Job # 15-0008 – Technician, Corrosion – Independence, KS
Position Information
This position is accountable under intermittent supervision for all areas of corrosion mitigation within
assign area, along with any other duties assigned within the Region.
This position reports to and is directly accountable to the Supervisor of Corrosion Services and is
responsible for the basic level installation, monitoring, maintenance of corrosion mitigation systems,
related auxiliary facilities and equipment in a designated area of a natural gas system utilizing close
technical support and supervisory guidance. The individual will perform at a satisfactory level while
maintaining positive and ethical relationships with others including customers, consultants, and vendors.
This technician will receive work related guidance from senior level Corrosion Technicians and Corrosion
support personnel. This individual will internally interface with all levels of Operations personnel and
accept assigned responsibilities.
Primary Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to):
Key Job Responsibilities:
Maintenance, Troubleshooting, & Prevention



Designs, installs, monitors, tests and repairs cathodic protection facilities (anode ground beds,
rectifiers) and other corrosion mitigation systems as well as inspection of contractor installed of
facilities and surveys.
Acquires the skills necessary to operate test equipment to identify cathodic protection facility
problems and assist in making repairs as required
Provides on-the-job training and guidance to less knowledgeable Operations personnel
Compliance



Knowledge and familiar with Southern Star’s policies, procedures, O&M manual, and CFR 192
subsection I.
Performs pipeline corrosion surveys (pipe-to-soil, atmospheric, bond, casings and rectifier) and
maintains (computerized and hard copy) records for appropriate Company and regulatory
requirements
Represents Company during internal and external audits pertaining to corrosion control

Familiar with natural gas properties and proper handling procedures associated


Become a competent person for excavation activities
Become qualified on Common Covered Tasks (OQ) as deemed necessary by Corrosion
Management
Familiar with the policies and procedures related to performing pipeline inspections







Assist qualified personnel on validation digs to become familiar with the process
Familiar with Southern Star’s procedure 70.14.01, Pipeline fitting leak and defect repair procedure
Familiar with the Pipeline Toolbox software and its applicable tools
Familiar with Southern Star’s coating systems and their applications
Familiar with internal corrosion monitoring devices and basic guidelines for performing MIC tests
Perform other duties as assigned by supervision
Physical Requirements
Primary physical requirements include (but not limited to): Working in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.
Lifting and pulling of up to 100 pounds. Working with and/or around chemicals. Repetitive lifting, stooping,
crawling, walking standing and sitting. Working in high or elevated areas. Monitoring multiple functions with
multiple required tasks. The work environment will include extreme weather conditions and high noise levels.
Travel of up to 50% of the time, which will require overnight stays. Long distance driving in both day and night
hours. Flexibility of working unscheduled overtime based on business needs. Long periods of inputting data
into Corrosion & Company specific software.
Qualifications
Minimum:


Two year associate degree, related certification, or work experience as determined by the
Company
0-3 years’ Corrosion related experience
Valid driver’s license and insurability
Basic Computer Skills –Windows based and Microsoft Office Programs
Demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgment
Demonstrate satisfactory oral and written communication skills, leadership and problemsolving skills
Ability to work in a scheduled structured, deadline driven environment




Previous pipeline experience
Corrosion training/work experience
Knowledge of CFR 192 regulations
NACE certification





