating. It provided information on some of the latest research and innovations in technology and inspired everyone to further do research and development and make their own contribution to the evergrowing field of technology. 3 A.2 Financial Report – (Please follow the format given below) • Summary (as per submitted L50) The Philippines Section remains in good financial health. Receipts for 2009 amounted to approximately US$25,400.00 (includes sponsorships from companies and grant agencies in the Philippines and transfers from the IEEE Custody Account), while expenses amounted to around US$16,500.00.
