ED BY CH AR TW ELL S NEWS Volume 44 Issue No. 26 March 26, 2012 www.fsu.ca/interrobang/ 3 Fleming riots burn Fanshawe College KIRSTEN ROSENKRANTZ INTERROBANG On the night of March 17, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations on Fleming Drive spiraled downward into a full-blown riot. The City of London, London Police Service, Fanshawe College and the London community as a whole have been left trying to figure out what to do with those who participated in this act of civil disobedience, how this happened, how it can be prevented in the future and how the reputation of Fanshawe College can be repaired. Fleming Drive has a history of incidents similar to this one, though they were typically on a much smaller scale. The area has gained a reputation for its parties and draws crowds from other postsecondary schools, other cities and even area high schools. Marty Thompson, a first-year Broadcast Journalism student at Fanshawe, was in the area at a friend’s house on St. Patrick’s Day. He described how the events unfolded that night, noting that the entire incident started with a couch that was set on fire, something that has happened on Fleming Drive many times in the past. He said that with the crowd acting violently towards emergency service workers, he was surprised they weren’t acting violently towards each other. “I never felt in danger. It was surreal, for sure … It was just a bonfire. It felt like that. It felt like people were (just) gathered,” he said. During the riot, 1,000 young people took over Fleming Drive, flipped over and lit a CTV news van on fire and added furniture, TVs and propane tanks to that fire, pelted police officers, fire crews and EMS with bottles, wooden boards from fences, car tires and hub caps. In total, 17 police cars were damaged and the overall destruction is estimated to have cost the city over $100,000. Some of the young people involved in the riot took to various social media sites including Twitter and Facebook to brag about their involvement. Since then, screenshots of these posts as well as photos of people involved in the riots have been added to the Fleming Riots St. Pat’s Day 2012 Facebook page (tinyurl.com/flemingriots) to assist police in identifying alleged rioters. As of March 21, 15 people had been arrested and 13 charged with charges including unlawful assembly, assaulting police with a weapon, obstructing police, mischief under $5000 and resisting arrest. Those charged are: Jacob Biggelar, Jordan DeRose, Peter Donohoe, Michael King, Blaine Mills, Kory Puklicz, Brian Garton, Stephania Smieja-Henry, Michael Moore, Ryan McMahon and two 15-year-old’s whose identities are protected under the Young Offenders Act. Of those charged, six are currently Fanshawe students and have since been given interim suspensions. Dr. Howard Rundle, President of Fanshawe College, said in a press conference on March 19, “Fanshawe’s Student Code of Conduct does reach into the community when the actions of a student impacts the safety and health of those in the college,” stating that students who are convicted of charges relating to this riot could face expulsion. “Someone that would throw a brick at someone else, someone that would start a fire. That, to me, that’s not only a criminal act, (but) that kind of person is dangerous on our campus. We don’t want them here and our policy does allow us now to have them removed,” he added. Veronica Barahona, President of the Fanshawe Student Union (FSU) said that the union supports the college’s decision to expel those students who are convicted. “I think that in this case we have to follow suit with whatever the College moves forward with. I think that when it affects the health and safety of our students … it’s detrimental,” she said. “In the future, the college and the Student Union need to tread cautiously and follow the Student Code of Conduct (when considering expulsion),” she continued. London Police Chief Brad Duncan said in a press conference on March 18, “To the students and others who committed these criminal acts, we are engaged in identifying those involved. We are already receiving many tips with respect to the responsible parties and there will be further arrests and charges in connection with (the riot).” The London Police Service (LPS) and Fanshawe College have worked together numerous times in an effort to prevent occurrences such as this one from happening. Project L.E.A.R.N (Liquor Enforcement and Reduction in Noise) is a collaborative project between the LPS, Fanshawe College and the University of Western Ontario dedicated to reminding students who come to London in September to be respectful. “The Fleming Drive area has been the subject of much discussion over the past several years and recently our efforts during Project L.E.A.R.N, our fall back-to-school initiative, (were) seemingly making a big difference in terms of negative student behaviour,” said Duncan. However, this riot has left many wondering whether or not young people in the Fleming area actually got the message. “We’re very proactive through Project L.E.A.R.N. and we try to get the message out to our students about the repercussions of their actions, and honestly, I think there’s only so many times we can do that,” said Barahona. Once the investigation is over, Rundle said he plans to sit down with LPS to find more ways to prevent these incidents. “I’m not the expert to tell them, I want them to suggest to us the things we should do, what our responsibilities should be, what should the Student Union be doing. Is there something? I don’t think handing out flyers the day before St. Patrick’s Day is going to do squat,” he said. Rundle also pointed out a number of social issues that played a role in this riot, including society’s tolerance of binge drinking, labeling St. Paddy’s Day a party day, as well as calling into question some of the values being instilled into youth by parents. “If my kids had behaved that way, their biggest problem would not have been with the police, it would not have been with the insti- tutions, it would have been with their mother and dad,” he said. “What on earth is happening in these families that a kid can go off and behave that way? That I don’t know; that’s a social question … I think this has exposed some deep questions that are worth examining.” Ultimately, Barahona said this issue boils down to housing. “I don’t think that it’s Fanshawe College, and I get really frustrated when people blame this college because it’s a housing issue … There are five students per house and about 300 houses, how many students do you have there? It becomes a party mentality no matter what we do, no matter how much effort … We sat with Emily Marcoccia (Fashawe’s Director of Marketing and Communications), LPS, the City of London, every stakeholder in the community three weeks ago and talked about our plan going forward, and this happened,” she said. “This incident does not affect the attitude or the character of the majority of the current students, but we are aware that this incident will reflect badly on our college and the students we represent,” said Barahona. Current Fanshawe students and alumni are concerned about how this incident will affect the image of the college and have taken action to protect their reputations. A group of students created Project Fanshawe College (tinyurl.com/projectfc) to help raise money to cover the costs of the damages caused by the riot, and some Fanshawe alumni circulated CREDIT: LFPRESS.COM A crowd gathers around an overturned car in the Fleming Drive area, a short distance from the College on St. Patrick’s Day. a petition demanding that involved students be expelled (tinyurl.com/alumpetition). “I think the starting thing is really being seen to be punishing those who are clearly guilty of what they did and having the whole community see that,” said Rundle, discussing how the college is working to maintain their positive reputation. However, from his perspective, the only way to really ensure that this type of event is avoided in the future is by dealing with the Fleming Drive area itself. “Is it possible to break up that enclave? Because if that could be done, this would never happen; it can’t physically happen,” he said. Anyone with information regarding the riot is encouraged to contact LPS at tips@police.london.ca or by phone at 519-6605842, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Rebuilding after the riot ERIKA FAUST INTERROBANG http://www.law.uwo.ca/cls/ The St. Patrick’s Day riot on Fleming Drive drew many comparisons to Project X, a movie that documents an out-of-control party. Taking inspiration from this, and wanting to create something positive out of what some called “Project Fanshawe,” Youssef Meddoui teamed up with a couple of friends to create Project Fanshawe College, a group that aims to clean up the mess the rioters left behind. Meddoui, who graduated from Fanshawe’s Business and Information Systems in December, was talking with a friend, Khatab Hindi, on Facebook after the riot took place. “Everyone around London has been blaming Fanshawe students (for what happened),” he said, adding that he wanted to change that negative perception. He said he thought of the Kony 2012 video and how it raised awareness for an important issue. “(I thought,) let’s make a video – show that Fanshawe students are not what everybody says they are,” Meddoui said. “(Let’s show) that we’re hardworking students, we sit in the library, face to the book, trying to get good grades, trying to be successful.” From there, Meddoui and Hindi created a group on Facebook called Project Fanshawe College. “We made this group Sunday night, 6 p.m., and within one day, 560 members (had joined). It literally exploded,” said Meddoui. He and Hindi teamed up with Brad Redman, Ashleyy Foster, Beth Jackson and Haley Wiltshire to take the project further, coming up with ways to raise money to repair the damage done to Fleming Drive. “We’re trying to create a lot of different events so we can raise as much money as we can to cover as much of the cost as we possibly can for the fences, the road that was paved, the police cars that were completely broken, the CTV van,” said Redman, a student in Fanshawe’s Pre-Technology program. “It’s a lot of cost to cover and we most likely can’t cover it all, but at least we can help.” The group organized a bottle drive that took place on March 24, and will be holding a bake sale in Forwell Hall on March 27 and 28. They said they plan to hold more events in the future. Meddoui said the money will be passed along to the City of London, where it will be distributed to the proper departments to take care of the damages. Both Meddoui and Redman said they think this group could become a permanent one on campus. “It has a potential to turn into a group that could join the Fanshawe Student Union and go through the generations and continue the volunteer work and good deeds,” said Redman. The St. Patrick’s Day riot has left many Fanshawe students and alumni ashamed and embarrassed about the actions of a small number of people from the Fanshawe community. Many are worried about how Fanshawe is being portrayed in the media, and some are concerned that this negative attention will have serious consequences on their job hunts – even for people who had nothing to do with the riots – simply because of the school they attended. One Fanshawe student has already lost a co-op position out of town because of the St. Patrick’s Day events. Another student attended a job fair, where all anyone wanted to talk to her about was the riot, not her skills or qualifications. Neither student was present at the riots, but they and others are already experiencing its negative effects. Ashley Hake, who is in her second year of Fanshawe’s Financial Planning Services program and is just weeks away from graduating, said she definitely thinks the riot will have a negative impact on her job search. “I have worked so hard to get this diploma, and now I have to work even harder to find a job. Most of the application process is online and I am afraid that once they see that I just recently graduated from Fanshawe College, they will overlook my application … I am hoping employers will realize that not everyone who participated in the riot was from Fanshawe College.” Shaman Ayerhart, who graduated from Fanshawe’s Music Industry Arts program in 2008, was so concerned about the negative fallout from the riot that he and several other alumni started an online petition called “Fanshawe College: Expel students involved in rioting.” (The petition is now closed, but you can view it online at tinyurl.com/alumpetition.) “We want these guys (made an example of),” said Ayerhart. “We want them publicly expelled, we want their names, and we want them barred from ever going to Fanshawe again. We want our administration to take a stand against this sort of behaviour.” People who signed the petition could also post a reason why they signed it. “There were numerous responses on the petition website from Fanshawe graduates who were saying, ‘We will not hire a Fanshawe graduate from this year,’” said Ayerhart. “We’re all questioning what a diploma from Fanshawe is worth. No other college in Ontario has this problem … We just feel like (College administration) has a responsibility to all alumni to improve the image of our school. That image is rapidly deteriorating and it’s devaluing our diplomas, certificates and degrees.” The petition closed after reaching over 2,000 signatures in 24 hours, and Ayerhart sent it to Fanshawe College President Dr. Howard Rundle, the Chair of the Board of Governors, the Chair of the Alumni Association and major news networks across Canada. Local businesses have also shown that their decisions about who to hire may be affected by the events. Shawn Adamsson, Vice President of Operations at rtraction, a digital design firm in London and vocal Fanshawe supporter, tweeted a message to student rioters in the early hours of March 18: “Dear #Fanshawe students: if you’re involved in this riot you needn’t bother putting a resume in front of me. Think about your future NOW.” Not everyone believes that the riot is going to have as negative an impact on Fanshawe alumni and students as they may fear. Doug Millar, Manager of Fanshawe’s Career, Co-operative Education and Community Employment Services, said he said he feels comfortable that, for the most part, students will still find employment opportunities in London and outside the city. “Such publicity is never good, but our employers are smarter than that,” he said. “Our employers have worked with this college for over 40 years … the employers know that coming to the college to find workers is in their best interest as well.” College President Rundle agreed. Despite the history of violence around the Fleming area over the past years, “Employment success of Fanshawe graduates is higher than average amongst all colleges and has been all throughout this period,” he said, adding that he didn’t think the St. Patrick’s Day events will have an impact. “When people stop and think, (they) realize that we’re talking about maybe 100 misbehaving people and 16,900 behaving people. Every college or university of our size will have just as many misbehaving people.” www.fsu.ca E K I L IT’S ELLING V A R T T-CL ASS FIRS FREE LEGAL SE SERVICES ERVICES TO ALLL FULL-TIME FANSHAWE FANSSHAWE STUDENTSS you the ould give r two or three c a m lo into yea rism dip ss or tou transfer straight e in s u b r d to You s you nee m: VIP statu er degree progra b of a Hum iness plied Bus t p A f o r lo Bache gemen Mana Tourism COURTESY COUR RTESY OF THE FFANSHAWE AN NSHAWE STUDENT UNION N Find out if you are eligible. The 2008 recession hit young workers hard: workers under 25 held more than half of the 430,000 jobs that were lost over the recession, though they represent onesixth of the labour force. Those between the ages of 20 and 24 have fared better than those in the 15 to 19 bracket, but job recovery is still dismal for all young workers though the recession has ended. And 175,000 young workers have left the labour market since the start of the recession — meaning they just stopped looking. Youth unemployment now stands at 14.5 per cent, double that of the regular population. This is a trend that accompanies economic slowdowns, said Francis Fong, Economist and Author of the study, pointing to similar situations in the ’80s and ’90s. “Young people have always taken the brunt of these economic downturns,” explained Fong. “The challenges that this generation faces are unique in that ... not only are you facing competition from your own age cohort (and) people who lost their jobs during the recession ... you’re facing competition from a lot of older workers who are now retired.” Though Canada’s baby boom generation has just started to hit 65, many older workers are either returning from or delaying retirement to remain in the workforce. There has even been a “surge” in job creation for older workers postrecession, as 400,000 new jobs overall have been created for workers over 25 since before the recession began. Leanne Ashworth, Co-Ordinator of the Concordia Student Union Housing and Job Bank said many graduates return for help, desperately seeking work. “We ask them, ‘What do you want to do?’ And they’ll say, ‘Anything.’” To Iris Unger, these dismal numbers also echo what she sees as Executive Director of Youth Employment Services (YES), a career and business resource centre in Montreal. “There’s a lot of young people out of work, and we’re seeing a lot more of them at the Centre,” said Unger, who added that pressure to find a job post-graduation from family and friends can take a mental toll on job seekers. “We’re seeing a big increase in young people getting stressed about the employment situation.” Recently, the federal government slashed $6.5 million in funding for youth summer job programs, closing down job centres and moving many resources online. The office of Human Resources Minister Diane Finley defended the decision, saying that young people they surveyed said they were seeking out information online rather than at centres. Unger criticized this justification, saying that the government should have also consulted resources like YES, and not just students. Hunting online for jobs is not a sure-fire way to get hired, she said. And it will likely take a few more years before the labour mar- ket re-balances itself. Past studies have shown that it can take up to 10 years for young workers to regain their footing in the economy after a recession, according to Fong. And those who graduate in a recession stand to earn less income, a gap that only closes several years on. Overall, “it’s not easy for young people to make it these days,” Fong conceded. So what does a young person with a newly-minted diploma do? Having a online resume, like a LinkedIn account, is a good call, but don’t job hunt exclusively online. Instead of emailing out dozens of faceless CVs, make yourself known to potential employers by using “hidden con- nections” like networking, volunteering and internships. “People need to be trying as many different things as possible and having face-to-face connections with employers instead of just firing things off on the Internet and never talking to someone,” Ashworth explained. “The main way to get a job is through networking, which means getting out of the house,” Unger agreed. One option is to offer to volunteer a few hours a week to get your foot in the door and gain experience, while supporting yourself at another job. Unger added that it’s also crucial to find a supportive network of family and friends so you don’t sink into a funk. And if you don’t find your dream job straight out of school? The report warns that not finding work after graduation “erodes a graduate’s skills and competitive edge,” and can lead to people taking “lesser” jobs, taking a hit to their income over the years. Sometimes it’s okay to settle for what you can get, according to Ashworth, but it’s also important to keep your eye on the prize. “Find a survival job, keep your spirits up and try to focus on the long-term search as well,” said Ashworth. “Don’t feel like you’re stuck there forever, but get your needs met first.” 29 $ave big 95 $ * For just $29.95, walk in with your taxes, walk out with your refund. Dear Editor: I’m writing this email because a friend affiliated with Fanshawe College suggested I do so. Up until now, I have seriously been considering Fanshawe as my primary college of choice for future studies. The media programs and the overall student community attracted my eyes to the school, however, I do not want to be part of a community that takes part in drunken riots, burning valuable objects, and even setting vehicles aflame. I am hoping that this letter reaches the people involved and affected, because I have been completely disgusted with not only recent, but past issues that continue to happen. Maybe this will get tossed aside as something that has already been discovered, but I hope not. It is not action against the students I hope to accomplish with this letter, I want the entire Fanshawe population to be aware that if an outside prospective student has second thoughts about applying due to these incidents, how many others have those second thoughts as well? It would be my hope that if students were aware about the effect their actions have on the outside world, they would be less likely to take part in these events. To the students who celebrated St. Patrick’s respectfully and safely – and I’m sure there are many – be proud of yourselves. To those who took part in the appalling events of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, you should be ashamed of yourselves. You’re trashing the reputation of a good school and potentially throwing your futures away. You’re at Fanshawe College to make a future for yourself, not to possibly be arrested and find yourself in jail. If you have a criminal record, it’s not going to matter what type of degree, diploma or certificate you have. The fact that the London Police Chief had to make a news conference to put the city at ease because of the actions of students is saddening, and it is very unfortunate that events like this influence future students’ decisions on which schools to apply to. Hopefully there is a proactive response to these events, and I for one hope to see a change in this student party mentality. After all that I have heard, I’m not so sure Fanshawe is the right choice anymore, and I hope that current student awareness of possible students not looking at Fanshawe because of these situations is enough to make them change their behavior when celebrating holidays. Josh Walter Possible future student Mayor threatens students? Dear Editor: Maybe a drunken bonfire in the street was way out of line, but the Mayor’s threats were worse and I believe illegal. He said, and I quote, “You will pay one way or another.” If he had said that you will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, that would be proper. But he has made an open threat to the students and I think he should be challenged on his comments. P. Castiglione L is for Fanshawe’s rioting students Dear Editor: To the Goons and Goonettes that took part in the riot, scorn and disgust are the most printable feelings I have for you. Don’t come back to our school. You’re not smart enough to make the shape of an “L” on your foreheads. Susie Mah Law Clerk program Fanshawe College Dear Editor: Fanshawe students are aghast with the events on Fleming Drive, and are quick to say “that’s just an isolated group” and it has nothing to do with the general population of Fanshawe students. However, it seems to be one more story in an ongoing battle of entitlement with this generation. I ride one of the major bus routes that has Fanshawe College as its final destination. Every morning, I encounter the same things, so a few pointers for you: The space beside you is not designed to be just a holder for your knapsack; it is another seat. Move your bag so the person standing up can have a seat The stickers at the front of the bus are there for a reason. If someone who is mobility challenged, elderly, etc., give up your seat. Stop looking away with the hopes that the person will magically disappear. Headphones work. Use them. Respect those sitting around you. Cranking the volume so that the entire bus hears what you are listening too ... really? While the incident on Fleming Drive is an extreme and abhorrent situation unfortunately, Fanshawe students seem to show their lack of respect on a daily basis. R. Craige City needs to accept Fleming responsibility Dear Editor: Fleming Drive and its surrounding streets are part of a London subdivision, serviced by the City of London for snow plowing, garbage collection and all the services that other areas of London get based on their taxes. It’s time there was some introspection by the City. It was in fact the City that allowed that land to be zoned for residential use some 15 to 20 years ago. A little foresight then would have revealed that a residential subdivision, a minute’s walk from the campus, would have had the potential to become a haven for student living. Instead, we will get the usual bluster from City officials, they’ll ask Fanshawe for solutions while offering none of their own. More policing isn’t the answer. A change of zoning bylaws or placing limits on the amount of renters in any single dwelling should be reexamined. Hopefully when the City begins development of the Highbury - Oxford St. property they don’t give developers carte blanche or we may have another student ghetto 20 years down the road. T. And yes, I’m being sarcastic here. Riots, burning couches, overturned news vans? Come on, people, there has got to be a limit. I hope the people responsible realize that innocent Londoners will be paying for all the damage they caused on their idea of a joyous occasion. I’m not going to be a hypocrite here, I love my beer. Then again, I believe in moderation. You know your limit; you know how much you can handle before you go overboard. It is 1:15 a.m. in the early hours of March 18 as I write this and I can still hear sirens blaring – I live five minutes from Fleming Drive and Fanshawe College. Students have got to remember that for most of them, it’s not their town; they are merely living here for a couple of years. There are people who will live their entire lives in London, and negative press coverage isn’t something that anyone would want their hometown to be associated with. I know I wouldn’t want my hometown to ever face negative press. Remember when Mayor Joe Fontana released that song “London is the City of Opportunity”? You do? But is this the ‘opportunity’ you want? To bring disrespect to the Forest City? To show people how many cars you can destroy? How many kegs of beer you can chug? I hardly think so. If I were Irish or had Irish roots, I would proba- bly be so mad right now! How dare you ruin a day that brings about the Irishman inside everyone? Sure, everyone has the right to gather freely and say whatever they want, whenever they want. That is basic freedom. But freedom to wantonly destroy property? Blasphemy, I tell you, blasphemy. Being a student of journalism, a part of me wanted to step out with my equipment and cover the event – nay, the debacle, I should say. The other part of me feared for my own safety. I know this is nothing compared to being a journalist in the Middle East where your life can be in danger every minute of every day, but to risk my life at the hands of a thousand rioting teenagers and young adults? That would be something quite pointless, in my opinion. So now when people ask what Fanshawe is famous for, what do we tell them? Riots? Parties? Angry teenagers? Or do we tell them that Fanshawe is a haven of learning? A place of wit and wisdom? A place of dignity and consideration? I always knew that I would face a culture shock when I moved across the world. India and Canada are completely different when it comes to customs and behaviours, but not once have I heard of a drunken college riot during 18 years in India. I’ve already heard about two in London itself, and you’ve got to remember that London is nothing compared to a vast majority of Indian cities when it comes to student populations. So, in conclusion, if you’re one of the rioters who thought it was ‘cool’ and ‘trendy’ to fill yourself up with alcohol and then go berserk, you should probably look at yourself and feel sorry. Step forward and admit your wrongdoing if you didn’t face the consequences for what you did that night. Do not let innocent people who had no part to play face trouble for what you did. Do your bit to make this city a better place to live in. Do your bit for the community. Do your bit for the college; but more importantly, do your bit for yourself. Volume 44 Issue No. 26 March 26, 2012 www.fsu.ca/interrobang/ OPINION LETTERS TO THE EDITOR fsuletters@fanshawec.ca 7 The best laid plans… PSYCH YOUR MIND ROSE CORA PERRY www.rosecoraperry.com When it comes to developing (and maintaining) psychological maturity, a key ingredient to success is cultivating a sunny disposition. As the words to the theme of Monty Python’s The Life of Brian so smartly prescribe, one should always strive to “look on the bright side of life.” With that said, however, equally important is establishing a realistic perception: both of the external world AND when it comes to yourself and your own capabilities. In other words, don’t bite off more than you can chew and know your limitations. While this sounds like commonsense advice that wouldn’t require much brain power to follow, if you start to take a tally of your own experiences, you may be surprised by just how many times you’ve succumbed to what social psychologists term “the planning fallacy.” As Kahneman and Tversky explain in their 1979 journal article, “Intuitive Predictions: Biases and Corrective Procedures,” “the planning fallacy is the tendency of individuals to underestimate the duration that is needed to complete most tasks.” Its root causes? 