• A dual basket strainer design that allows continuous flow of the
fluid during cleaning. No shut down is required to clean the dirty
basket so the process is not interrupted.
• The change over from one basket to another is made by turning
the single lever.
• Threaded connections are provided on the side and bottom of
both basket chambers so that the process liquid can be
completely drained if necessary.
• Large capacity baskets increase operating time and reduce the
frequency of cleaning.
• Double stem O-rings provide positive sealing even under the
most arduous service conditions.
• The unique reinforced seats require no adjustment and are
designed to provide the longest possible life.
• Piston seal chamber covers with quick open fixings allow the
baskets to be removed quickly and easily for cleaning without
any special tools.
• The 53BTX will operate effectively without any lubrication of the
diverter mechanism, unlike other designs which require regular
injections of grease.
• A low profile design combined with full size baskets allows easy
installation without compromising the low pressure drop.

Backwashing
Automatic Strainer
DN 50 to 1200 (2" to 48")
Iron, Bronze, Carbon Steel or Stainless Steel
• Eaton self-cleaning strainers are designed for the continuous
removal of entrained solids from fresh, brackish or salt water.
• They have performed successfully in industrial, power, process, waste
water, paper and municipal applications for over 30 years.
• A comprehensive range of sizes, models and materials is available,
to suit various duties and operating conditions.
• Ideal for systems where high flows means that manual cleaning is
impractical and also where continuous flow is required.
• Fully automatic function, complete with a control system that ensures
optimum cleaning is achieved at all times.
• A small proportion of the screening element is cleaned, whilst the
remaining screen area continues to strain. There is no interruption of
flow during the cleaning cycle.
• Often installed in remote, unmanned locations, or in hazardous
environments where personnel are at risk.
• Commonly used on water service where the disposal of the backwash
water is not a problem.
• Most frequently used to clean water and protect capital equipment
such as membrane filters, heat exchangers, pumps and spray
nozzles. Ensures the quality and efficiency of cooling water, filters
secondary effluent for use as wash water and provides clean water
for quenching and de-scaling in the primary metals industry.

Backwashing Operation

Ring
DuraWedge®
Screen Element
• Dirt laden fluid enters the bottom chamber of the strainer, where
the velocity decreases allowing larger debris to "Drop out" preventing damage of the element. The fluid then flows through the element - inside to outside. Any dirt or particles present are prevented
from passing through by the element, and clean fluid flows out of
the strainer.

Fluid Inlet
• At a set moment, a timer in the control panel switches on the
motor that is fixed to the top of the strainer. This motor is connected to the central backwash arm that begins to rotate.
• At the same time, the control panel also sends a signal to an actuated ball valve on the backwash outlet causing this to open.
• As the strainer is operating in a pressurised system and the backwash discharge is now open to atmosphere, the difference in
pressure causes a small amount of the strained fluid to pass back
in reverse through the element.
• The returned fluid rinses off the debris from the inside of the element, directly in front of the backwash collector. The backwash
water and debris is carried down through the hollow collector and
is discharged to a drain.
• Backwashing continues until the timer reaches its pre-set duration.
The control panel then closes the backwash valve and shuts down
the motor simultaneously, returning the strainer to normal straining
status.
• A differential pressure switch is fitted to the strainer as a security
device, in case cleaning is required between timed cycles. This
measures the pressure loss across the strainer, and overrides the
timer in the control panel should the element start to clog or if
there is a particular incidence of turbidity in the system.

DuraWedge® Element
Convoluted Element
DuraWedge® is a non-clogging Stainless Steel straining element
constructed from V-Shaped profile wire.
Vertical collector bars form spaces to accumulate debris and dirt and
prevent "Ploughing" of this material by the rotating backwash arm,
whilst also allowing focused cleaning of the element segment by
segment. The V-Shaped profile increases the velocity of the reverse
flow during backwash for optimum cleaning, and also helps prevent
stapling of fibres. The all welded design with reinforcing bands
provides structural integrity and significantly increase the
operational lifetime of the element.
A rugged and economical Stainless
Steel element, made from convoluted
plate for optimum filtration area.
Reinforcing bands provide added
resistance to pressure and flexing,
whilst the cartridge design aids removal
for inspection. The convoluted sections
provide collection spaces to prevent
any "Ploughing" of dirt and debris by
the rotating backwash arm.

BASKETS & ELEMENTS
Basket and Element Types
The basket or element is the heart of a Eaton strainer. After a particular
type of strainer housing has been selected, equal concern should be
given to the basket or screen design and the perforation or mesh size, for
this alone determines the ultimate functionality and performance of the
strainer.
Cylindrical
Standard baskets with bow-shaped handles which are pushed down by
the cover to ensure a tight seal in the strainer body. This is the standard
type of perforated or mesh basket available in Stainless Steel or Monel.
Pleated (Convoluted)
Pleated, open type baskets which have a very low pressure drop. The
convoluted or pleated structure gives a much greater straining area then
other designs.
Elements (Screens)
Used in self cleaning strainers instead of baskets to trap unwanted
particles and debris. These items are designed so that debris is easily
dislodged during backwashing, and can be made from perforated
plate, sinter bonded mesh and wedge wire (DuraWedge®).
Slanted (Elliptical) Top
The slanted open top design allows fluid to enter easily and cuts down
pressure drop. This also allows inline connections on fabricated bodies,
and also the use of smaller baskets in multi-basket strainers so that
these can be removed easily by one person, even on very large units.
14
TECHNICAL
Strainer Selection
Basket strainers should always be "Sized" to avoid exceeding the maximum permissible pressure drop of the chosen
strainer and basket combination when clean. "Sizing" will determine the pressure loss for a given strainer and basket
combination, and therefore ensure the satisfactory operation of the strainer and also the longest possible service life.
Our sales team will be happy to discuss your requirements and select a suitable strainer for you.
