ABB Switzerland
Competence, expertise and innovative technologies
for a sustainable future
Within the ABB Group, ABB Switzerland
has global responsibility for many products
and systems, in power engineering and
automation. Thanks to its innovations,
the expertise of its employees and its
proximity to customers, ABB’s Swiss
operations make a valuable contribution,
enabling customers to raise industrial
productivity, improve energy efficiency
and ensure grid reliability.
ABB is a leader in the power and automation technology
sector and has around 6,300 employees in Switzerland. The
company’s Swiss operations, headquartered in Baden, are an
important part of the Group. ABB Switzerland is the global
center for a range of products and systems and also supports
the Group’s key technologies with world-class R&D facilities.
As an integral part of the ABB Group, ABB Switzerland benefits from a worldwide network of technical experts, sales and
teams, and customers.
ABB Switzerland serves international markets: around 85 percent of its products, systems and services are used abroad.
The majority of the company’s employees, who come from
more than 80 countries, work in the areas of project management, engineering, sales and distribution, commissioning,
service, and research and development. Approximately a
quarter of the workforce work in production.
ABB offers its employees exciting opportunities in an open,
innovative and goal-oriented environment that values both
teamwork and self-reliance. Attractive and versatile working
models, such as annual working hours, part-time work, job
sharing or teleworking, accommodate the differing lifestyles
of our employees. Ten child care facilities and a preschool
at six locations ensure more flexibility for families.
ABB Switzerland supplies power technologies to electricity,
gas and water utilities. The products and services cover
almost all of ABB’s power portfolio, from large equipment for
power stations to sockets for the home. Switchgears, power
semiconductors, transformers and substations contribute to
the efficient transmission and distribution of electricity, while
extensive system solutions provide better monitoring of supply
networks, optimization of power transmission and optimal use
of system capacity.
energy-saving technologies include low-loss electricity transmission via high-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC),
and turbochargers, which can quadruple the performance of
a diesel engine and reduce fuel consumption by 10 percent.
Competent customer service
ABB is proud of the service it offers its customers. In Switzerland, customers are looked after by an expert sales and
service organization, a key-account team or by one of our
five regional offices. Each of these groups provides products,
systems and services from ABB’s comprehensive portfolio
and access to representatives in ABB locations, in Switzerland and across the ABB Group.
ABB supplies automation technologies to the food and
beverage, chemical, mechanical engineering, and shipbuilding
sectors, as well as the metal, mining and printing industries.
Our automation applications use variable-speed drives, which
enable motors to draw only the power they need from the grid,
avoiding waste and helping to reduce environmental impact.
ABB robots increase productivity in the manufacturing sector,
while highly sensitive control systems do the same for the
cement and paper industries. In hospitals, underground railways and wind parks, protective devices ensure that electricity
is distributed efficiently.
Thanks to this close network, the broad industry-specific
expertise and their proximity to the customers, our sales and
service specialists can guarantee an expert advisory service
as well as sound technical and commercial support. An efficient and accessible service organization is also guaranteed.
ABB’s service portfolio includes lifecycle support for products
and systems, full plant maintenance, and consultancy, for
example on energy efficiency.
Innovation is our lifeblood
For a technology group like ABB, innovation is essential for
survival. The research center in Baden-Dättwil is one of seven
Group research centers. Around 180 employees from more
than 30 countries work there. Research projects focus primarily
on power electronics, high-voltage technology, automation
technology and materials science. The Swiss center is also
the global headquarters of ABB’s power technology research.

The researchers and engineers are working to improve the
methods and technologies on which the company’s products
and systems are based, and to develop new technologies for
the future. The research centers work in close collaboration
with ABB’s operational units, focusing on the company’s key
aim of sustainability: reducing both energy consumption and
environmental impact.
Using energy efficiently
Energy efficiency has tremendous potential to reduce power
consumption and therefore environmental impact. Many of
ABB’s products, systems and services help to reduce losses
along the energy supply chain. By helping customers to use
energy more effectively, through better plant management
and improved productivity, consumption can be reduced by
around a quarter.
For example, medium-voltage variable-speed drives, made
in Turgi, Switzerland, can reduce energy consumption of an
electric motor by 50 percent or more without any loss of
performance. ABB’s installed base of medium-voltage drives
are estimated to avoid more than 100 million metric tons of
carbon dioxide emissions every year. Further examples of
