and plans are under way for an anniversary celebration of the
University’s founding. Events will take place in 2003 commemorating this special occasion. A 40th
anniversary committee is chaired by Robert C. Braddock (“Class of 1970”), professor of history. For those with
events planned in 2003, the committee has suggested groups consider a 40th anniversary or “1963” theme.
Those interested in working with the committee to develop their themes, may contact Braddock at ext. 4360.

Susie Emond, the
2002 Rush Lecturer, will
challenge teachers to
“High-Stakes Teaching
(not Testing): The True
Test for Us As
Educators.” Emond’s
lecture will take place at
Susie Emond
4 p.m., Thursday, Oct.
10 in Founders Hall.
Since the early 1990s, Emond said,
school reform has been driven by corporate
America, encouraging teachers to better
prepare students. She said that needs to
be done not just through testing.
• Ron Portwine, assistant director of staff
relations, and his wife, Heidi, gave birth
to a son, Cameron (8 lbs., 5 oz., 21 in.),

INTERIOR • October 8, 2002
“If we want to raise scores and do
better on tests, we need to do better
teaching through the assignments we
give,” Emond said. Emond said she will
discuss her keys to effective teaching.
A professor of teacher education,
Emond is the fifth Rush Lecturer named
by the SVSU Foundation Board of
Directors. She is chair of the Department
of Teacher Education: Elementary, Early
Childhood and Special Education.
Thomas and Hilda Rush of Midland
created the Rush Endowment as part of
the Campaign for Distinction. For more
information, call ext. 4042.
As you can
see, we have
updated the
Interior’s look
and feel. The
red, white and
blue banner reflects the University’s
primary institutional color palette. The
bell tower is one of the University’s
most well-known icons. Another
unique perspective on the bell tower, is
that the four bells can be thought of as
decade markers reflecting the
University’s 40-year anniversary in
2003. The University seal, of course,
has an important historical significance
for SVSU, and is our strongest
“foundation” logo.
Our objective with the Interior is to
provide a vital and high-quality news
distribution forum that evolves with
the needs of the University. The
foundation of our news base will be
information about the University, and
about important topics, which you the
reader, want to promote to the rest of
the University population. In addition
to the Interior’s regular news pages, we
will continue to highlight special events
and news via the inserts that you have
seen in the past. We welcome your
input, articles of interest to the general
University population and your ideas.

In a show of solidarity of purpose,

Rotary International.
The two institutions will formalize the
chapter during a charter ceremony on

the Rotary Club of Saginaw-Sunrise, are
coordinating the new organization:
