Dewan Simon
Dewan Simon was born and raised in South Bend, attended
Harrison Elementary, Navarre Middle and Washington High
Schools. While attending Washington he was a three sport star
athlete: football, basketball, and baseball; was class president;
and was first chair trumpeter. He graduated from Washington in
1992 having achieved a number of academic recognitions including Outstanding Minority Student of the Year. He attended
the University of Notre Dame, played varsity baseball and
earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He
obtained an Executive MBA in International Business from
Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale,
Arizona and earned the Political Science Honor of “Pi Sigma
Alpha” and The International Foreign Language Honor of “Phi
Sigma Iota” in Mandarin, Chinese.
Dewan attributes his spiritual foundation and life success to his
uncle Charles Black Sr. who filled the role of father and mentor. The late Charles Martin was
another of his many male role models that helped validate Dewan’s desire to strive for perfection and to pursue academic excellence. Dewan prospered from these early influences and is
now the owner and managing principal of GCI Experts (Global Continuous Improvement
Experts), a consulting firm that helps corporations and businesses streamline their processes
and optimize front office efficiency for maximizing productivity and profitability. His company
is involved in a broad spectrum of industries and has achieved multimillion-dollar impact and
double digit percentage improvements for their clients: from automotive, chemical, food
process, government, healthcare, insurance, call centers and IT businesses to name a few. Part
of his success is due to his business expertise and part is due to his ability to build relationships
that foster trust and generate consensus with cross-functional teams in complex environments.
Dewan has worked and consulted in over 15 countries and has been recognized as an innovative
problem-solver. He was nominated for the Presidential Innovation Award and has won awards
in Environmental Excellence and in Energy Technology Innovation. He has worked for Allied
Signal (Research and Development), Rohm and Hass (Corporate Asset Manager), DLS Consulting (Managing Director), and Cardinal Healthcare (Director of Operational Excellence). He
currently sits on the Corporate Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of East Valley,
Phoenix, Arizona, servicing over 43,000 youths annually at eleven branches.
Dewan is married to Miriam Simon. They reside in El Mirage, AZ with their two children:
Dewan Simon II, age 2 years, and Aliyah Simon, age 4 months.
In grateful recognition of your dedication and personal commitment to community service
and your love and respect for humanity.

ROLAND KELLY AWARD WINNER
Michael Dvorak was elected the St. Joseph County Prosecutor in 2002 and has just completed his
third term. Although he decided not to run for a fourth term, he will still be a presence in South Bend.
He is a native of South Bend, graduating from St. Joseph High School, attaining his BA in History at
Loyola University in Chicago, and receiving his law degree from Western State University College of Law
in San Diego. Michael worked as a deputy prosecutor in Modesto, California. In 1977, he returned to
South Bend, where he worked as a part time public defender while establishing a private practice. Mr.
Dvorak resigned as a public defender in 1986 and was then elected to his first of eight terms in the Indiana
House of Representatives, serving until 2002 when he was first elected as Prosecuting Attorney for St. Joseph County.
Mr. Dvorak has been active in community organizations including coaching youth soccer and serving as
president of his homeowners’ association. He has served on statewide commissions, including the Criminal Law Study Commission, the Commission on Abused and Neglected Children, and the State Prenatal
Substance Abuse Commission. He helped to establish the Family Justice Center of St. Joseph County, and
currently serves on the CASIE Center board.
In Honor of Roland Kelly
“Roland Kelly will always be remembered as a tireless champion of South Bend. He was a man of principle,
loyalty and great love. He believed in fairness, and in protecting the rights of all people. He never shied away
from doing the right thing, but was the consummate peacemaker, uniting South Bend residents for the common
good. For over sixty years, Roland enriched our community: as a student and life-long fan of Notre Dame, as
an outstanding local journalist, as a member of the business community, and for 15 years as a public servant.
His commitment to the MLK Foundation of St. Joseph County showed a glimpse of his good heart and indomitable spirit. He was a friend, colleague and trusted advisor. I will miss his advice, I will miss the twinkle
in his eye, his wit and wisdom.”
--Mayor Stephen J. Luecke, City of South Bend
October 21,1926 to May 26, 2007
The Martin Luther King Foundation of St. Joseph County established THE ROLAND KELLY AWARD
in 2009 to honor one of its founders and long term, active Board Member and to recognize a South Bend
citizen who exemplify the ideals and actions that guided his life. The plaque reads:
“In recognition of your dedication to community ideals through the promotion of diversity, love and respect for all humanity. Thank you for
your service to our community”.

White Like Me
Century Center / Recital Hall
Using the documentary film, “White Like Me,” as a catalyst, there will be a
discussion on Race, Racism & White Privilege in America Based on the
work of acclaimed anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise, “White Like
Me” explores race and racism in the U.S. through the lens of whiteness and
white privilege. In a stunning reassessment of the American ideal of meritocracy and claims that we’ve entered a post-racial society, Wise offers a
fascinating look back at the race based white entitlement programs that built
the American middle class, and argues that our failure as a society to come
to terms with this legacy of white privilege continues to perpetuate racial
inequality and race-driven political resentments today. Linda Ponterio,
Regina Preston-Williams and Peter Stone will lead the discussion with Charlotte Pfeifer bringing
the session to a close with a wrap up summary of the conversation.
Coordinated by Regina Preston-Williams, Linda Ponterio (Spiral Up! Co-founders)

VOTE TO MAKE A
DIFFERENCE
LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING
Verse #1:
Lift every voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has
taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has
brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won
Verse #3:
God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,
Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God,
where we met Thee.
Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world,
we forget Thee.
Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever
stand, True to our God, true to our native land
