Main purpose of job:
The Public Awareness Manager will be responsible for key cross organisational
social marketing campaigns to build on the increased awareness and understanding
of dementia and drive attitude and behavioural change.
Position in the organisation:
The Public Awareness Manager will report to the Head of External Communications
and will be part of the External Affairs directorate. He or she will manage two/three
members of staff and additional volunteers. Line management responsibility could be
reasonably expected to grow over time.
The Public Awareness Manager will work and engage with staff and volunteers at all
levels to deliver cross – organisational social marketing campaigns. They will be a
leader with exceptional internal and external relationships across the Society. Good
interpersonal communications are essential .
Scope of job:
Alzheimer’s Society’s vision is a world without , dementia the Public Awareness
Manager will play a key role in ensuring this becomes a reality.
The Public Awareness Manager will play a key role within the external
communications team to champion the rights of people with dementia and their
carers.
The role operates at operational management levels, and significantly contributes to
the success of many other functions. Key responsibilities include:
 Develop and manage the Public Awareness Team , and ensure their work is
delivered on time and on budget
 Ensure Alzheimer’s Society’s communications strategy and External Affair’s
business plan are delivered effectively
 Design, deliver and evaluate social marketing campaigns, and provide
oversight on the Society’s plans to improve diagnosis rates of dementia
 Lead the development of communications programme to engage key
audiences in work to make local communities more dementia friendly
 Commission and manage market research to measure progress and changing
attitudes and behaviours
This post contributes to raising the profile of Alzheimer’s Society and increasing
understanding of dementia in the public domain leading to attitude and behavioural
change.
Occasional travel will be required.

Dimensions and limits of authority:
 As a marketing and communications specialist, the post holder will be
expected to work largely on his/her own initiative.
 He/she will be required to manage major marketing and communications
projects for the Alzheimer’s Society, delivering successful external and
internal communications
 He/she will line manage three/four members of staff, and will be responsible
for a budget in excess of £300,000
 The post holder will work collaboratively across the organisation in order to
achieve their objectives
 The Public Awareness Manager will represent the Alzheimer’s Society at
external events and conferences and will be required to manage and build
relationships with key external figures.
Duties and key responsibilities:
Develop and manage the Public Awareness team, and ensure their work is
delivered on time and on budget
 Manage communications staff and volunteers in the Public Awareness team
 Ensure that the communications strategy and external affairs business plan is
successfully delivered across areas of responsibility
 Maximise opportunities for awareness raising by working across the
directorates of the organisation
 Work with the Regional Communications Team Manager and Stakeholder
Relations Managers to ensure that campaigns developed nationally are locally
appropriate
Design, deliver and evaluate national social marketing and awareness
campaigns
 Develop and deliver national social marketing and awareness campaigns to
identified target audiences on time and to budget
 Manage a range of projects and programmes, and develop communications
plans to involve colleagues from across the organisation
 Develop effective marketing communication materials. Ensure all extern
campaigns are effectively communicated internally and work with Alzheimer’s
Society service teams in Operations to maximise the messages of the
campaigns
 Work with the Head of Marketing, Head of External Communications, Director
of External Affairs and Head of Policy and Public Affairs to ensure the
effective implementation of the organisation’s communications strategy
 Monitor the impact of Alzheimer’s Society’s campaigns, evaluate campaign
effectiveness and make recommendations for future campaigns
 When appropriate, work with fundraising teams to develop proposals to
exploit funding opportunities for national campaigns
 Develop relationships with strategic partners to increase the impact of
Alzheimer’s Society’s social marketing campaigns (for example, Department
of Health, Public Health England etc.)
 Identify opportunities in the external environment to develop social marketing
campaigns on dementia and exploit these opportunities
 Identify the needs to develop new campaigns to respond to local
opportunities to increase understanding of dementia
Lead the development of a social marketing programme to engage key
audiences in work to make local communities more dementia friendly
 Work with the Dementia Friendly Communities programme manager to
develop a social marketing and communications plan for the lifetime of the
programme, ensuring that it is aligned to the organisation’s overall plans
 Develop, test, design and evaluate awareness campaigns to reach identified
target audiences to increase understanding of dementia and the needs for
communities to become more dementia friendly (This could include work with
schools and education, individual campaigners, business sectors etc)
 Manage an Awareness Officer to ensure these projects are delivered on time
and on budget and in partnership with others

dementia.

that all practices and procedures are undertaken in accordance with a healthy
and safe working environment and that all staff and volunteers for whom you
may be responsible are aware of their responsibilities in respect of their role,
monitoring data and recommending action as required.
6. Where appropriate, to recruit, induct and support volunteers.
7. To undertake any other tasks, duties or projects which may arise from time to
time which are commensurate with the general level of this post and as directed
by the designated line manager.
