Glossary of Electronic ESD Terms, Families and Products General Terms Label Chip SmartCard Magnetic Stripe or Mag stripe Card Power Supply Wire Harness Firmware CardSlide Unit (CSU) Non-serial CardSlide Unit Serial CardSlide Unit Cyber WiFi Description A very small integrated circuit manufactured from silicon that contains both logic and memory, sometimes called microprocessor chip. A credit card size plastic card that has an embedded microprocessor chip that can be loaded with data and refreshed for additional use. A smart card can contain much more information and is more secure than a magnetic stripe card. Known as a “Mag stripe” card, a band of magnetic material is arranged on a plastic card and is capable of storing data which can then be read by swiping the card past a magnetic reading head. This is the standard method for manufacturing credit cards in the US. A device that supplies electric power to a device by converting one form of electrical energy to another. An assembly of wires that are bound together and have a variety of connectors attached to their ends; the harness will transmit signals or electrical power from one device to another, for example from a CardSlide to a washer control board. Contains a set of program code that is embedded into an onboard chip; because it supplies the instruction for the device on which it is mounted, exchanging firmware chips will change the functionality of the device. A device that contains a printed circuit board, a firmware chip and a card insertion throat that accepts, reads and processes the data written of the inserted card. It completes a task based on the programmed functionality. CardSlide Units can be designed to read SmartCards, Magstripe Cards, or both. A stand-alone processor that includes a printed circuit board, a display and firmware; it does not communicate with the device on which it is mounted except to send a pulse, or pulses, to initiate the desired function. A processor that has a more complex protocol allowing it to communicate with the control board of the device on which it is mounted. It has no display because it will control the display on the host machine. This CardSlide Unit can be configured to accept either SmartCard or Magstripe Cards. ESD uses this common prefix having to do with computers to designate products that use Magstripe technology. WiFi is the standard term for wireless network connections. In a WiFi network, a computer translates data into radio signals, transmits them through an antenna to a wireless router which receives and decodes the signal. Link Cloud Router VTM DataTrac Super Manager Function Multi-housing Vended laundry Terminology used by ESD to designate devices that are WiFi enabled. ESD uses this common term for computing resources that are available in a remote location and delivered over a network as a designation for “no on-site” storage of data. A small physical device that join multiple networks together. An IP router joins a store’s local area network (LAN) to the (WAN) of the Internet. This acronym stands for Value Transfer Machine. While this device is available in many configurations; the basic function is to add value to SmartCards and Magstripe cards. In various models this can be done with cash, credit cards, pin based debit or codes; some models also dispense SmartCards. The ability for a VTM to track customer SmartCards using card serial numbers. Built into certain VTM’s, this feature offers the capability to perform audits, execute set-up functions and deploy DataTrac. In the context of the laundry industry, this refers to a residential location where vended washers and dryers are placed in a common laundry room for the benefit of the property’s residents. A business that provides self service vended washers and dryers of various sizes to the general public.
