Find it online at www.pugetsoundfresh.org and search by crop or product, county, farm or farmers market for 12 Puget Sound counties. Whether you’re planning a U-Pick outing or weekend farm tour, you’ll find plenty of resources, including an online version of the 2011 Puget Sound Farm Guide. Puget Sound Fresh is a program of Cascade Harvest Coalition in partnership with King County and King Conservation District. To find out more about Cascade Harvest visit www.cascadeharvest.org Listings included in this directory are for informational purposes only and have been provided by the farms and businesses. All listings are fee based. CASCADE H A RV E S T COALITION C A S C A D E H A R V E S T. O R G One of our greatest heroes, poet and farmer Wendell Berry reminds us all of what we have and must not lose, alerting us to the power of our determination and actions – and that “all food is an agricultural act.” Since 1999, Cascade Harvest Coalition’s “agricultural acts” have been rooted in efforts to activate and educate everyone, from policy makers to consumers to the critical need to protect our natural agricultural resources, to keep farmers farming and farmland accessible. We stand for transforming a food landscape into one that sustains and builds successful farms, thriving communities, a secure regional food supply and active, aware consumers. We all eat. And for those of us who live in the Puget Sound region, we are supremely fortunate to have an abundance of choices throughout the seasons given the excellent growing conditions, land stewardship practices and exceptional food that comes from our farms, forests and waters. But these choices cannot be taken for granted as there are extraordinary pressures on both farmland and farmers. Being actively engaged on where you purchase your food and how you eat not only builds a lasting bond between farmers and eaters; it’s a sustainable choice for community food security and health. If that’s a mission that fits with yours, use this directory to find the CSA that’s just right for you. For additional resources on choosing a CSA on www.pugetsoundfresh.org To learn more about Cascade Harvest Coalition, visit www.cascadeharvest.org 2 How CSAs work: Community Supported Agriculture (known as CSAs) allows you to buy a “share” from a local farm; in return you receive a box of farm-fresh produce every week during the growing season. The farm benefits from your financial and community support. You benefit by receiving the best local produce and getting to know your farmer. It’s a special relationship that builds community, supports our farmers and gives you first pick of peak-fresh products. Each CSA program is unique. Some deliver boxes to your home or a central pick-up location; some require on-farm pick-up. Some offer add-ons, like eggs or flowers; some are produce-only. Some have installment-payment plans; some require payment up-front at the start of the season; and some offer weekly pay-as-you-go options. This guide offers information on both CSAs and Home Delivery services. Generally, there are two types of CSAs - traditional CSAs that grow all their food on-farm and hybrid models that grow some food and source from other farms as well as businesses, like local bakeries. Home Delivery Services are generally not CSAs because they do not farm, but they offer food from local farms as well as local “value added” products (i.e. coffee, cheese). But as 3 with most things, CSAs are evolving, and more and more are adding home delivery and value added products to their offerings. Joining a CSA is easy: • Select a program that interests you. Consider farm location, the size and price of share, delivery or pick-up options and growing practices as well as other amenities. • Contact the farm. Start by visiting their website - you’ll find plenty of information that will help you make your final choice and then follow up with both a phone call and email. Many offer online registration. • Don’t delay! Many seasons offer a specific time frame, i.e. a 20-week growing season that might typically starts in June and will run through the harvest. As more and more consumers are using CSAs you’ll want to sign up as soon as possible.
