Useful tips COVERS The LF-LTS-COVER-SHORTPITCH is specifically designed for LINEARlight FLEX Shortpitch (LF06S). Using a product with LED pitch greater than 8.3mm may result in hot spots. Use LF-LTS-COVER-DIFFUSE to obtain homogeneous light for the LINEARlight FLEX modules LF06P2 and LF06A. LF-LTS-COVER-CLEAR can be used with any of the products, but will not diffuse the light. LF-LTS MB (Mounting Bracket) It is recommended to use every 0.5-0.8m (1.6- 2.6ft) a Mounting Bracket. For example the LF-LTS-2100 Slim Track has a total length of 2.1m (6.8ft), 4 Mounting Brackets are sufficient. 0.5-0.8 m (1.6- 2.6ft) LF-LTS MB (Mounting Bracket) as a connector The LF-LTS MB can be used to attach two track pieces. Place the two pieces of Track into the Mounting Bracket 5 Slide together the Track pieces LINEARlight FLEX® Track Installation Guide | LED099R1 | November 2013 LINEARlight FLEX® Installation Guide 5. Thermals The LINEARlight FLEX modules are designed for high reliability and efficient operation even at elevated ambient temperatures. Nonetheless, thermal management is important and can greatly improve the operation and lifetime of the modules. Figure 1 shows the temperature versus time for a LINEARlight FLEX POWER FLEX LF06P2 mounted in the Track system. In steady state operation the temperature T C is 65°C @ an ambient temperature Ta = 25 °C. temperature Tc vs. time 70 65 temperature [°C] 60 55 50 45 40 35 30 25 20 0 10 20 30 40 50 time [min] 60 70 Ta = 25°C LF06P2 in Slim Track Figure 1: Temperature vs. time for LF06P2 mounted in Track System Figure 2: Power density scale for LINEARlight FLEX modules The LINEARlight FLEX modules depending on watts per meter can be divided into different power classes (modules). The lifetime of these modules depends on the Tc point temperature respectively Ts (Solderpoint) and Tj(Junction). Depending on the installation and the ambient conditions etc. the Tc will be changing . A higher Tc, above max., will result in shorter than rated lifetime. Figure 2 is an overview of the power densities for the LINEARlight Flex modules. It is not a temperature scale, but combining figure 1 and figure 2, one can say, that under same conditions (Ta = 25°C etc.) the temperature TC of 65°C will not be exceeded by any LINEARlight FLEX module mentioned in figure 2. A proper thermal management is only done by measuring the temperature at the T C point in steady-state operation at maximum load. 6 LINEARlight FLEX® Track Installation Guide | LED099R1 | November 2013 LINEARlight FLEX® Installation Guide 6. LINEARlight FLEX® Protect Application and mounting mechanism 1. For Outdoor applications apply the tape to the track or metal surface at temperatures above 59°F (15 °C). 2. Once properly applied at temperatures above 15°C and allowed to cure for 24hrs, the product can then be introduced to temperatures down to -25°C. 3. Slim fit mounting track, NAED 72356 is recommended for all applications in addition to the double sided tape provided at the back-surface of the module to securely hold the LINEARlight FLEX ® regardless of temperature especially when the 59°F (15 °C) installation criteria cannot be satisfied. 4. In applications where the mounting track cannot be used the optional flexible mounting bracket, NAED 72363 can be used to secure the product. 5. NAED 72363, optional flexible mounting bracket can also be used as an additional mounting aid especially in cases where temperature is rising above 40°C. Peel tape and mount the module onto the mounting track Slim fit mounting track 9 LINEARlight FLEX® Track Installation Guide | LED099R1 | November 2013 LINEARlight FLEX® Installation Guide 6. LINEARlight FLEX® Protect Application and mounting mechanism Slim Fit mounting track designed to securely hold LINEARlight FLEX ® Protect LED module Optional flexible mounting bracket screws Note: 1. To fix the Linearlight Flex ® Protect module, use #4x1/4“ Pan head screws or any sheet metal screws suitable for the application, tightened with 0,1 Nm. 2. The optional flexible mounting bracket has to be mounted in the middle of two LEDs. Do not cover the LED! 3. The distance between two brackets can vary, depending on the used module. With distance of 10-20 cm one achieve a good result. This is not a strict specification, in fact it depends also on the application. 