COORDINATED DESIGN, PRODUCTION AND SUPPLY CHAIN DECISIONS IN GLOBAL MANUFACTURING Roger Jiao* Nanyang Technological University In order to meet increasing customer demands for more diverse product offerings, firms are revising their product creation process to accommodate mass customisation. Coordinating decisions across product design, manufacturing and production planning, and supply chain management has attracted much attention from both academia and industries alike. Companies like Sony, Black & Decker, and Kodak have implemented strategies to design and develop an entire family of products based on a common product platform to satisfy a wide variety of customer requirements while leveraging economies of scale and scope. This presentation will introduce our past and on-going research in this field, along with a few industrial applications. In particular, challenges and research issues of developing and managing extended product family configure-to-order platforms will be discussed. Future research directions will be also outlined towards a synergy of customers, product, process and logistics. 1 Name: Roger Jiao Division: Systems & Engineering Management, NTU Email: jiao@ieee.org Contact Number: 65- 6790 4143 Biography/Research Interests Roger Jiao is Assistant Professor of Systems and Engineering Management in School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.
