International Ice Charting Working Group (IICWG) 5th Ice Analyst Workshop Suitland, MD, USA – May 16-20, 2016 Ice Analysis and Forecasting in the Southern Hemisphere The International Ice Charting Working Group (IICWG) and the JCOMM Expert Team on Sea Ice (ETSI) , together with the European Space Agency, are organizing a 5th Ice Analyst Workshop (IAW-5) focusing on the analysis and short term forecasting techniques of sea ice and icebergs in the Southern Hemisphere. The workshop will be hosted by the U.S. National Ice Center in Suitland, MD–May 16-20, 2016. The goals of this meeting will be to: • Coordinate and harmonize sea ice analysis techniques; • Explore ice analysis in various GIS environments; • Discuss WMO sea ice and iceberg coding standards, and understand sea ice product output formats to include sea ice in SIGRID-3 and S-411 for Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs); • Review and understand the WMO/IHO/WWNWS regulations for preparing sea ice and iceberg information for the southern hemisphere; • Produce the sea ice edge (iceberg) delineation for a GMDSS SafetyNet bulletin and document methods to disseminate information to area coordinators for use; • Discuss the possibility of establishing an ‘international’ database of iceberg information, and; • Look at current operational sea ice models that can assist in short term sea ice forecasting. The intent is to have a hands-on training experience emphasizing common analysis practices and techniques for understanding and sharing sea ice information for the Antarctic. Information on lodging, etc. will be promulgated at a later date. Input from attendees describing their analysis techniques, systems, concerns, etc. are welcome and will be considered as input to the final agenda. Due to the location of the meeting, information will be required from each attendee to satisfy NOAA Security requirements. This information will be used by the Security Office and then destroyed. The form for this security clearance information will be sent with the final agenda or as a separate email.