1. The OVERestimation of one’s abilities 2. Focalism: the belief that one’s current task is unique; something that results in a failure to reflect upon past experiences of a similar nature in which there were negative outcomes 3. The failure to consider plausible complications and obstacles And finally… 4. The conceptualization of the task as one complete activity, rather than acknowledging finalization requires the completion of a series of necessary milestones As I believe is fairly self-evident, all of the above factors can be attributed to egoism. Humans, because of our natural desire to confirm POSITIVE beliefs about ourselves and therefore maintain a positive self-image, are EXTREMELY biased when it comes to personal evaluation. When a new responsibility is attributed to us, the average mentally healthy individual will accept the task with the belief they will accomplish it easily and quickly, without facing any “jams in the machine.” If the task is associated with a sense of power and/or prestige, our perceptual bias will be even more pronounced because we all want to be able to see ourselves as possessing both characteristics as they make us more “valuable” from an “evolutionary fitness” stance. On the same token, then, it’s no surprise that also due to evolutionary impulses (specifically to avoid danger), we judge the actions and abilities of others SEVERELY and have a tendency to focus on things that would confirm NEGATIVE beliefs about them. This is particularly true if we perceive an individual(s) as a threat to our security, romantic life or cultural belief system… ergo racism! Like all things in life, the trick is finding balance. Being confident and holding positive beliefs about oneself and one’s abilities is a GOOD thing. Being cocky and unwilling to own up to your deficits, however, is NOT (ironically, cockiness is typically rooted in insecurity but that’s a whole other can of worms). Assessing situations positively too is something we should strive for, but NOT to the extent that you become an eternal optimist/idealist who is unable to evaluate things realistically in terms of the “what if” scenarios. If life has taught me anything, it’s that you can ultimately NEVER plan enough… or plan for the unexpected. In two words, shit happens. While we cannot always control that which occurs around us, ongoing personal disappointment can be at least minimized if one is willing to practice introspection. Here, an example from my personal life yet again proves illustrative: For the past couple of years, I’ve juggled multiple part-time employment schedules in order to earn enough to both get by and be able to save up for the future. While this may sound like a nightmare scenario to many, believe it or not, doing so has actually afforded me more free time to be able to devote to things I’m truly passionate about such as fulfilling my creative impulses and “keeping house.” I was recently offered and accepted (foolishly and regrettably) a full-time nine-to-five type position. Within moments of doing so, I took ill and became overwhelmed not because of the difficulty of the job, but rather CREDIT: BZUPAGES.NET because getting up at 6 a.m. meant I had to go to bed by 8:30 p.m. (at the latest) and going to bed at 8:30 p.m. meant I no longer had the time nor energy to exercise, cook nice dinners for myself and my spouse, or even clean my house. It didn’t help of course that I was devoting 35 hours a week to something that was sold to me as a “dream job/career opportunity” but turned out to be nothing more than monkey work… but we’ll leave that as a sidebar. Suffice it to say that while the position paid well, I was utterly miserable and felt as though any semblance of a life I previously had had gone by the wayside. Obviously, this was a pretty major disappointment for me in all regards. It meant that I had given up one of my part-time roles that I truly enjoyed for nothing and it surely didn’t help that I got reamed out by the Head of HR for quitting. On a positive note, however, this experience reaffirmed something important about myself: where my priorities truly lie and the kind of lifestyle that works best for me as a result. Had I practiced introspection and honestly evaluated everything prior to taking on the role, this whole song and dance could have been avoided, but, my dears, there’s no use Graham James case sickening MIKE DAVIES THE OMEGA KAMLOOPS, B.C. (CUP) — On March 20, Graham James was sentenced for his guilty plea — filed in December — for numerous and repeated sexual assaults against children. I will repeat this, just so there’s no confusion about the actual facts. James pleaded guilty to numerous and repeated sexual assaults against children. Still reading? Not disgusted enough yet? I’ll try harder — not that I’ll have to. He received a sentence of two years per victim, to be served concurrently, and his name and DNA will be added to the national sex-offender database. Todd Holt, one of James’ victims, spoke at a press conference after the sentencing hearing, bravely fighting back tears and answering questions from those gathered. “My life can go on today,” he said, acknowledging that, “I don’t think there’s a sentence out there that’s suitable for this type of abuse, for any type of abuse.” He is attempting to be done with anger, although when asked about his feelings regarding James’ rehabilitation, he replied, “I believe in my heart that Graham James will offend again,” and referred a point in the hearing when James’ made the admission that “he still prefers young men.” It's a long-standing preference: James pleaded guilty in 2007 to sexually assaulting a child and was sentenced to three-and-ahalf years in jail. While serving that sentence, he was charged and pleaded guilty to another sexual assault on a 14-year-old boy, which occurred in 1971. The sentence for that charge? Six months — to be served concurrently with his previous sentence. He was released after serving a total of 18 months and issued a lifetime ban from coaching in Canada by the Canadian Hockey Association. Are you revolted because James was these children’s hockey coach, in parts of Canada where hockey is very seriously considered a way out, and these children’s hopes and dreams for the future were tied directly to the sport in which James was their leader, mentor and role model? Are you appalled that he served a mere 18 months in jail for sexually abusing children? Or are you disgusted because so much time passed between the atrocities and the public being made aware of them? Do you suspect many other deplorable things may have happened over the years — things that no one besides the victims will ever know about? There was at least one. An anonymous victim filed a civil lawsuit against James in 2003, and the case was settled out of court. Oh, by the way: upon being released from prison in 2000 after serving 18 months of his sentence for raping children, since he couldn’t coach hockey in Canada, he went to Spain. He continued to coach young boys, including the country’s national team. In 2007, James applied for and was granted a pardon by the National Parole Board of Canada. Go ahead and read that last line again. I’ll wait. This pardon was not disclosed to the media or the public. It prompted outrage and parole reform when it came to light years later. Even so, on March 19, the day before James’s sentence was handed down, the Canadian Press published an article that opened with the following: “A Manitoba judge says allowing cameras to broadcast the sentencing of disgraced former hockey coach Graham James for sexual abuse would turn the highly charged case into a spectacle and could violate the sex offender’s privacy.” Oh, thank you, Judge Catherine Carlson! We’d hate to have this man’s privacy violated, wouldn’t we? If you’ll all excuse me now, I have to go get this taste out of my mouth. I hope you do, too. in crying over spilled milk. The moral of the story? Even perfectionists, such as myself, have to be willing to admit defeat upon occasion. To protect you VICTOR DE JONG INTERROBANG The death of farming: Should we care? NOTES FROM DAY SEVEN MICHAEL VEENEMA veenema.m@gmail.com One of my nephews is in his late teens. He always wanted to take over his parents’ farm. And his parents once looked forward to the day they could hand over a well-managed family farm to their child. Too bad that’s not going to happen. The farm, about 100 acres, near the town of Drayton, Ontario, was a mixed farm. What I remember seeing there is chickens, hogs, some dairy, and in the fields, hay and soybeans. In later years the family also farmed sheep. Once I came over on a hot summer day to help with the haying. That meant stacking bales of hay on a moving wagon. It’s back-breaking work, really, but in its own way, fun. And when the day was over, it felt good. Today, the family lives in a large house about 10 kilometres from the farm. They don’t own it anymore. My nephew’s father had a hard time finding other work but now is with a farm equipment company, and his mother works at a local feed mill, dispatching trucks of cattle feed to the farms of the region, likely including the farm they once owned. What is the main reason for the crash of my nephew’s dream of farming? Look no further than the mirror. We consumers want cheaper and cheaper food and more of it. How do we at the same time increase the food production of farms and drive down the cost? Industrialize the farm. Make farms part of the globalized economy. Farms get bigger. The number of people on them declines while the machines on them grow in number and size. Before World War II, one in three Canadians lived on a farm. According to Statistics Canada, in 2008 that number was one in 46. As one article in the Regina Leader-Post said, it’s all about economies of scale. More goods produced per person-hour. So, it’s all good. Our food is cheap. And we have lots. My nephew will get a job as a plumber or mutual fund advisor. His parents will retire one day in a decent house. Everyone is happy. What’s not to like? According to Wendell Berry, plenty. We lament the closing of plants when they leave town. But the closing of family farms should be of much greater concern. Why should we regard the death of the family farm as a catastrophe? In his 2009 book, Bringing It to the Table, Berry tells us. First, there is the environmental cost. As more and more farmers grow fewer and fewer crop varieties, they depend increasingly on chemicals to resupply the soil with the nutrients that would otherwise be supplied by crop rotation. Besides that, much farmland in North America is dedicated to only one crop, which means that for a significant part of each year there is nothing growing on the land. The result is that the rate of soil erosion has risen greatly, plugging up natural waterways with sediment. Second, there is the human cost. In the socalled developed world, very few of us can take satisfaction from knowing that we are CREDIT: FLYFFWORLD.COM supporting our local farmers, workers and community organizations. The industrialization of farming means that farmers are pitted against each other in a quiet but lethal Darwinian game of get bigger or die. Eat or be eaten in the global economy. Kill or be killed. As for supporting local businesses, especially the local farm, I will bet a cup of (fair trade) coffee that few of us care much if our grapes come from California or Niagaraon-the-Lake or if the hamburger in our Big Mac comes from Australia or St. Jacobs. Just like Europeans used to tell native North Americans to become like them or die, today the developed world tells all agrarian communities to industrialize or perish. Globalized industrialization grows more powerful daily, and it is the most dangerous movement human beings have ever hatched. And while the family farm is not its only victim, it is an important one. Last week I promised to draw on Berry’s appreciation of Amish farming communities and the hope such communities may have built into them. I see, though, that the end of the column is here. So, next week. It’s an unfortunate reality in politics that leaders say one thing and do another. In his 2003 campaign, Dalton McGuinty locked eyes with Ontarians and promised not to raise taxes. A short time later, the annual health tax was introduced. The situation seems blatantly obvious: McGuinty is a liar like every politician and there’s no point in listening to what they say. Wrong. Unfortunately, we are the problem. It was just a few weeks ago that, London City Council passed the city budget which cut $1 million per year from London’s affordable housing fund, reduced funding for the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and diverted funds from the strategic reserves. All of these actions were so the City could meet Joe Fontana’s promise of a zero per cent tax increase. Now, on one hand, it’s admirable that a politician followed through on a promise, but what is it really going to cost in the long run? CTV News reported that by cutting the aforementioned services, the average household was saving just $7 per year. London residents voted in a candidate based partly on his promise to freeze taxes and that’s extremely unrealistic. There’s no doubt that if it were possible, people would vote for a freeze on the price of gas at, say, $1 per litre. However, if the freeze were over a period of five years, more and more resources would need to be diverted from other services to make up the deficit created by the freeze. If London taxpayers really wanted to have their taxes lowered at the cost of services, I’m sure a candidate would arise proposing a 10 per cent slash in property taxes and the elimination of garbage pickup. The taxation model shapes a society. Its goal is to provide a maximum number of public resources at the lowest possible cost, which is divided up amongst the populace. The inherent struggle is to keep these services as efficient as possible in order to provide taxpayers with the maximum return on their investment. By cutting something like the Affordable Housing Reserve Fund, members of the community lose a resource that was put in place to support them in the event of a crisis. A person living on the street is far more susceptible to colds, pneumonia and heat stroke, and thousands of taxpayer dollars are spent treating these preventable conditions. The bottom line is that by making a zero per cent tax increase the top priority, we lose sight of what our actual priorities should be. Fontana was acting on behalf of his constituency by pushing for these cuts, yet at the same time you’d be hard-pressed to find someone in London who is against providing funding for affordable housing and the physically impaired, particularly when the annual price tag is less than $10 per household. If you’re looking for somewhere to live that doesn’t raise taxes, you can start by looking for the highest poverty rates. Congrats to new council Dear Editor: Lost in the flaming Fleming debacle is the fact that a new student council was elected to serve the student body. Their moment of triumph was short lived, hijacked by an event of silly proportions. Unfortunately for these new leaders, it looks like they’ll be dealing with this mess instead of other issues. S. Frings LIFESTYLES Volume 44 Issue No. 26 March 26, 2012 www.fsu.ca/interrobang/ 9 The British Columbians invade London March 30 MADISON FOSTER INTERROBANG It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that The British Columbians are from the province of the same name, although the band, hailing from Vancouver, claims their choice of name isn’t necessarily in honour of their home province but is just them following the example of bands such as Chicago and Boston. The band kicked off their Ontario tour on March 30 to celebrate the release of their second album Made For Darker Things which came out in September of last year. The British Columbians’ final tour date will bring them to London on March 30 before heading back out west to start preparing for their summer schedule including dates at a few different festivals. When drummer and guitarist Dave Moran emailed me, I took the chance to ask him a few questions about the tour and about what’s next for the band. So Dave, you’ve started an Ontario tour on March 20 with London being its last stop. Anything you hope to do while in London? “The band actually has a lot of family and friends in and around Ontario and specifically in London, so we’re really looking forward to being able to see their shining faces for at least a few hours when we get into