Overview
The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) in conjunction with the City's Department of Parks and Recreation
(PP&R) and Department of Public Property (DPP) are working towards the development of a resource manual
for Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI). The manual is intended to ultimately serve and guide City and
consultant engineers with the appropriate selection, sizing, and placement of GSI within public parks and
recreation facilities.
As one of the initial steps in producing a standardized set of tools for the implementation of GSI in park settings,
the following details were identified as high priority. The details are developed as standards to assist in
streamlining the design process for both in-house design and consultant - led projects. They are intended to be
implemented and applied to a range of park development, redevelopment, and retrofit projects.
The detail template includes basic material specifications and practices that can be applied to an overall GSI
system design. Basic operations and maintenance practices have been outlined and provisions included for
developing sizing criteria for each detail. Individual detail sizing criteria, applications, operations and
maintenance, and basic construction guidelines will be further developed for each detail.
The infiltration pit and bioretention facility were identified as pilot details. These details will be implemented
immediately as opportunities present themselves on a test basis and performance monitored to determine the
overall performance of each.
The construction details illustrated thus far present the most efficient and practical basic design solutions and
will serve as the basis for developing additional standard GSI details. The following references in conjunction
with peer reviews by PWD staff engineers were utilized in the development of the detail set.
