Then the Lyapunov exponents can be defined as : 1 lim ln TXt u = λ (i ) , u ∈ E X(i ) E X(i +1) , t →∞ t (3) where λ (1) > λ ( 2 ) > " λ ( k ) ,is the logarithm of eigenvalue of Λ X . E X( ) is the subspace of R m corresponding to the eigenvalues ≤ exp λ ( ) . i i 2 the independent and associated cloned dynamical systems Theorem 1:We consider an independent cloned dynamical system defined by Correspondence author: wpf@mail.iap.ac.cn ⎧ x1 = f ( x1 ) ⎪ ⎪ x2 = f ( x2 ) ⎨ ⎪ # ⎪ x = f ( x ) n ⎩ n Where xi = ( xi ,1 , xi ,2 , " , xi ,m ) T (4) and f is same as (1). Each sub-systems in (4) have difference initial values xi ( 0 ) , and since they following the same dynamical function f we call it a n-th cloned dynamical system. The Lyapunov exponents of (4) is same as Eq (1) but the number of Lyapunov exponents is nk . Proof: Because each xi = f ( xi ) in (4) is independent with other components and could be look as an independent and self-organized dynamical system. the Jacobian matrix ⎛ ∂f i t J i = T = matrix ⎜ ⎜ ∂X j ⎝ t X for (4) is 0 ⎡ J1 0 ⎢0 % 0 J =⎢ ⎢ 0 0 J n −1 ⎢ ⎣0 " 0 0⎤ 0⎥ ⎥ 0⎥ ⎥ Jn ⎦ , where ⎞ ⎟⎟ . ⎠ lim ( J * J ) t →∞ 1 2t 0 ⎡ Λ1 0 ⎢0 % 0 =⎢ ⎢ 0 0 Λ n −1 ⎢ ⎣0 " 0 0⎤ 0⎥ ⎥ 0⎥ ⎥ Λn ⎦ (5) The ergodic property guarrantee that Λ i = Λ X , moreover, the Lyapunov exponents of each system can be defined by (3), and n-th subsystem have nk exponents together. Theorem2:We consider a linear associated cloned dynamical system defined by n y = ∑ ci xi ,and ci ≠ 0 , where xi is same as (4), ie. i =1 ⎧ x1 = f ( x1 ) ⎪ ⎪ x2 = f ( x2 ) ⎪ # ⎪⎪ ⎨ xn −1 = f ( xn −1 ) ⎪ ⎪ xn = f ( xn ) ⎪ n n ⎪ y = ∑ ci xi = ∑ ci f ( xi ) ≡ F ( x1 , x2 , " , xn ) ⎪⎩ i =1 i =1 Transform the variable in the sub-equation xn = f ( xn ) by xn = (6) n −1 c 1 y − ∑ i xi cn i =1 cn will obtain an equation y = g ( x1 , x2 , " , xn −1 , y ) . ⎧ x1 = f ( x1 ) ⎪ ⎪ x2 = f ( x2 ) ⎪ # ⎪⎪ ⎨ # ⎪ x = f ( x ) n −1 ⎪ n −1 n −1 ⎪ = = , , , , " y g x x x y ⎪ ( 1 2 ) ∑ ci f ( xi ) + cn f n −1 i =1 ⎪⎩ , (7) n −1 ⎛1 ci ⎞ − y xi ⎟ ∑ ⎜ c c i = 1 n ⎝ n ⎠ the Lyapunov exponents of y = g ( x1 , x2 , " , xn , y ) is same as Eq(1). Proof: the Jacobian matrix ⎛ ∂f t J i = TXt = matrix ⎜ i ⎜ ∂X j ⎝ for (7) is ⎞ ⎛ ∂git ⎟⎟ and Ri = matrix ⎜⎜ ⎠ ⎝ ∂x j lim ( J * J ) t →∞ 1 2t 0 ⎡ J1 0 ⎢0 % 0 J =⎢ ⎢ 0 0 J n −1 ⎢ ⎣ R1 " Rn −1 0⎤ 0⎥ ⎥ 0⎥ ⎥ Jn ⎦ , where ⎞ ⎟⎟ . ⎠ 0 ⎡ Λ1 0 ⎢0 % 0 =⎢ ⎢ 0 0 Λ n −1 ⎢ ⎣0 " 0 0⎤ 0⎥ ⎥ 0⎥ ⎥ Λn ⎦ (8) The ergodic property guarrantee that Λ i = Λ X , so the each Lyapunov exponents is same as Eq(1). 3. Conclusion and discussion Flowing theorem 2, and takes ci = 1 1 n , thus y = ∑ xi is the ensemble mean n n i =1 system of xi , and its Lyapunov exponents is same as Eq(1). Meanwhile, the maximal Lyapunov exponents for the equation y = g ( x1 , x2 , " , xn , y ) is λ (1) . Because the ensemble mean dynamical system have the same maximal Lyapunov exponents, thus the prediction time Tp ~ 1 λ max ln( Δ δ0 ) (where Δ a given tolerance) will be same as the original dynamical system Eq(1). This discussion is under linear error propagation assumption, and when considers the nonlinear error propagation dynamics will got some difference. But when δ 0 → 0 the difference of Tp between linear and nonlinear case is not significant(Ding and Li 2007).