10 LINEARlight FLEX® Track Installation Guide | LED099R1 | November 2013 LINEARlight FLEX® Installation Guide What not to do 11 LINEARlight FLEX® Track Installation Guide | LED099R1 | November 2013 LINEARlight FLEX® Installation Guide What not to do 12 LINEARlight FLEX® Track Installation Guide | LED099R1 | November 2013 LINEARlight FLEX® Installation Guide Safety Information 13 LINEARlight FLEX® Track Installation Guide | LED099R1 | November 2013 LINEARlight FLEX® Installation Guide Assembly Information • The LINEARlight FLEX® POWER FLEX Protect must be mounted on an appropriate metal heat sink. • The Smallest Electrical Unit can be removed by cutting with scissors before or after the designated solder pad. • The module may also be cut at points X1 or X2 (reference “Assembly Diagram” for locations). The following must be observed when making cuts at these locations: • Observe the correct orientation of the module: The power feed must come from the side indicated in the technical drawing. • The module must not be cut before the first two LEDs, which have the Tc Point in between them. This part would emit no light. • To operate the desired subunits, the termination LF-2TERM must be applied. Disengage the terminations locking mechanism, slide it over the open contacts and press the locking mechanism back in place. • The mounting of the module is facilitated by means of the double-sided adhesive on the back-surface of the module. Care must be taken to provide a clean and dry mounting surface, free of oils or silicone coatings as well as dirt particles. The mounting substrate must have sufficient structural integrity. Take care to completely remove the adhesive backing. Once the module is appropriately positioned, press on the module with about 20N/cm2 . For additional information on the double sided tape please contact your sales personnel. • Solder connections should only be performed on designated solder pads (marked “24V +/-”). During soldering, do not exceed the maximum soldering time of 10 seconds and the maximum soldering temperature of 260°C. • Connecting soldered wires to an un-mounted module: Solder pads must not be pre-tinned. However, the wires must be pre-tinned at a max. 4 sec. at 300°C. Allow solder points to completely cool down before performing the next soldering. Prevent shear, or peel forces. • Connecting soldered wires to a module mounted on a heat sink: Pre-tin solder pads and wires and solder for max. 3 sec. at 350°C. Allow solder points to completely cool down before performing the next soldering. Prevent shear, or peel forces. • For applications involving exposure to humidity and dust, the module must be protected by a fixture, or housing with a suitable protection class. 14 LINEARlight FLEX® Track Installation Guide | LED099R1 | November 2013 LINEARlight FLEX® Installation Guide Assembly Information 15 • The module can be protected against condensation by treatment with an appropriate circuit board grade conformal coating. The conformal coating should have the following features: • Optical transparency • UV – resistance • Thermal expansion matching the thermal expansion of the module 15-30 x 10^6cm/cm/K • Low permeability of steam for all climate conditions • Resistance against corrosive environment • Note: Since this module’s connectors are “Dry Location Only” rated, they must not be used as a connection means when conformal coating becomes necessary. Soldered wires are the appropriate connection means used in conjunction with conformal coating. Any of the necessary steps 2, 3, 5, 6, & 7 must be completed before conformal coating can be applied. • The minimum bending radius is 0.78 in. The module may be bent over a smaller radius but only in regions of the circuit board containing no electronic components. Such bends should be made only once and fixed in position to avoid cyclic fatigue. • The thermal expansion coefficient along the length of the module is 17 x 10^-6cm/cm/K. When installing in environments with large variations in temperature (e.g. outdoor applications) and operating length of more than 2m, the use of metallic mounting surfaces is necessary. Otherwise it is advisable to use , as required, additional thicker layers of double sided adhesive tape present on the module to absorb the stress of any mismatch in expansion coefficients. Contact sales personnel for double sided tape data sheet. • Parallel connection is highly recommended as safe electrical mode. Serial connection is not recommended. Unbalanced voltage drop can cause hazardous overload and damage the LED module. • The maximum length of a coherently operable unit is one full reel. By two-pole feed in the middle or from both ends the length can be doubled. • When mounting on metallic or otherwise conductive surfaces, there needs to be electrical isolation at soldering points between module and mounting surface.
