Mr. James Powell, M.Eng., P.Eng., is the Area Manager for Mine and Infrastructure with Alderon Iron Ore Corp. Mr. Powell has academic training in civil, geotechnical and mining engineering and has over 15 years of experience in mining, geotechnical, and civil engineering. Mr. Powell’s previous consulting engineering career included engineering and environmental project work with NL, Canadian, and international mining companies covering all stages of the mining life cycle from early exploration, through environmental and economic assessment, operations and on into mine rehabilitation and closure. This experience includes secondment roles to operating mines such as IOCC and Wabush Mines' Scully Mine, and long-term engineering consultation relationships with several mining companies from early mine planning and development through to operations. Mr. Powell’s consulting experience included management of the geotechnical and mining engineering group for Newfoundland and Labrador at Stantec Consulting Ltd, and management of large (up to multi-million dollar value), multidisciplinary mining-related projects for exploration, mine development, and operating mining companies, and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. As Area Manager of Mine and Infrastructures for Alderon Iron Ore Ltd, Mr. Powell is primarily responsible for the design and construction of the Labrador West open pit mine and general infrastructure including roads, rail, bridges, non-process buildings, tailings management facility, mine waste dumps, maintenance facility, sedimentation ponds, fuel storage and delivery, and water supply and effluent treatment systems. Mr. Powell has held positions on the Board of Directors for the Consulting Engineers of Newfoundland and Labrador since 2006 as Director, President, and now Past President. James has also been involved with Mining Industry NL since 2006 as a past Director and in support of committees.