town. London is a great city and we just love spending any time we can here.” During your tour you’re playing with a number of different bands including Amos the Transparent, Baby Eagle and the Proud Mothers and The Coppertones. Anyone that you’re excited to play with, whether you’ve played with them before or are looking forward to meeting? “We’re really excited to be playing with all of the bands that we’ve been paired up with on this tour. Everyone you mentioned is making great music and it’s really nice to be able to share the stage with them.” So you guys released your new album Made For Darker Things back in September. What are your plans now that the album is out and the tour is starting? Any plans for the next album? “There are lots of new songs in early stages right now that we’ve just put on hold while we prepped for this tour, but we’ll be back at it once we’re home, continuing to demo the new stuff. With the lineup we have in the band right now, there never seems to be a lack of song ideas from anybody, so we’re really looking forward to seeing how it all fleshes out once we start really digging into them.” Since this is your second release, what did you do differently from the first album? “This album was much more of a ‘live off the floor’ recording than the first one. Everyone sat in one room, mic’d up and we played it live to tape. Of course there are always overdubs afterwards, but we really wanted to make sure this album captured more of what the band does live in concert. From the responses we’ve had, I think we at least came close to achieving that goal on this record.” Your sound is described as having an older blues influence. Did you grow up listening to a lot of blues music? Would you list any blues musicians as influ- CREDIT: RURAL RECORDS The British Columbians play APK Live on March 30. ences? “Our singer/guitarist, Girard (Knox) grew up listening to a lot of the old Mississippi blues men; guys like Fred McDowell, Blind Blake and Son House. He got completely immersed and obsessed with that part of the world and the music that had come from it. Of course, as time goes on I think musicians typically all start to explore different types of music – some of which influences your writing and some of which doesn’t (hopefully). Luckily, this oldschool blues music is one of the threads that finds its way into our music, and when it mixes around in the pot that has become this band, it somehow manages to give the songs some of the depth and movement that they really seem to want and need. “ The British Columbians will be in London on March 30 for their show along side their friends from Baby Eagle and the Proud Mothers, fronted by ex-member of Constantines Steven Lambke, Marine Dreams (Ian Kehoe of Attack and Black) and Fanshawe student Evan Redsky. The show, put on by We Kill Giants (MIA’s Jeremy Klaver) at APK Live, will act as the CD release of Babys Eagles’ album Bone Soldiers on You’ve Changed Records. The Friday show at 340 Wellington Rd. will be 19-plus and $7 at the door. Social summer ahead a BOBBYISMS BOBBY FOLEY I write about random things a lot. I write a lot about random things. Did you know the Koopalings – that is, the seven eldest children of King Bowser Koopa and heirs to the Koopa Kingdom – were all named after singers and musicians? With the exception of Larry (actually named after TV talk show host Larry King), the Koopalings are named after icons like Iggy Pop, Lemmy, Roy Orbison and Beethoven. Those artists may all seem somewhat dated, but keep in mind that the Koopalings made their debut in Super Mario Bros. 3 in the late 1980s. The distance between artists and fans has all but disappeared now when you compare it to the amount of privacy celebrities enjoyed in generations past. Nowadays, oldworld celebrities and rock stars seek out coaches into this world of social media and Internet connectivity, eager to engage their fans and ensure their own relevance into the future. This isn’t some other article about how valuable social media can be, but rather a personal testi- mony to the sorts of rewards you can have by participating. Three years ago, Twitter was still that thing that everyone heard of but no one used except for weirdos and people who take pictures of their food. Now, radio stations like FM96 and More 103.9 FM use it on a daily basis to share concert announcements, local news and more. Last year, the John Labatt Centre in London began a Twitter campaign that selected local fans and concert-goers to attend concerts for free in exchange for their reviews – the #JLCReviewer campaign has given a unique concert experience to some high-profile events to some lucky people who connect with them online. If you’re a real music fan, someone who values that rhythm and energy enough to go to the effort of changing the channel on your car radio, you’ve got the effort it takes to make yourself aware of new music and news happening near you. Concert venues and promoters go to great lengths to work across networks to ensure that their events get noticed; the only trick is in not closing your eyes to it. Last week brought us the first day of spring, and the end of the semester is only a few weeks away. Music is sure to play a huge role in all the adventures this coming summer, and now that SXSW in Austin and CMW in Toronto have officially kicked off the music festival season, there is no better time than right now to start discovering new artists and sounds to carry you through the warm nights ahead. Go at your own pace, but don’t be afraid to try something new. In fact, here are three websites you could visit right now to get a start in discovering new music: Twitter: Obvious, I know, but chances are your favourite artists have accounts and are posting photos and anecdotes that may interest you a lot. Unlike in the 1980s, many artists today have embraced social media and the kind of close bond they can form with their fans. Spinner.ca: AOL’s online music blog here in Canada, Spinner provides the latest in artist news and perspectives, and they feature daily free song downloads and an online listening section with new albums streaming in their entirety every week. Hypem.com: If you’re the type of music fan that just wants something new in the background, the Hype Machine is for you. A music blog aggregator above many others, it seeks out and tracks what is popular on music blogs and sites around the world. If you’ve already taken your first steps into social media or visit those sites and you’re ready to explore a little further, consider looking into Twitter hashtags. Hashtags are unpunctuated words that begin with a # and mark a tweet as pertaining to a specific topic or conversation. I only bring this up because now that festival season is beginning, more artists, promoters, venues and websites are going to be tweeting than you can imagine – searching and exploring a hashtag like #NXNE will reveal to you what people are saying about the festival, even months before it begins. For even more advanced ways of unlocking the power of social media as it pertains to the music industry, check out Brian Thompson’s site at thornybleeder.com. Between his podcasts and daily newsletters, he’s become a leading voice in ways to integrate music and media like Facebook, Tumblr and more, particularly for artists and entrepreneurs. Let’s face it, the warmth and sunshine outside is making everyone eager to celebrate, so open yourself up to new sounds soon – music sounds better in the summer anyway. Zachary Lucky proves his love for Saskatchewan with new record MADISON FOSTER INTERROBANG It’s not hard to find inspiration from the places you know and love. That’s just what Saskatoon native Zachary Lucky has done with his newest album, conveniently titled Saskatchewan. The folk album released independently on March 6 of this year easily proves Lucky to be a good old fashioned prairie boy. Although some may not be fond of the title, the musician wears it with pride and makes it an honour with songs written about and for the prairie province. The eighttrack album written by Lucky – with the exception on the last track, “Saskatchewan (Elenor’s),” by his sister Elenor Lucky – was surprisingly not recorded in the titled home province of the musician but in Grandview, Manitoba with close friend Sean CraibPetkau (also known as the Bravest Ghost) back in November of last year. The LP also features a number of musicians and friends – including Lucky’s girlfriend, Carly Maicher on backup vocals and piano – who complement his guitar and all add an extra something to the mixture. Saskatchewan is the second fulllength release for the young folk singer and songwriter. Now at 22, Lucky continues to produce a quality folk sound since his first EP release from before he was even 20 years old. Over the years he never fails to please lovers of the genre, and once again he has released an album worthy of any folk fan’s collection. It’s clear to see that Lucky draws his inspirations not only from his home but from other folk musicians such as Townes Van Zandt with his gentle twang and acoustic guitar melodies – acoustic because anything louder would take away from the beautiful lyrics and poetry created by Lucky, such as those in the title track, which is in a way a love ballad about being away from and missing the place he lives. The only complaint I have about this album is that the docile nature and gentle tunes of the album are not ones to be enjoyed at all times. These are songs that would fit well on a playlist you would make to put you to sleep, as they could possibly be substituted for lullabies. That is not at all a bad thing if you’re in the right state to enjoy the music produced on the record. Once in that state, these eight tracks make for some perfect easy and light listening and Saskatchewan makes the perfect record for all those who love folk. Even though Zachary Lucky is currently on a cross-Canada tour throughout March, April and May in honour of the release, we hope it’s not long until he is back to work creating music. Until then, the full-length album Saskatchewan can be streamed or downloaded on Lucky’s bandcamp at zacharylucky.bandcamp.com. After two independent albums in 2006 and 2009, his hard work finally paid off in 2011 when he released Rolling Papers with Atlantic Records that featured the hit single “Black and Yellow,” which dominated the airwaves. In 2012, Wiz Khalifa looks to build off of his momentum as he prepares to release his second major studio album, O.N.I.F.C., by teasing fans with a mixtape. Taylor Allderdice, named after his hometown high school, contains 17 smooth tracks produced almost entirely by underground producers, that stay true to his style and that Khalifa fans will find incredibly satisfying. “Never Been (Part II)” features Rick Ross and Amber Rose, newly engaged to Khalifa. The track is produced by Sledgren, who lays the foundation perfectly for Khalifa to exploit the lyrical talent that brought him to mainstream success, and it has a sick rap beat. Every bar is on point, and his flow never ceases to impress. Ross spits his usual fire, which is becoming more and more common when he’s included as a featured artist. He always sounds better as a guest than he does on his own records. Rose plays a small part in the song, CREDIT: MOVIESPAD.COM Wiz Khalifa is set to release his second major studio record this year. singing merely a couple lines in the chorus, but it is a nice touch. “Nameless” includes Chevy Woods and represents perfectly in three minutes and 24 seconds the record’s chill vibe. The song, produced by Dope Couture, is highlighted by a simplistic boom-bap beat, which blends perfectly with the two rappers’ smooth lyrical flow. The track is my favourite song on the mixtape. “O.N.I.F.C.” is named after his soon-to-be released studio record, One Night In First Class. The track is produced by Cardo and Sledgren, and the beat is the essence of heaven reincarnated in song. The beat contains hints of hip-hop but primarily boasts an almost trance or electronic sound, and it sounds incredible. Khalifa takes a step back from spitting bars in this one, simply talking about how rich he is, but that’s okay. The beat is meant to serve as a break from pure rap in the mixtape, and isn’t intended to be ruined by usual lyrical intensity. I honestly hope Khalifa uses these two producers in his new album. Honourable mentions: every other song on the mixtape. Usually when rappers release mixtapes, they are used as experiments to delve into waters not previously tread. Taylor Allderdice is an excellent mixtape where Wiz Khalifa stays within himself. The production is bang on and holds true to Khalifa’s smooth, chill style and complements his lyrical flow. The mixtape is an absolute mustlisten for fans, and hopefully the new album will build off of it. You can download the mixtape for free at taylorallderdicemixtape.com. LIFESTYLES Volume 44 Issue No. 26 March 26, 2012 www.fsu.ca/interrobang/ 11 Friends with Kids a grown-up comedy REEL VIEWS ALISON MCGEE a_mcgee3@fanshaweonline.ca Friends with Kids (2011) CREDIT: RECOIL Stone Cold battles Machete in dream matchup Cinema Connoisseur ALLEN GAYNOR www.cinemaconn.com Recoil (2011) Has there ever been two actors who you really wanted to see make a film together, like Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, or Ron Jeremy and Jenna Jameson? I bet when they finally did work together, it just resulted in a mess… quite literally, in the case of Jeremy and Jameson. Well, two performers that I have wanted to see work together, Steve Austin and Danny Trejo, team up in the recently released on home video film Recoil. I am happy to say they did not disappoint. Ryan Varrett (Austin) is a former police officer who becomes a vigilante after his family is gunned down at his son’s birthday party. If you thought that year when your parents hired a clown for your birthday bash was bad, consider yourself lucky. Varett’s mission brings him to a little town called Hope, which, despite the pleasantsounding name, is not a nice place to inhabit. Police officers are assaulted, arson runs rampant, and there is little to no regard for personal property. Thank God I live in London, Ontario and not in a place like that. Varrett takes up residence in a hotel operated by Darcy (Serinda Swan), a woman whose husband was murdered by a local gang of bikers who run the town. Darcy and the rest of the town folk have been living in fear of the gang and specifically their leader Drayke (Trejo), and have avoided rocking the boat. Varrett, however, has a mission: take out the members of the gang responsible for his family’s demise, and anyone who stands in his way. This results in plenty of action, particularly in the final showdown between Varrett and Drayke, who toss the guns aside and exchange good old fashioned fisticuffs. Steve Austin is, of course, best known for his exploits in the WWE, but he is carving out quite a career for himself. While he was featured in the big budget 2010 film The Expendables, he has mostly been starring in modest budget action films such as Damage, Hunt To Kill and The Stranger. Austin has stated time and time again that he is starting out from square one in his new profession, and he is eager to learn and improve – and that he has, each time out. Recoil is his finest work to date. If he keeps working at it, he could soon be beating up the likes of George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Christopher Plummer. While Austin was known as the toughest S.O.B. during his wrestling career, Danny