Monitoring EU Agri-Food Trade:

Development until February 2016

February 2015 - EU agri-food exports consolidated at high level

EU agri-food exports in February 2016 were worth EUR 10.2 billion , well above export values in January 2016 and even slightly above exports in February 2015.

Highest increases in monthly export values (Feb

2016 compared to Feb 2015) were recorded for

USA (+15%) and China (+13.5%), and for

Norway, Jordan, Australia and Saudi Arabia, while the most important reductions were in export values to North African countries (Algeria and Egypt due to less wheat exports).

The highest increases in monthly export values were achieved for wine and spirits, followed by pork , vegetables, olive oil.

Export values for butter also increased in February 2016 compared to one year ago.

On the other hand, monthly export values in

February 2016 compared to February 2015 went down in particular for wheat and other cereals, and for hides and skins.

In February 2016 agri-food imports to the EU increased to a value of EUR 8.9 billion from EUR

8.4 billion in February 2015. The highest increase in monthly imports was from Argentina, while imports from India went down.

Because of higher values for imports, the trade balance for all EU agri-food products in

February 2016 was reduced to EUR 1.4 billion from EUR 1.8 billion in February 2015.

12-month period: highest increases in exports to USA, China and Saudi

Arabia

For the 12-months period March 2015 to

February 2016, EU agri-food exports reached a value of more than EUR 129 billion, meaning an increase by 6% in value compared to the same period one year ago.

Major gains were achieved in values of agri-food exports to the US and China (EUR +3 billion for each) and to Saudi Arabia (EUR +1 billion).

Exports to Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab

Emirates, Australia, Canada and Israel also increased by more than EUR 250 million each in the latest twelve-months period. Exports to

Russia decreased further from EUR 8.1 billion

(March 2014 to Feb 2015) to EUR 5.5 billion

(March 2015 to Feb 2016), i.e. a reduction in values by 32%.

Analysing the performance over the last twelve months per product category, export values increased in particular for cereals other than wheat (EUR +824 million; +40% compared to export values in the 12-months period one year ago, although going down in February 2016), wine (EUR +850 million; +9%), spirits and liqueurs (EUR +679 beer

(EUR +488 million; +17%) as well as for live animals (EUR +503 million; +26%). In relative terms, high increases in 2015 export values were also seen for soya beans, eggs and honey.

Exports of milk powders (EUR -725 million;

-15%) and fresh fruit (EUR -232 million; -9%) lost most in export values over the last 12 months, both of them concerned by the Russian embargo. Milk powder exports also suffered from the contraction of Chinese demand for dairy products. Also sugar (-17%) and ethanol (-

21.5%) experienced losses in export values over the previous 12 months, while cheese exports in value terms stabilised at the low level achieved in the previous period.

(extraction date for statistics: 13/04/2016)

Agri-food imports: main increases in imports from Argentina

Agri-food imports from third countries in the period March 2015 to February 2016 came into the EU at a value of EUR 114 billion, i.e. an increase by 8.4% compared to the same period one year ago. The export surplus for the 12months period stands at about EUR 16 billion.

Imports from the USA showed the highest increase in values (EUR +1.6 billion; +15%) in the 12-months period until February 2016.

Import values for agri-food products from

Argentina also went up by EUR 790 million

(+15%) over the last 12 months of which EUR

212 million in February 2016 only. Remarkable increases were recorded also for agri-food imports from Turkey (EUR +709

+17%), China (EUR +480 million; +10%) and

Ukraine (EUR +350 million; +9%). Also some

Latin American countries improved in agrifood exports to the EU, such as Colombia, Peru and Chile. On the other hand, imports from

Brazil decreased by EUR 327 million (-2.4%) and imports from other big suppliers, Canada and Indonesia went down as well compared to the previous 12 months period.

Looking at imports per product category, total imports of commodities remained almost stable in value terms, but, in detail, imports of palm oil (EUR -307 million; -5%), soya beans (EUR -

360 million; -7%), oilcakes (EUR -314 million; -

4%) and of beet and cane sugar (EUR -255 million; -17%) decreased, while import values of unroasted coffee and tea increased sizeably

(EUR +366 million; +5%) as well as imports of oilseeds (other than soya beans), wheat and rice .

For products other than commodities, increases were registered in particular for imports of tropical fruit, nuts and spices (EUR

+2.7 billion; +25%), fruit and vegetable preparations (EUR +668 million; +21%), fresh fruit (EUR +460 million), fresh vegetables (EUR

+381 million), as well as wine (EUR +319 million) and spirits and liqueurs (EUR

+202 million). Over the twelve months period, the most remarkable increase in import values was registered for olive oil , jumping form EUR

227 million in March 2014 - February 2015 to

EUR 682 million in the same months one year later, although monthly imports in February

2016 went down compared to February 2015.

Focus on: EU trade with China

China is the second most important destination

(8% of all EU agri-exports, EUR 10.3 billion in

2015) and the fourth most important origin

(4.5%, EUR 5.1 billion) for EU agri-food imports.

The EU is a net exporter of agri-food products to

China since 2011 (balance of EUR +5.2 billion in

2015).

Agri-food exports to China increased by EUR 2.9 billion in 2015. Exports in all major product groups increased with the most significant hike in commodities (+71%; from EUR 1 billion to

EUR 1.7 billion). By product category, EU agrifood exports to China in 2015 were led by infant food with a share of 13%, followed by raw hides and skins (11%) which switched places when compared to 2014 as infant food showed a quicker export growth.

Both, exports of meat offal (10%) and pork

(9%) demonstrate the importance of pig meat in

EU exports to China as the offal category comprises mainly products originating from pigs.

Also, pork exports more than doubled (from EUR

432 million to EUR 934 million) in 2015. Wine

(8%) and cereals other than wheat and rice

(8%) complete the top-six. Due to lower prices for dairy products milk powders dropped out of the top in 2015.

Top EU-28 exports of agri-food to China, trade value and share in 2015

Skins and offal are both products where EU export values to China exceed one third of total

EU exports of these products. For infant food, the share of China in EU world exports is 17%.

Changes in EU imports from China were less pronounced and the structure did not alter since

2014 for the main products. Fresh and dried vegetables dominate with 11%, followed by offal

(10%), vegetable preparations (9%), tropical fruit (8%), silk (6%) and oilseeds (6%).
