Dr. Virginia Calvin
Chancellor
Ivy Tech Community College
Dr. Virginia Calvin has served
the community as an educator
and community leader for over
30 years. Beginning in 1972,
Calvin held numerous administrative positions with the South
Bend Community School Corporation. When serving as acting executive director of curriculum and instruction, she
initiated a “Valuing Diversity”
program and as principal of
Muessel School, she led the
school to recognition as one of
“America’s Best Elementary
Schools.” In 1993 she was
named superintendent of the
South Bend Community School
Corporation – the first woman
and the first African American to
hold that position. While serving
as superintendent, Calvin moved
the corporation out of a deficit,
initiated various programs for atrisk students and increased school
campus security.
On July 1, 2000, Calvin became
chancellor of Ivy Tech Community
College-North Central which has
campuses in South Bend, Elkhart
and Warsaw. As chancellor, she
helped expand the college’s mission from a career/technical institution to a full-service community
college. Calvin’s region was the
first to offer the associate of arts
degree which greatly benefited
students who wanted to complete the first two years of a
bachelor’s degree at Ivy Tech
and then transfer to a four-year
institution.

Never underestimate the little people;
they have more knowledge than you
think
Never pass up an opportunity
When asked the question to all by Dr.
Calvin, what two adjectives best describe yourself, Dr. Carol Mooney,
President of Saint Mary’s College,
responds “happy and busy.”
Bonnie Bazata, Sarita Fritzler and Kimberly Hodges all share there appreciation to Dr. Calvin.
Every other Monday from noon to 1:00 pm the Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership
and the Board of Governance sponsor a Leadership Lunch and welcome community women in
leadership onto campus to share their stories with the Saint Mary’s community. It is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to get connected with our women leaders and discuss a
variety of issues and concerns. It also opens opportunities for student internships.
Sarita Fritzler a senior Political Science major plays an important role in organizing this event.