Trejo could likely contest that claim. He is a former boxing champion... a prison boxing champion. Trejo spent 11 years in the can before changing his ways and going on to star in approximately 820,000 films and TV shows over the past three decades. Seriously, think of a film or show, and he was in it: Baywatch, Modern Family, Young and the Restless, Spy Kids, Heat, From Dusk Till Dawn, I could go on and on. I think he even played a brontosaurus in Jurassic Park. If I attempted to print off his list of credits on IMDB, I’d be responsible for killing a dozen trees. Trejo is best known for his work as the title character in Machete, one of the most enjoyable films of the past decade. Trejo is just as badass in Recoil as he was in Machete, though this time you’ll find yourself rooting against him… at least I hope you will, since he’s a murderous drug dealer. There are no complicated plot twists in Recoil – it is simply about a man, and really a whole town, who have had their world turned upside down, so they decide to get revenge on those responsible. In this case, revenge is a dish best served Stone Cold. Remember how funny Bridesmaids was? If you loved the movie because of the hilariously dynamic chemistry between Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Chris O’Dowd on screen, Director/leading lady Jennifer Westfeldt has just the film for you: Friends with Kids. The story revolves around Jason and Julie, two friends who conceive of a plan to have a child together but share no romantic relationship. Essentially the plan boils down to Jason and Julie raising a child as two single parents so that each may be free to delve into romance when it comes along. Along with Jason and Julie for this crazy ride are their coupled-up friends Ben, Missy, Leslie and Alex. Admittedly the plot of Friends with Kids seems a little over-done and predictable, however the ensemble cast of comedic heavy-hitters easily distracts the audience from any tiredness in the story. Taking on one of the lead roles as Julie is the film’s Director, Jennifer Westfeldt. While the combination of acting/directing can often times spell disaster for the final product of the film, Westfeldt CREDIT: ROADHOUSE ATTRACTIONS Adam Scott and Jennifer Westfeldt star in Friends with Kids. seems to have found the balance needed to get both jobs done well. By Westfeldt’s side as platonic friend and baby daddy Jason is Adam Scott, that quiet but funny actor whose work credits include Parks and Recreation and Party Down. Able to hold his own outside the world of television, Scott proves he can be funny on screens big and small. Who does irreverent comedy nowadays better than Maya Rudolph? It proves impossible not to laugh out loud at Rudolph’s performance as Leslie as she lights up the screen with her distinct comedic talents. And who better to offset Rudolph’s extroverted comedy than the quiet, shy, yet no less funny Chris O’Dowd? It is O’Dowd’s sly, subtle humour that works so well for his role in this ensemble. Rounding out the couples are Kristen Wiig and Jon Hamm as married pair Ben and Missy. Wiig as always is entertaining in her dis- tinct, unique way. There is something about her presence, from her attitude to her line delivery to her body movements, that always draws attention, not to mention laughs, in Wiig’s direction. Jon Hamm, who plays Missy’s husband Ben, flies largely under the radar for the majority of the film. Sure, his rugged good looks are difficult to ignore, but aside from one dark and emotional outburst, Hamm is more for looking at than listening to. The thing about Friends with Kids is that it’s all about the cast; how they interact with one another, how they play off each other’s riffs, and how they mesh together to create one cohesive comedic gem. The story is nothing new, but the way that the ensemble brings it to life makes it something worth watching. Friends with Kids is definitely worth your time, unless you don’t like to laugh, in which case stay far, far away. Originally a six-part series on YouTube, Redemption is now available on DVD, complete with special features. Redemption tells the story of Tallis (Felicia Day), an Elven assassin, and her quest to track down Saarebas, an escaped mage who unleashes destruction wherever he goes. Redemption takes place at the same time as the video game Dragon Age II. Players can meet up with Tallis in the game by purchasing the Mark of the Assassin DLC. If you’re not familiar with the Dragon Age games, you might feel like you’re tossed right into the middle of an unfamiliar world, but the title cards that introduce each of the six parts will fill you in on what you need to know. Redemption is pretty much what you’d expect when you have Day (The Guild, Dr. Horrible’s SingAlong Blog) writing the script and acting as the main character. She’s sassy, cute and kicks some serious ass. The rest of the characters aren’t as well fleshed out as Tallis, making them fairly one-dimensional. Though the acting occa- CREDIT: FELICIADAY.COM Dragon Age: Redemption was written by Felicia Day, who also plays the main character, Tallis. sionally drifts into wooden or cheesy territory at times, Redemption is fun to watch and the story is compelling. The fight scenes and special effects reminded me of those from mid-’90s shows like Xena: Warrior Princess or Hercules: The Legendary Journeys – a little on the corny side, but pretty impressive considering Redemption’s fairly low budget. Redemption really brought the environments and atmosphere of the Dragon Age games to life. The settings in the show are lush and detailed – maybe even more than the much-lamented environments seen in Dragon Age II. The games and film take place in a fairly typical fantasy world with a few twists: magic is illegal and elves are slaves. Sadly, there are no dragons to be seen – or even men- tioned – in the film. The special features include a few making-of and behind-thescenes shorts that dive into the characters, costumes and crew behind the show. Characters do interviews in full costume and makeup, which is hilarious during Saarebas’ interviews. Be warned, though; the special features have seriously inconsistent sound: the music is deafeningly loud and the interviews are whisper-quiet. The special features also include PDFs of the script, so if you’re a superfan, you can act it out at home. Overall, Redemption is a decent watch. If you enjoy the games, you’ll really like it, and if you haven’t played the games, it might be an entertaining way to spend an hour. Slice of Canadian medical history hits Grand stage ERIKA FAUST INTERROBANG Tempting Providence, now playing at the Grand Theatre in London, tells the story of a nurse caring for people in the tiny towns located along Newfoundland’s Great Northern Peninsula, and it’s a show that’s not to be missed. The play is a look into the little stories that made up the life of Nurse Myra Grimsley, a Canadian medical hero. Grimsley was an Englishwoman sent to Newfoundland in 1921 on a twoyear contract to bring medical aid to the people living in the isolated area. The residents had never before had formal medical care, and with such a small population, everyone knew everyone. When Nurse Myra – referred to simply as “Nurse” throughout the play – arrives, it takes a bit of getting used to for the residents and the nurse herself. The play follows Nurse’s service in Newfoundland, where she extracted 5,000 teeth and delivered 750 babies. It was at her second delivery on the coast where she met the man who would later become her husband, Angus Bennett. At times funny, at other times harrowing, and charming throughout, this true story of the life of Grimsley is one that captivated the audience from start to finish. Tempting Providence tells a story about the transition from feeling lost in a new place to finding that sense of home and comfort, a sense of knowing you’re exactly where you belong. The cast of four people is remarkably talented and a true joy to watch. Deidre Gillard-Rowlings plays the part of the no-nonsense Nurse with true skill – GillardRowlings performed the part for the 500th time on March 18, and that dedication is clear on stage. Her real-life partner Darryl Hopkins captures the spirit of the lovable Angus Bennett. The two are joined on stage by the incredibly versatile Robert Wyatt Thorne and Willow Kean, who both portray a number of different characters. Both are talented performers who make each character unique. The cast works beautifully together, shifting the minimal set into positions to turn the four chairs, table and bed sheet into a ship, a kitchen, a clinic, a carriage. They make you believe that the sheet becomes a lump of bread dough, a piece of clothing, a baby. The set, and the way the characters interact with it, is one of the highlights of the show. If you’re not familiar with Newfoundland accents, it may take you a little while to understand what the characters are saying. The warmth and joy of the Newfoundland spirit is present in each of the cast members. This play is a wonderfully told story of a Canadian medical hero, and it deserved the standing ovation it got the night I saw it. It’s not to be missed, particularly if you’re in Fanshawe’s Nursing program and want to see how your profession can have a real impact on your patients and the community they live in. Tempting Providence runs from now until March 31. For tickets, head to grandtheatre.com or call 519-672-8800. CREDIT: OFFICE SPACE Office Space is one great movie about an awful job. Statistics Canada reported that Canada’s unemployment rate was at 7.5 per cent as of February, and the unemployment rate of people between the ages of 15 and 24 hovers around 14 per cent. In London, the number for that age group is 20.5 per cent. E NCE DIFFE R » KIRSTEN ROSENKRANTZ | INTERROBANG . First impressions are lasting ones, so your resume needs to stand out favourably. Much like writing an advertisement to sell something on eBay, your resume needs to be written effectively to promote your product (YOU) to prospective employers. Highlight your skills, education and abilities as they relate to each job you are applying for, even if it means more work for you in the long run by having to review and rewrite your resume each time. We’ve learned over the years that you can’t please everyone all of the time, and this can be especially true with regards to writing a resume. What constitutes a good resume is often subjective, based on the reader’s experience with reviewing resumes and personal preference. And, while your resume won’t get you a job, it should get you that all-important interview. Here are some general tips for writing your resume: 1. Ensure that your resume is well organized, easy to read, factual, honest and positive. 2. Keep your resume to two pages. Any longer and it becomes work to read it. A one-page resume may not provide enough detail to arouse interest. 3. It should be to the point (you do not have to use complete sentences). Use descriptive verbs to describe your achievements, skills, responsibilities and activities. 4. Proofread and spell-check your resume. It should be errorfree! Getting Started: Start by creating a list of information about you. Many of the following headings will be appropriate. - Name: If you call yourself Tim Scott, great. If you are Timothy Scott, use that. Above all, just be consistent. - Address and Telephone: Make sure all the information about your postal address is correct – don’t forget your postal code. Include all of your phone numbers (land and cellular) as well as the correct area code. - Email Address: Here’s where you may need to reconsider that cutesy email address like bigdaddy@hotmail.com or sexychick21@gmail.com. You may get noticed by employers, but for all the wrong reasons. Be professional and create an email address that has some elements of your name in it. - Education: Start with your most recent education and work backwards. List college/university then high school, with Diplomas or Degrees granted (or year expected), with the cities, provinces, years attended and years of graduation. List any awards you may have received. It may also be useful to an employer if you mention relevant courses that you have completed. - Skills or Qualifications: Summarize the job specific skills you have to demonstrate to the employer. Include the skills that are relevant to the position you are applying for. Transferable skills are subjective, so if you include them, mention where and how you developed them. - Employment History: Again, start with your most recent experience and work backwards. Include employer/company name, with the city, province, the years and months, your job title, a brief description of your duties and responsibilities and mention any special projects or initiatives that you completed. Volunteer Work or Community Service: List the names of organizations you volunteered with, include the years, any elected position you may have held and a brief description of your responsibilities. - Hobbies and Interests/ Memberships: Mention your spare-time activities. Include a list of memberships in professional organizations with their full name rather than just acronyms or abbreviations. - References: Few employers check references prior to an interview, so you aren’t obliged to include references on your resume. Instead, have a separate page with your complete contact information on the top. List only appropriate references and make sure you contact each of them for permission before you list them. Confirm with them the proper spelling of their name, title or position, company, address and telephone number. Following any interview, make sure to call your references to advise that they may be contacted by the employer. Need assistance? Drop by the Career Services office in Room D1063. Facebook: The career maker or breaker REBECCA GRIEB INTERROBANG A trend has been developing in the world of job searching: employers have started asking their applicants to send links to the social media sites they belong to instead of sending their resume and cover letter. As young people immerse themselves more than ever before in social media, information is becoming more readily accessible. Facebook, the network that started it all, is now the prime target for employers to really get to know their job candidates. So what does your Facebook profile say about you? As you prepare to end the school year and apply for jobs, it is important to remember a few things. Here are the top five tips for keeping your Facebook profile job-application friendly: Your photos are not just on Facebook. Once you post a photo on your profile – whether you delete it or not – it will always be on the Internet. If you would like to test the reality of this statement, enter your name into Google – ah hah! There’s that dreaded St. Paddy’s photo! Employers only know so much about you, so that keg stand picture might be the reason you don’t get an interview. Privacy settings only do so much. One thing to keep in mind with Facebook is that the format of their site is constantly changing, which also means the privacy settings are, too. An easy way to be sure your privacy is protected is to not post inappropriate photos or comments in the first place – it’s as simple as that! Set the privacy settings high on your profile regardless – you don’t need people you do not know well knowing everything about you. Last night’s fun outing could be today’s nightmare. Posting inappropriate comments and photos not only makes you appear unprofessional, but if you in any way negatively represent a group or association, you have now given them a bad reputation as well. The Fleming riot is the perfect example – many individuals posted on Facebook how they contributed to the damage done and these people are now getting arrested. Don’t post that on Facebook and, more importantly, don’t do it in the first place. Gone but not forgotten. A hard lesson to learn on Facebook is how to network with your hundreds of “friends,” and as a result, people get deleted and are erased from your profile. Warning: be careful who you delete. Just because that person is not someone you see every day, they may be close with a contact in your professional circle. With that being said, it is unlikely that you have 1,000 friends in real life, so make sure your Facebook profile is an honest reflection of who you know. “Guilty by association” is something to always keep in mind – sometimes your Facebook friends are a direct reflection of the people you hang out with in real life. When you start to apply for jobs, keep in mind that Facebook friending that Fleming rioter could be another strike against your chances at getting an interview. What does your “information” say about you? What you say is just as important as how you say it. Talk about your interests and hobbies, but always be sure to keep it professional. If you are in a sorority, for example, be sure to talk about your role and contributions to your school and society, not just the awesome parties at the frat house next door. Applying for jobs can be stressful, so be sure to eliminate each stressor by starting with your Facebook profile. A simple rule to follow: don’t post anything you wouldn’t want your mother to see. If you are hiding those party pictures and putting your parents on their own privacy setting, maybe they shouldn’t be on Facebook in the first place. Also keep in mind that nowadays many social networking sites connect together, which means that if you have LinkedIn and Facebook connected, your potential employers could be viewing last night’s drinking competition. 