Corbin Schools Recognized by SESC

The Southeast Southcentral Educational Cooperative, SESC, recognized area
schools for their 2015 Kentucky test scores at their monthly meeting in London,
Kentucky on November 12, 2015. SESC Executive Director David Johnson
presented recognition banners to the schools for their achievements. Dr. Stephen
Pruitt, the new Kentucky Education Commissioner, was also in attendance to
congratulate the schools.
The Corbin Independent School District received numerous awards. The Corbin
District received a Distinguished District banner for scoring in the 98th percentile
in the state. Corbin High School, Corbin Middle School, and Corbin Intermediate
School each received a School of Distinction banner for scoring between the
95th and 99th percentile in the state. School of Distinction is the highest honor
an individual school can achieve. Corbin Middle School and the Corbin District
each received Top 10 Achievement banners for being ranked in the top 10 in the
state. Lastly, the Corbin District, Corbin Middle School, and Corbin High School
each received a SESC Gold Medalist banner.
Corbin Schools administrators were present at the meeting to receive the awards.
The principals gave all credit to the faculty, staff, and students of the Corbin
Independent School District.
“I am honored to represent CHS as we received several awards in recognition
of our outstanding state accountability scores. Obviously, the credit goes to our
teachers and students, because they are the ones who manufactured and produced
the results,” Corbin High School Principal John Crawford said.
Corbin Middle School Principal Cindy Davis agreed, “All of these
accomplishments are a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication that
comes from the faculty, staff, and students. Thank you for everything you do
everyday.”

CHS Hosts KSBA Regional Meeting
Corbin Schools hosted the Regional Kentucky School Board Association Meeting at Corbin High School.
Corbin Schools hosted the event due to Corbin Board of Education Chairperson, Kim Croley, being elected as the regional
board chairperson. Croley was elected chairperson in 2014 and serves the Upper Cumberland region. The meeting consisted of
workshops and presentations for the regions board members and superintendents.
“The meeting is held in each region on a rotating three year basis to allow school board members within the region to receive
Professional Development opportunities close to home,” Chair Croley said. “Corbin High School was our
gracious host and the school shone bright in every way.”
Corbin High School students assisted with the hosting duties, with culinary students
providing and serving hors d’oeuvres, art students displaying their recent artwork, and student
Zach Hart providing live musical entertainment. The entertainment was followed by a dinner,
catered by Corbin Food Service, and the KSBA presentations. The meeting program was
entitled “If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?”
Approximately 60 board members and superintendents attended the regional
meeting. Each person in attendance received a gift bag and door prizes were awarded
at the end of the evening. Board members and superintendents were complimentary
of the meeting and facilities. Corbin Schools would like to thank the Corbin High School
students and staff, Corbin Food Services staff, Alicia Hammack and Rhonda Gabbard,
and our community partners for providing the door prizes.

Veterans Day Programs
CHS Students Attend
EKU Arts Seminar
Corbin Schools celebrated Veterans
Day, November 11, 2015.
Each school held a special program
to recognize the sacrifice of our local
veterans. Corbin High School, Corbin
Intermediate School, Corbin Middle
School, and Corbin Elementary
held assemblies for their students.

High School and Corbin Elementary
School Students, Bob Terrell spoke
to Corbin Middle School students,
and Colonel Arley Longworth spoke
to Corbin Intermediate School
students. They shared their personal
experiences as well as the meaning
of Veterans Day. Local veterans were
invited to attend the assemblies.
Corbin Primary School hosted
their annual veterans breakfast and
parade. Students were able to invite
veterans to the school. The students
got the opportunity to perform for
the veterans and have breakfast
with them. Following breakfast, the
students lined the halls and cheered
for the veterans as they walked
through. Nearly 200 veterans and
their families were in attendance.

Representative Regina Bunch for
donating flags for each student to
wave during the parade.
Corbin High School JROTC students
attended each of the ceremonies.
Corbin Schools host veterans for a
special assemblies each year.
Corbin High School students Matthew Laun,
Brenna Ingle, and Katie Ingle were selected
to attend a Regional Visual Arts Seminar at
Eastern Kentucky University Corbin Campus.
The students were selected for the event based
on their identification as Gifted and Talented
in Visual Arts. At the seminar, the students
spent the day creating pop art. They had the
opportunity to create jewelry, costumes, and
back drops.
“It was truly amazing to see these students
create costumes out of a variety of fabric and
material. They also created jewelry out of
everything from plastic baby hair brushes to
an assortment of beads and clay,” Corbin High
School Teacher Kim Moore said.
The Corbin students joined other students
from local schools including Lynn
Camp, Williamsburg, Knox Central, and
Barbourville. The students were paired with
students from the other schools for the
project. Each group chose a theme and created
their projects based on the theme. The event
was hosted by the head of the Art Department
at EKU and EKU senior art students assisted
with the projects.

