Compared to the control (standard commercial kibbles containing 5% water and standard acid
preservatives), pet food kibbles with increased water content to 11% and acid preservatives
replaced by FRA® Pet Food Maxi, showed decreased pathogen growth and safe water activity values.
Kibbles were analyzed 4 months after production. (2013, The Netherlands, Portugal and Brazil)
Optimize quality
Adding FRA® Pet Food Maxi to pet food kibbles enhances product quality. Even with
higher water content in the kibble, adding FRA® Pet Food Maxi increases fat stability
resulting in decreased oxidation reactions.

Compared to the control (standard commercial kibbles, 5% water content and inclusion of
commercial acid preservatives), kibbles with increased water content to 11% and acid
preservatives replaced by FRA® Pet Food Maxi, showed strongly decreased peroxide formation and
extended oxidative fat stability measured via Rancimat. The difference in Rancimat values indicate
extended shelf life of open bag storage. (2013, The Netherlands , Portugal and Brazil)
Optimize palatability
FRA® Pet Food Maxi effectively protects pet food against pathogen growth and product
quality degradation and can be used to replace standard acid preservatives.
FRA® Pet Food Maxi is neutral in smell and taste. Combined with a safe increase in water
content of the kibbles, adding FRA® Pet Food Maxi enhances palatability.

Recommended usage
» Apply both in the pet food ingredient mash as well as in
the kibble coating blend.
» Liquid product: include 0.25% in the food mash during
ingredient mixing and 0.5% in the kibble coating blend.
» Dry product: include 0.5% in the food mash during
ingredient mixing and 1.0% in the kibble coating blend.

The Challenge
The Solution
The major challenge of every pet food manufacturer is to produce a safe,
natural and tasty product with assured quality and shelf life. Increasing water
content of pet food kibbles enhances palatability, but at the same time allows
growth of molds and bacteria that pose a risk to animal health. Furthermore,
once exposed to air, light and surrounding humidity, the nutritional
ingredients become subject to degradation for example due to oxidation
reactions.
Framelco have developed FRA® Pet Food Maxi: a specific formula containing
1-monoglycerides and carefully selected micro-ingredients. This new
formulation allows pet food manufacturers to produce safe, healthy and tasty
pet food while increasing the water content.
To guarantee pet food safety, the industry currently uses a variety of organic
acids and salts for preservation, such as calcium propionate and sorbic acid.
However, these preservatives are often corrosive and may negatively affect
product smell and palatability. Due to the limited acid inclusion rate, pet food
safety can only be guaranteed by restricting the water content of the kibble.
There is a strong need for a natural preservative that assures pet food safety
and nutritional quality while increasing the water content to enhance pet
food palatability.
» 1-Monoglycerides
FRA® Pet Food Maxi contains short chain 1-monoglycerides that control
growth of molds and foodborne pathogenic bacteria.
These 1-monoglycerides are stronger than acids, are non-corrosive and have
a neutral taste and smell.
» Micro-ingredients
Adding a small amount of carefully selected micro-ingredients induces a
synergistic effect enhancing product quality. These natural micro-ingredients
stimulate the antipathogenic activity of the 1-monoglycerides and support
the efficacy of the anti-oxidants present in the feed to control product quality
degradation.