24-hour online Mario marathon for charity ROB NICOLAIDIS SPECIAL TO INTERROBANG The Mario marathon is an online charity event hosted by Fanshawe students. The goal is to gain positive awareness for the student body by streaming a video game marathon on the Internet and gaining donations in the process through a PayPal donation box, ultimately raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society. The marathon team and I are very excited to be gaming for such a great cause. The events that took place on Fleming Drive on St. Patrick’s Day were obscene. Only a very small percentage of the Fanshawe student body was involved, so it is quite unreasonable to say it was primarily a Fanshawe-related inci- dent. As Fanshawe students, we are appalled at the events that transpired. We want to make it very clear that this is not an example of student behaviour. You can find out more about the event and the charity at our Facebook page: facebook.com/fanshawecollege2012videogamemarathon. 24 LIFESTYLES Volume 44 Issue No. 26 March 26, 2012 www.fsu.ca/interrobang/ How should I start saving after graduation? TALKING CASH JEREMY WALL Many students here at Fanshawe will be graduating at the end of April. For some of you, this may be after only two or three years of education, and for others, it will be have been much longer. Also, some of you may be fortunate enough to graduate with little to no debt. Others won’t be so fortunate, having accumulated lots of student debt in their pursuit of higher education. Within the next few months, hopefully sooner rather than later, you’ll find yourself employed, hopefully in your field of choice (although that sort of luxury feels rare in today’s job field, particularly in London). It may be your first full-time job, and it may be your first time saving money. There are two things you need to be concerned with at this stage of your financial life: saving money and paying off your debt. If you have little to no debt and find full-time work after graduation, you’re in a great position because you can start saving for the big costs down the line, such as a down payment on a house, a new car and even retirement. When you’re only in your 20s, it seems pretty early to start saving for retirement, but the longer you save, the more your savings compound and the more money you will have in retirement. Your future self will thank you. If you have debt, you have to CREDIT: QUEERMEUP.COM Be aware CREDIT: FINANCIALPOST.COM make a decision to pay down your debt first and start saving later, or to do both at the same time. It depends on what kind of debt and how much you have. Typical advice from a financial planner would have you pay down your credit card debt as quickly as possible, even foregoing saving to do this. Paying down OSAP debt, on the other hand, can probably be balanced with starting to save. Every situation is different. Starting a new job would be a good time to speak with a financial planner for advice tailored to your specific situation. Many companies have retirement savings plans, such as RRSP matching, pension plans and stock options. You should look into these. Retirement savings plans come in many shapes and sizes and not all are created equal, but any benefits offered by your employer are better than none. These bene- fits can help kick-start your longterm savings goals. You should also look into starting a TFSA, particularly if you want to start saving for the down payment on a mortgage, a new car or another major expense that may be coming up in the next few years. By starting your career, you’re at the beginning of a long journey toward financial success. When you’re fresh out of college, it may not seem like there is much you can do to improve your financial situation, however, the seeds of mighty oaks were planted long ago. The same goes for finance. Saving for your future is a longterm process, and the earlier you start, the better your financial future will be. Jeremy Wall is studying Professional Financial Services at Fanshawe College. He holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario. Abstaining from abstinence education ALEX KRESS THE BRUNSWICKAN Evidently, she pledged her virginity to her father in a purity ball. Then she married Nick Lachey and had free reign to ravish him, much to her dad’s delight. “We’re celebrating the fact that she can do it till she’s blue in the face,” said Joe Simpson, smiling, after his daughter’s marriage. The film touches on other subjects surrounding the idea of virginity like “legislating chastity” via the Republican effort to defund abortion and the Plan B emergency contraceptive, and vaginal rejuvenation surgery, which has become the fastest growing form of plastic surgery in the U.S. While it would’ve been interesting to see the documentary extended to include commentary from young women and men who’ve experienced abstinence-only education, the film was effective in relaying its overall message: women must be regarded as having more depth to them than what’s between their legs. They have brains, compassion and power. It’s clear that a dialogue needs to begin about the importance of sex education, especially with the recent outbreak of syphilis in New Brunswick, which continues to worsen. Each woman has a right to remain a virgin, of course, but it shouldn’t be at the risk of ignorance about sex. Rebecca Grieb On March 10, we honoured National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Day to reflect on the impact of HIV/AIDS on females across the globe. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which attacks the body’s immune system. It can be passed through infected bodily fluids – including shared needles and syringes – but is most commonly transmitted through unprotected sex. Over 10,000 women are infected with the disease each year, and these numbers are not including those who are unaware they are living with the infection. Becoming aware of the disease is extremely important. It is vital that both men and women understand the serious implications of Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV/AIDS. So what can you do to protect yourself? Always ask your partner about their sexual history. Some abstinence-only educators want young women to liken the violent image to the breaking of the hymen during sex — a vaginal membrane often erroneously believed to signify virginity — in a scene from the documentary The Purity Myth. So, imagine a mallet to your hymen. Did you wince? That’s exactly the reaction these educators want from young women; the hope is if they thought about having sex before, they’ll think twice about it after that gory display. However, that’s not exactly the case. The documentary, which is based on Jessica Valenti’s book that exposes the failures of abstinenceonly education and aims to dispel the argument that a woman’s value is based on her virginity, claims that abstinence-only education actually provokes the opposite effect. It doesn’t work. And worse, the film says 80 per cent of abstinenceonly education contains false information. As a result, teens are engaging in high-risk sexual behaviour. They’re not armed with the knowledge that they can contract sexually transmitted infections (STIs) from unprotected oral and anal sex, but what they are told is that vaginal intercourse before marriage is off limits. You can see the confusion here. The Purity Myth exposes the fanaticism of “a moral panic over sexuality” in the United States and the rhetoric that’s spewed in schools at the cost of taxpayers — $1.3 billion since 1996 — despite 82 per cent of Americans supporting proper sexual education programs. Then, there are the purity balls. These archaic, downright creepy ceremonies involve young girls — sometimes as young as six or seven years old — and their fathers. The girls get dolled up in ball gowns with fancy up-dos and makeup and pledge their virginity to their fathers until marriage; their fathers dress in tuxedos and pledge to protect their daughters’ virginity until she’s married. It was unsettling, to say the least. These girls are being identified as sex objects as young as six; they don’t even know what sex is. “Women are still led to believe that our moral compass lies somewhere between our legs — literally,” said Jessica Valenti, producer of the film. “There’s this antiquated notion that fathers own their daughters’ sexuality.” What was disturbing was the segment on pop star Jessica Simpson. HEALTH, BODY AND FITNESS not getting the potentially lifethreatening disease. Use protection. Unprotected sex of any kind is dangerous, and unprotected anal sex has the highest HIV transmission rate. Visit your doctor regularly and treat any existing infections. Open wounds from STIs carry the highest risk for HIV infection, so be smart and get tested regularly and treated. There is no reason to avoid getting tested, so be sure to go to your doctor or a clinic today. HIV/AIDS is a serious, life-threatening disease and becoming aware of what it is and what it does to the body is the first step toward maintaining good health. As students, we have a choice: to live a life of ignorance, or to become aware and spread our knowledge on HIV/AIDS with others. Sometimes the most socially unmentionable topics are the ones that need to be addressed the most. It is our job as students to spread the word using the wide variety of social channels through which we communicate – the multiple social media platforms, word of mouth and at events held on campus every year. Make the choice; use your voice. Makeup for photography BEAUTY BOY JOSHUA R. WALLER joshua.r.waller@gmail.com Have you ever taken a picture and wondered why you looked so white (washed out), overly shiny and/or had a really flat complexion? Chances are you were just applying your makeup like you normally would on a day-to-day basis. The truth is, makeup for photography is a bit different because there are certain things you need to avoid and there are certain products that work better than others. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go out and buy a whole other set of makeup, but you may need to apply the makeup you already have in a different way. The first and most important tip is to avoid foundations that have an SPF. Any foundations that contain these sun protection ingredients tend to turn out very pale when the flash hits it. This is because they are reflective – the flash’s light bounces off of it, making the face appear very pale and washed out. Also, some translucent powders can lead to the same effect that a foundation with a SPF has. However, that being said, powders are very important in reducing shininess, which leads me to my next major issue with makeup for photography. People can tend to look shiny in photographs when a flash is used, especially when the person has oily skin. Even a person with dry skin can appear shiny due to the fact that the camera’s flash is reflecting off the face. There are two ways to avoid this: use a mattifying primer and/or use a setting powder. A mattifying primer will help regulate the face’s oiliness while a setting powder will help lock in all the makeup as well as keep everything matte. Avoid certain translucent powders as they can create a washed-out complexion; use powders with a little bit of a skin tone colour. Another problem people have with pictures is that their complexion tends to look a little bit flat. A photographer can usually edit this to give more depth and dimension to the face, but it’s best to accomplish this with makeup. The key to this is contouring, highlighting and adding blush/bronzer to the complexion. For pictures, it is okay to apply a bit more product than usual because you want to make sure your face has enough dimension (especially if the photo is being taken at a distance). The best products to use for this are either the Lise Watier Portfolio or the Smashbox Contour and Highlight Kit. The next time you are modelling for a photo shoot or are going to an event where you know a lot of pictures will be taken, you now have a few tips to use to make sure you look fabulous in each photo. Avoid SPFs, invest in a setting powder and don’t be afraid to add a little bit more makeup than you are used to in order to make sure it shows up in the pictures. I am currently going through a personal dilemma and I find that this article is the perfect place to fully spill on the problem I am having. Fashion students have the option of doing a co-op work term during the summers between the years of our program. Unfortunately, lacking motivation, I have been completely unable to find the drive to do anything – no, seriously… anything. So for all you slowpokes like myself, this is my guide to getting off your ass and getting on with things. Step one: Hit em’ where it hurts Step one requires hardly any effort at all; e-mails are these great little personalized messages that say “I care.” When writing an email, think very diligently about who can help you not be lazy. I find the easy way to do this is to have people clarify what you need to do. By clarifying, you’re making things more straightforward; you’re saying, “What do I need to do to get where I want to be?” Emailing the counseling services at the school or the co-op department is a great way to start – they are here to help you. The counseling services can help you narrow your search so you can figure out what it is you’re looking for. On the other hand, the co-op department is great at helping students get where they want. This is definitely an important first step. Step two: Polish and spiffy up Get your shit together. Go into that folder on your computer that might be labeled “professional shit,” “work related” or some other title that tells you exactly what’s in there and find your resume. Open that document and read it. Would you hire yourself? To be honest, my resume is in desperate need of some polishing; it’s covered in cobwebs of the past and it needs a little refreshing. When fixing up your resume, make it your own. Jazz it up! Make it professional and slightly personalized – obviously the level of personalization depends on what you’re applying for. Realistically, no matter where you’re applying to, they’re getting more than just your qualifications, they’re getting your personality as well. Show them who you are through unique borders, interesting page textures and, if you must, pull an Elle Woods and spray it with your favourite perfume. Step three: Cool and quenched As I write these steps, I think about all the things I am going to do this week to get my own shit in line. The most important lessons my parents have taught me are the following: always call back a friend, be courteous and, most importantly, if you want something badly enough, be persistent and SHOW them that you want it. When I applied for my first job, I went in and handed in my resume. Then three days later, I called. After they didn’t call me back, I called back four days later. They called me in the next day for an interview. Hired me on the spot. Started the next day. After I had been working there for about a year, they told me they hired me because I kept calling back and they knew I was serious. Someone doesn’t call back repeatedly because they don’t want the job. After you apply or send out your email, make sure you follow up, but do so gently – there is no need for you to pester someone who has a ‘Not Hiring’ sign in his front window. So when you find yourself hunting for a job, a paid work term or whatever it may be, get real and get on it. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was Anna Wintour’s career. Happy hunting! There are things we all look for in a job; if the hours are good, if we’ll still have a life, if the pay is reasonable. What we don’t always intend on looking for at a new job is a relationship, but it happens. Dating co-workers can have ups and downs, so before you decide to date anyone that you work with, you should look at both the pros and cons. Pros Secrets are kinda hot Secrets aren’t always the best idea, but who are we kidding, secret relationships are kind of hot. When you first start dating someone you work with, chances are you want to keep things between the two of you. If you are able to sneak away on your lunch hour for secret rendezvous or make out in the staff room when no one is around, it can be fun and spice up the relationship. See them more Some people work opposite schedules from their partner, so it can be tough if one person works days and the other works nights. At least if you work together, you’ll get to see them more. I work in a restaurant, so five nights a week I’m working, which makes it tough to be in a relationship with anyone. If you work with a co-worker, at least you know you will have similar schedules, which allows you to see one another. Cons No space In relationships, it’s nice to have your own time apart – for one thing, it gives you more to talk about when you get together. Imagine waking up to your boyfriend every day, going to work together and then, after the work day is done, going home together, making dinner and going to bed, just to do it all again tomorrow. That is way too much time together. It’s not healthy to spend 24/7 with someone; it makes people feel crowded, which can lead to resentment. No escape from fights The one good thing about having a fight with your significant other is knowing that when you go to work, you can have time to breathe and can calm down. When you work with them, you don’t get that luxury. If you happen to have a fight in your relationship, having to go to work with them can make things worse and create tension, which can be awkward for the people around you. No boundaries When you date someone you work with, it seems that everyone knows your personal life. It’s no longer just a relationship between you and your boyfriend, but a relationship with your entire office. They know when you are having problems, when you are fighting and sometimes even the intimate details. CREDIT: STOCK IMAGES Dating a co-worker can have its benefits and challenges. Breakups Let’s face it, most of the time breakups are inevitable, as much as we don’t like to admit it. What helps the healing process is not having to see your ex, but when you are constantly working with them, it’s hard to get over it. It can How to deal with a problem also create a weird tension between you, which could affect your job performance, especially if you didn’t end it on good terms. For details email: pat@soft-infertility.com a_mcgee3@fanshaweonline.ca Let’s take a moment to acknowledge a simple fact: all couples have rough patches. Whether you’re the lucky few who have just the rare spat or you have a bigger, more serious problem to deal with, no relationship can escape the bumps in the road. I think that people who have never had to experience a long distance relationship can easily underestimate the value of face-to-face interaction when working out a problem in relationships. There are ways to survive a long distance argument, though, and here are my tips to help you through: • Take a step back. If you’re upset about something that your significant other said or did and your emotions are running high, take a few moments to calm down and make sure you’re not overreacting. Trust me, I know from experience: blurting out the first thing you think when you’re upset on the phone does not lead to a good time. It may take a few minutes – or even a few hours – to gain perspective on the situation, but the wait will be worth it when you can walk into the conversation cool, collected and ready to deal with the problem with as little fuss as possible. • But not for too long! Leaving the problem unattended to, and CREDIT: STOCK IMAGES Before blowing up on the phone, take a step back and regroup. your partner in the freeze-out zone, for too long will do more harm than good. Also make sure that they know you need some time to think; asking for space is the mature thing to do, while simply ignoring your partner is far from it. • If it can wait until you’re together, then let it. If you have an urgent problem, like if your significant other didn’t pay a bill, then it needs to be dealt with in a timely manner, but if your problem is more on the “I’m thinking about this part of our future and I’m concerned” side of things, try to wait. I cannot stress the importance of face-to-face communication whenever possible. Being able to see your partner’s facial expressions and sense their mood will do wonders for having a productive conversation. If it’s not possible to wait – maybe you won’t see them for months – then make sure they are aware of the importance of the conversation before they blindly walk into a minefield. • Choose your method of communication wisely. If your significant other did something that seriously upset you, say killing your goldfish accidentally or losing something that was important to you, texting about it is not a good idea, nor is writing a snail mail letter that they won’t see for weeks. I would say a good rule of thumb is most problems shouldn’t be dealt with through text messages unless it is your very last option. At least try to talk about things over the phone where you can hear each other’s voices; text messages are all too easily misinterpreted. I hope these tips will help you get through your next bump in the road with your paramour, though I hope even more than you have as few bumps as possible! Office hours Monday to Friday 9am - 4:30pm. Volume 44 Issue No. 26 March 26, 2012 www.fsu.ca/interrobang/ SPORTS&LEISURE 29 Comparing the Infiniti FX35 to the BMW X3 MOTORING NAUMAN FAROOQ naumanf1@yahoo.com If you are in the market for a stylish, luxurious SUV that won’t actually be used to go through a ravine or cut its way through a forest, then the new BMW X3 and updated Infiniti FX35 will be on your shopping list. But which is best? To find out, we will look at the three-P’s: Practicality, Performance and Price. Practicality: Both vehicles are capable of carrying five people in relative comfort, but neither is what you’d call spacious. The X3 has more headroom in both the front and back, but the FX35 seems to have more shoulder room. However, if you are interested in carrying luggage, the X3 has a much more spacious trunk than the FX35. It is quite incredible to find such a small trunk space in a vehicle the size of the FX35, but this vehicle is all about style, so practicality had to take a back seat. So if it’s practicality you’re looking for, the X3 is the winner in this category. However, from an aesthetics point of view, the FX35’s interior looks a lot more up-class compared to the X3. If its style you’re after, the FX35 wins. If you’re looking for gadgets, the FX35 has Infiniti’s wonderful around-view camera system, which turns parking into a video game. BMW offers such a system on the X5, but not on the X3. Advantage FX35 again. Performance: Now onto the fun stuff: which one of these is better to drive? To begin, I’d like to point out that both of these are very stiffly sprung, so ride comfort is not their forte. They are not uncomfortable or harsh but they feel a bit bouncy because of their suspension setup. It’s something you can get used to quite quickly, although children with weak stomachs will regurgitate their meal in the back seat quite quickly (as I was recently told by owners of such vehicles). But SUVs like these are less about ride quality and more about speed and handling. On that front, neither of these disappoints. My X3 was the xDrive35i model, which means it had the 3.0-litre, six-cylinder motor with a twinscroll turbo-charger. This results in 300 hp and 295 lb/ft of torque. Power goes to all wheels via a silky smooth new eight-speed automatic gearbox. However, due to the bulk of this vehicle, it does- n’t feel as quick as it should. On the plus side, a week’s average fuel-economy of 12.2 litres/100km is quite good for a vehicle of this size and power. The FX35 is thirstier. It averaged 14.0 litres/100km, but then its motor is naturally aspirated and it feels a lot quicker. The FX35 has a 3.5-litre V6 that produces 303 hp and 262 lb/ft of torque. Power goes to all wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox. While both the X3 and the FX35 have active allwheel drive systems, it’s the system in the FX35 that feels more tuned for sporty driving. Trust me, you can take off-ramps at silly speeds in the FX35 and it won’t even flinch. I have driven many sports cars that I wish handled as well as the FX35. So if you’re a bit of a keen driver, the FX35 will put a bigger smile on your face than the X3, so despite its thirst, the FX35 wins this category. Price: The FX35 starts at $53,250. My “Limited Edition” model, however would set you back $61,900. That is a lot, but you also do get a lot of equipment for that outlay. The X3s are cheaper to begin with. You can get the X3 with a smaller engine – the xDrive28i model – from just $41,900. The xDrive35i model starts at $46,900. My tester, which CREDIT: AUTOMATION-DRIVE.COM This week, Nauman Farooq takes a look at the Infiniti FX35 and the BMW X3 – which luxury SUV will come out on top? came with the M-sport package and lots of optional extras, was over $60,000. So, in short, both these vehicles end up costing you about the same, but you have the potential to spend less at the BMW showroom, so advantage BMW here. Verdict: So, which one would I actually have if I had to choose between these two? This is a tough one as both vehicles have plenty of strengths and weaknesses, but after spending a week with both these vehicles, I am leaning more towards the FX35. At the end of the day, it felt a bit more special and unique, and sometimes that is enough to swing the vote. Get outside and get active FUN AND FITNESS RICK MELO melo_rick@hotmail.com It has been a rough weekend for Fanshawe College, but it has been a GREAT week for weather! A few days ago, I was walking outside after work to my car and nearly got drilled with a football and road hockey ball. Multiple students were playing all sorts of sports and soaking up the sun – all for good reason, considering the high temperatures we have been getting. It’s March 20 as I write this, which makes it the “last day of winter,” even though it may not seem to make any sense with all this sun. Compared to last year’s record-breaking snowfalls, we were lucky this time around and it appears as though spring is here for good. The first few days of nice weather are always exciting; everyone is out jogging, playing and drinking in the sun. What happens far too often throughout the weeks after the good weather begins is that the same people are no longer outside. Their enthusiasm quickly dwindles to the point where you’d think it’s snow time blues season all over again. It’s amazing how quickly some people take ideal weather for granted. It’s the same people that end up complaining when wintertime rolls around again too quickly. Yes, spring and summer always seem to fly by, but it doesn’t mean people can’t take better advantage of it while it’s around! It’s just about that time of year again for patios, boozing and tanning. Let’s not forget it’s also time for beach volleyball, tennis and biking! There are simply way too CREDIT: KIRSTEN ROSENKRANTZ Nate Tichbourne celebrates an unseasonably warm day in March by playing football with a friend in the field behind Fanshawe College. many activities to be had over the warm months. Better weather results in more alternative choices for physical activity. The best part about it is that outdoor activities are always the most fun. There’s less room for excuses to avoid getting some exercise when all you have to do is step out your door and get involved in something, anything and everything. So get yourself doing the outdoorsy activities you love to do. Make it a habitual routine, leaving no room for regret while making it one of your best sunny seasons yet. Don’t be “that guy” crying come wintertime because he spent the whole summer indoors playing Call of Duty. Now that I’ve said my piece, I expect to see more footballs whizzing by my head when going to my car after work! However, if you’ve got kids taking up soccer or hockey, the X3 will be the more practical choice. So take a look at your own lifestyle and choose accordingly. Although some teams have locked up their playoff spot (and what the heck is St. Louis doing sitting first in the league?), there are a bunch of teams just a couple of wins or so out in both the Eastern and Western Conference. They’re all going to be playing hard to get into the bottom four. Here is where some of them currently sit, and how likely they are to actually make the playoffs this season: Winnipeg Jets: Only a few points out of eighth, the Jets could be poised to bring playoff hockey back to Winnipeg for the first time in well over a decade. No one would have expected it based on their roster at the beginning of the season, but, led by the productive Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane, the Jets have had a successful season, even if they don’t break into the playoffs. It’s tough, because only seventh and eighth place in the East are within range, and Peg City is competing with Buffalo, Carolina and Toronto for that final spot, but so far this season the Jets have proven the unlikely is possible. They may continue to do that. Buffalo Sabres: The Sabres are competing with Winnipeg for one of the bottom spots in the East. Their star player is, of course, Ryan Miller, and whether they make it into the playoffs depends much on him. Unless Miller gets hot (and it could happen), I don’t think they have the team to get deep this year anyway, should they sneak into one of the last spots. However, Buffalo needs to justify their high payroll by at least making it into the East’s top eight, otherwise changes could come to the Sabres over the summer. 