CMS Hosts Pumpkins in the Park
Corbin Middle School students hosted Pumpkins in the Park at Sanders Park in downtown Corbin. The event was held during
the downtown trick or treat event.
The students displayed 75 painted pumpkins at the event as well as offered crafts and face painting for the downtown trick or
treaters. They also served apple cider and offered presentations of the new Corbin Middle School.
Corbin Middle School had 40 students working the event. Members of the Junior Beta Club, Miss Congeniality Club, CMS
Ambassadors, and CMS student artists helped plan and organize the event. Students recorded PSAs, wrote stories for the local
papers, interviewed Mr. McNeel on the CMS building project, supplied and participated in crafts, and painted faces. Numerous
children and parents attended the event throughout the downtown trick or treat.
The pumpkins displayed in the park were painted by Corbin Middle School students. The school hosted four days of afterschool
pumpkin painting for any students wishing to participate. Two local artists, Kay Gray and Susan White, worked with the students
to create the pumpkins. The local artists judged the finished pumpkins before displaying them at the event. The winners were:
1st Place: Abe Lincoln by Kayley Partin and Cleopatra by Allie Pennington.
2nd Place: Dog by Jackson Moore and Trae Skinner and Cat by Anthony Risner.
3rd Place: Minion by Cameron Alsip and Cinderella by Emma Smith.
Honorable Mention Awards: ET by Baleigh Walden, Gumball by Kaylee Morales, Laura Ingles by Madison Lundy, Tin Man by
Andrea Dugger, and Elephant by Hailey Hembree
The event was held in support of Parent and Community Involvement. The next event is Family Math Night on November 17
from 5 - 7 p.m. at Corbin Middle School.

CMS Students Participate in Annual Scientist Project
Corbin Middle School seventh grade students participated in their annual scientist project.
As part of the project, the seventh grade students dressed as their assigned scientist and presented a
presentation to the class. The project teaches students the importance of science and history.
“The students learn about scientists and how they have impacted history. It also teaches
them how to do correct research and public speaking skills.” Corbin Middle School Science
Teacher Corean Rougeux said.
The students are required to research their scientist, complete a biography poster, type a speech, and give the
speech on why their scientist should win the lifetime achievement award in science. Students completed the
project on scientist such as Ben Franklin, Jane Goodall, Neil Armstrong, and Sally Ride. Each of the 230
seventh grade students had a different scientist.
All seventh grade students are required to participate in the
project which is held every year around Halloween. Corbin Middle
School has been participating the scientist project for more than
two decades.
Berea Festival Dancers Visit Corbin Elementary
The Berea Festival Dancers visited Corbin
Elementary School.
The Berea Festival Dancers performed
numerous dances for the elementary students.
The event helped to educate students on
Appalachian dance as part of their Arts and
Humanities classes. The students learned folk
dances, Indian ritual dances, and dances from
other countries.
“Third and fourth graders have likely not
seen this type of dance; however, their ability to participate in it was fun for them, as well as a positive and kinetic educational
opportunity.” 21st Century Program Coordinator Chelsea Moberly said.
Moberly, a previous Berea Festival Dancer, coordinated the event for students. All Corbin Elementary students attended the event
and Redhound Enrichment students attended a dance workshop with the group.
The Berea Festival Dancers is comprised of 40 middle and high school students of the Berea community. The group is a noncompetitive group that practices, performs, and travels. The group has the opportunity to perform at schools, festivals, and local
Elderhostels as well as go on many national and international trips.

CPC, CPS Hosts Trunk or Treat
Corbin Preschool Center
and Corbin Primary
School hosted a trunk
or treat for students this
Halloween.
Trunk or Treat consists
of parents or guardians
setting up their cars
to hand out candy to
students. The parents
decorate the trunks of
their car for the students
to view. The students
are able to go from
car to car collecting
treats. The schools had
approximately 15 cars set
up for the event.
The purpose of the event is to promote family involvement and
create a fun activity for students. The Corbin Preschool Center
has participated in the event for two years and this was Corbin
Primary students first year participating.
Corbin Schools would like to thank all parent volunteers who
helped with this event.
CHS Hosts Costume Contest
Corbin High School hosted their first Halloween
Costume Contest to promote positive school climate and
celebrate Halloween.
AIM classes had the opportunity to select a costume
for their teacher for the event. During the contest, each
teacher was introduced in their costume to all Corbin
High School students. The students then voted to select
the winning costume by grade level. The winners were:
Grade 9: Brian Theodore - Scarecrow
Grade 10: Kim Moore - Shrek
Grade 11: Pam Bishop & Tosha Wallen - The Book Fairy
and Mary Poppins
Grade 12: Josh Watkins - Colonel Sanders
The winning AIM classes received treat bags.
Redhound Enrichment Hosts Lights on Afterschool
Redhound Enrichment hosted their “Lights on Afterschool” event at Corbin Primary
School.
The family night activity, themed “Boo Fest”, involved carnival games, food, pumpkin
painting, and other fun fall family activities. Students participated in fall festival type games
for candy and prizes.
All Redhound Enrichment and The Zone students as well as their families were invited
to attend the event. The purpose of the event was to promote a fun atmosphere for family
togetherness. Family involvement is an important aspect of the 21st Century Redhound
Enrichment and Zone programs.