7 9 5 8 6 3 4 2 1 3 2 8 5 4 4 1 6 7 2 8 6 9 1 3 1 7 2 4 5 5 4 3 9 8 2 9 7 6 1 9 5 1 8 7 7 8 5 3 6 6 3 4 2 9 9 5 4 6 2 8 3 1 7 6 3 7 9 1 5 2 4 8 1 8 2 3 7 4 6 9 5 San Jose Sharks: The West has a few more horses in the race for its final playoff spots, and San Jose is one of those horses. They’re competing with Phoenix, Colorado, Los Angeles and Calgary for one of the bottom two spots. Led by Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, they might make that final spot. They’ve been a team poised to win the Cup for a few years now, but have underachieved. If they miss the playoffs entirely this year, that could be the end of the Sharks in their current incarnation. Phoenix Coyotes: Where this team will be located in a few years’ time is anyone’s guess. It could be Mars for all we know. But they’re making another solid push for the playoffs this year, and they might make it. The Coyotes have never been successful, particularly in the playoffs, whether it be in the desert or in their past life as the NHL’s first version of the Winnipeg Jets. Led by 30-goal man Radim Vrbata and resurgent goaltender Mike Smith (replacing Ilya Bryzgalov), they could be a Cinderella story this year. A few of their long-suffering players (here’s to Shane Doan) would be justly rewarded for being with the fledgling team for so long. As for who wins the Cup, who knows? The New York Rangers have been solid, but they’re the New York Rangers and have decades’ worth of playoff futility behind their name, so I won’t be making any huge bets on them. With Sid back in Pittsburgh, that throws predictability in the East out the window. Anything goes. In the West, Vancouver could go the distance and Detroit is always a threat. Who knows with St Louis? We might see Pittsburgh versus Vancouver in the finals, but there are so many possible combinations this year, it’s unpredictable. The 2012 NBA trade deadline came and went and it left some basketball fans like me wondering things like would Dwight Howard be traded? Would Pau Gasol be traded? Which team would strengthen their squad up in the hope of lifting the trophy at the end of the playoffs? It’s questions like this that are asked around every trade deadline, whether it’s the NHL, MLB or the NBA. There were some moves that came as a surprise, and some that didn’t cause such a big uproar. Derek Fisher to Houston: This was the biggest move that took place on deadline day. The longtime L.A. Lakers point guard was dealt to the Houston Rockets for a first-round pick in 2012 and reserve centre Jordan Hill. Fisher was a virtuoso at leading former Head Coach Phil Jackson’s triangle offense before the Hall of Fame coach retired. Fisher struggled to adjust to new coach Mike Brown’s system, as he lacked the explosion and quickness to effectively run Brown’s traditional offense. Interestingly, Fisher was subsequently bought out by Houston and is free to sign with any team. Ramon Sessions to the L.A. Lakers: This was the other deal that the Lakers were involved with on deadline day. Point guard Sessions and small forward Christian Eyenga moved to California for two-time NBA champion Luke Walton, former three-point contest winner Jason Kapono and a first-round pick in 2012. Sessions should fit nicely into Brown’s plan. It should be noted that Kapono was put on waivers by Cleveland. Monta Ellis to Milwaukee: This wasn’t a deadline day move, but it was one of the most talked- about trades. The Golden State Warriors gambled by trading Ellis, their leading scorer, for injured Milwaukee Bucks centre Andrew Bogut. The Warriors have made the playoffs once since 1994 and haven’t had a true centre in years. The Warriors will be fearful of the fact that Ellis could become an allstar in Milwaukee. But it’s a gamble they took and if Bogut can stay healthy, it could be one that pays off. As part of this trade, Ekpe Udoh and Kwame Brown also went to Milwaukee while Stephen Jackson joined Bogut in Golden State (only to be traded to San Antonio on deadline day). Leandro Barbosa to Indiana: You know that things are not going your way when you trade two players for a second-round draft pick. Such was the case for the Toronto Raptors. Barbosa and Anthony Carter join the high-flying Pacers who are looking to secure the playoff spot they currently sit in. To be honest, I’m surprised that one of the big teams did not swoop in for Andrea Bargnani, who has clearly been Toronto’s go-to man in an otherwise lacklustre season. The Raptors will have Indiana’s second-round pick in 2012. Nenê to Washington: Brazilian centre Nenê was dealt by Denver to Washington, leaving many to question his contribution to the Denver franchise. This trade might haunt Denver in the short run, for Nenê is a playoff veteran but with JaVale McGee and Ronny Turiaf moving to Denver from Washington, it could ultimately pay off for the Nuggets. Marcus Camby to Houston: The Portland Trailblazers, who are already without centre Greg Oden, traded their other centre Camby to the Rockets. Camby has expressed desires to end his NBA career in Houston. In return, Portland received point guard Jonny Flynn, centre Hasheem Thabeet and a future second-round draft pick. The Rockets are in a playoff position and are hoping to make a play- CREDIT: USATODAY.NET The L.A. Lakers traded veteran point guard Derek Fisher to Houston. off run. For Portland, it looks to be a season of rebuilding after the team parted ways with head coach Nate McMillan as well. Gerald Wallace to New Jersey: When I said rebuild mode for Portland, I meant it. The Blazers sent Wallace to New Jersey in exchange for former Utah centre Mehmet Okur, forward Shawne Williams and a first-round pick in 2012. Okur is a centre who loves to shoot, so that could help Portland on offence, but for a team in a mini state of crisis, 2012 doesn’t look to be all that good a season for fans in Rip City. There were three other trades in the NBA that I didn’t talk much about: Stephen Jackson to San Antonio, two days after the Golden State Warriors acquired him; Nick Young left Washington and will line up for the L.A. Clippers; and the Memphis Grizzlies sent Sam Young to Philadelphia and acquired Ricky Sanchez in return. The stage has now been set for the 2011/12 NBA season to burst into life, and the season should live up to all the hype it has been promising. Mock draft, part one NBA WATCH VICTOR KAISAR twitter: @supermario_47 It’s that time of year again, folks! Time for the NFL Czar’s annual NFL mock draft. Of course, a lot may change in the coming days when the dominos finish falling from the Peyton Manning signing in Denver, but I am going to do the best I can. 1. Indianapolis Colts select Andrew Luck, quarterback from Stanford – This one is pretty much set in stone. Unless the Colts pull a late swerve and grab RG3, Luck will take the field week one and attempt to replace Manning. 2. Washington Redskins select Robert Griffin III, quarterback from Baylor – After trading an insane amount of draft picks to the Rams, the Skins get their new franchise QB. RG3 has unbelievable talent, but he may lack the size to excel in the pros. 3. Minnesota Vikings select Matt Kalil, offensive tackle from USC – As the Vikes move forward with Christian Ponder at QB, goal number one has to be re-building the offensive line. Kalil will start right away and be a Pro Bowler in no time. 4. Cleveland Browns select Trent Richardson, running back from Alabama – While some may have them reach for Ryan Tannehill, I think the Browns stick with Colt McCoy for another year. Richardson will be the best RB the Browns have had since they returned to Cleveland. 5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Morris Claiborne, cornerback from LSU – After cleaning up in free agency, the Bucs take the next step towards a playoff berth by addressing their beat-up secondary. 6. St. Louis Rams select Justin Blackmon, wide receiver from Oklahoma State – So the Rams move back four spots, get a slew of picks and draft the same player I think they would have at number two. What a trade! 7. Jacksonville Jaguars select Riley Reiff, offensive tackle from Iowa – Iowa breeds tough, consistent offensive lineman, and the Jags need to jump on this one. He’ll provide the stable presence needed on the line. 8. Miami Dolphins select Ryan Tannehill, quarterback from Texas A&M – After missing out on Manning, Matt Flynn and maybe even Alex Smith, the Dolphins will reach for a QB. Poor Matt Moore, he had a solid year, but the Dolphins are soooo eager to replace him. 9. Carolina Panthers select Melvin Ingram, defensive end from South Carolina – Either Ingram or Dontari Poe. Either way, the Panthers get a key piece for their front seven. He’ll be the pass rusher they have missed since Julius Peppers left. 10. Buffalo Bills select David DeCastro, offensive guard from Stanford – Despite some decent tackles left on the board, the Bills grab the best guard prospect to come out since Steve Hutchinson. He’ll anchor this line for next 10 years. Well, that’s all for now. Picks 11 through 20 are on tap for next week. Do they have what it takes to move on? Champions League quarterfinal preview FANSHAWE FC MARTY THOMPSON sensandsoccerfan@hotmail.com twitter: @martythompson_ The Union of European Football Associations Champions League has pushed to its final eight of the tournament. The nation represented cross-Europe from Portugal to Cyprus, and features a fairly even draw. However, there are still plenty of interesting matchups to look for. APOEL FC from Cyprus has been pitted against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. The Cypriots are making their first foray into the knockout stage, and showed an impressive two-leg win over Lyon to get here. Brazilian striker Aílton Gonçalves da Silva will be looking to return to his form in the group stage, scoring three goals in five games, but Real is the obvious favourite for this matchup. The current leaders in Spain will want to push forward in this competition, just as Manager Jose Mourinho has done before. Marseille will take on Bayern Munich in the second quarters. Both teams came from behind in the round of 16, while Bayern showed they can score at will against Basel. Marseille doesn’t seem like they are of the quality to take that next step in the Champions League; nothing about the club really screams quality. They are currently ninth in Ligue 1 in France. Benfica versus Chelsea just might be the second most entertaining matchup here. Chelsea is on an upswing, while Benfica is utterly efficient at what they do. Draws with Manchester United in $ the group stages, followed by clutch wins wherever they need them. This will be very close if Chelsea keeps playing the way they are playing. And yet it could be more important to Chelsea to win this game. Their domestic season has been considered a failure. While the most exciting matchup is between two juggernauts of Europe: AC Milan and Barcelona. This game will feature the return of AC Milan’s Zlatan Ibrahimović against his former team. Zlatan helped his club keep a four-point cushion in Italy last week, and will be sure to open his account against Barca. However, Lionel Messi will also be sure to pot some going the other way. Both offensive players seem to be scoring for fun these days, and that won’t stop with these matches. The defence on both of these teams has been known to shut down very effectively, but Barca still manages to float balls into the net. In their matches against Bayern Leverkusen, their opponents put 10 behind the ball, yet they still scored three goals. I hate to make predictions, but here are my favourites for the semifinals: Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Barcelona. Other stories: Montreal Impact FC drew their first game at home against Chicago by a score of 1-1. They filled Olympic Stadium, breaking a record for attendance at a soccer match there. Also, Nyassi finally got shifted to the wing, and he assisted on the goal. Toronto FC beat the L.A. Galaxy in the North American Champions League and will now play Santos in the semi finals. That home match will be played at BMO Field. www.fsu.ca HEALTH & Dental Plan Pick them up in SC2001 OPT OUT CHEQUES ARE IN! It’s that time of year again: 16 teams are left in their quest to win the OHL championship and a chance to represent the league in the Memorial Cup. This year we’re in for a great series. Here are the matchups and my predictions: Eastern Conference (1)Niagara Icedogs vs. (8)Oshawa Generals (Niagara wins 4-1) (2)Ottawa 67’s vs. (7)Belleville Bulls (Ottawa wins 4-1) (3)Barrie Colts vs. (6)Mississauga St. Michaels Majors (Barrie wins 4-3) (4)Brampton Battalion vs. (5)Sudbury Wolves (Brampton wins 4-2) The East is something special, these teams are very evenly matched and this conference will be very fun to watch. I believe every game will be close – expect a lot of overtime. My dark horse two weeks before playoffs was Oshawa, this is interesting because I picked Niagara to win the East, and I am sticking with Niagara to win the series in five games, I like Oshawa’s high offensive calibre, but Niagara is far too strong in all areas in the game. CREDIT: SUN MEDIA The London Knights will have their hands full against the Windsor Spitfires, but should prevail in six games in their OHL opening round series Western Conference (1)London Knights vs. (8)Windsor Spitfires (London wins 4-2) (2)Plymouth Whalers vs. (7)Guelph Storm (Plymouth wins 4-3) (3)Kitchener Rangers vs. (6)Owen Sound Attack (Kitchener wins 4-0) (4)Sarnia Sting vs. (5)Saginaw Spirit (Sarnia wins 4-1) In the West: same story as the East with no upsets, although I will be watching two series closely: London/Windsor and Plymouth/Guelph. London is still not looking their sharpest and has struggled with Windsor this year splitting the season series – keep in mind these two teams have not won at home when playing each other. In the Guelph/Plymouth series (I have Guelph as my dark horse in the East), these two teams also split the season series, however Plymouth has the momentum going into the playoffs, in the last 10 games they have gone 9-1. I’ve called the only first round sweep for the Kitchener Rangers to beat the Owen Sound Attack. The Attack has not beaten Kitchener this year, perhaps it’s overdue, but I don’t think that will happen in this series. Both teams are in a slump so it will be a very slow but a Kitchener-dominant series. If the defending champions, Owen Sound Attack, want to stand a chance, they will need to use their home ice to their advantage; they have some of the best fans in the league and that may be a factor if they can manage to steal a win on the road – a daunting task. basketball The OCAA Basketball All-Star Game is coming up on Saturday, March 24 at Centennial College in Scarborough.
