ELECTROMECHANICS rev. 11-2013 SLIP RING AUROTAC® AUROTAC® is a rotating slip ring designed and manufactured by Elet.Ca. Mechanical and electrical solutions employed for such product come out directly from the know-how of Elet.Ca acquired during its many-year experience on similar products addressed to the military sector. Thanks to a thorough research work and experiences performed on materials and treatments that Elet.Ca continues and will continue to carry out, an optimal configuration of this product has been found, giving excellent guarantees of reliability for all considered parameters. Thanks to its different types of interface, the AUROTAC® slip ring is suitable for several applications. TECHNOLOGY The AUROTAC® slip ring is totally manufactured in aluminium, with IP 65 protection in order to withstand heavy environmental conditions as temperature, vibrations, socks and (or) aggressive atmospheric agents. Their Tefzel cables guarantee utilization at temperature ranges of –30° ÷ +85°, high insulation rate, low induction between the cable due to excellent dielectric strength. The mobile part and fixed part of the slip ring are joined through a strong shaft bearing the rings fixed to the case by means of suitable ball bearings, assuring a soft and flowing movement. The core of the slip ring, consisting of the brush-ring matching, allows today to operate within the best parameters concerning total resistance of the circuit, dynamic resistance of contact (noise) and cross-talk. The above characteristics kept also at operation speeds exceeding 500 Rpm (1000 Rpm max) are guaranteed by employing pure copper as well as gold against gold matching. APPLICATIONS The range of utilization of standard AUROTAC® having the characteristics described hereunder includes the transfer of continue or modulated signals from and to different peripherals, instrumentation, coils, thermocouples, robotics, turntables, data Bus, television cameras, etc... within limits of standard configuration. OPTIONALS To fulfill special or standard requirements or to improve the pass-band of the slip ring, it can be equipped with cables and special fittings, electric shielding and everything needed for special uses (customers requirements). UTILIZATION FOR DIGITAL SYSTEMS Physical limits of operation frequency impedance and data-rate of standard cables can be widely over come by using twisted cables fulfilling standards of cables in conformity with 5, 5e, 6 categories and in accordance with IEEE 802.3 standards for employments in Giga-Bit - Ethernet. During installation check that the mechanical “play” between fixed part and mobile part of the slip ring is lower than ±0,2 mm in order to minimize as much as possible mechanical stress due to induced vibrations causing shortening of average life of the slip ring. The cable must be strip with suitable tools and/or with sharp blades in order not to ruin the underlying strands or in the shielded cables. Avoid stresses or tensions between the slip ring body and the cable outputs. Ensure correct connections on sockets. Damaged cables may cause slip ring operation failures. As the electrical coupling is dry (it means that lubricant oils are not needed), maintenance is not required. • The AUROTAC® slip ring unit can be used both horizontally and vertically. • Provide current protection (fuse) on wires attached to slip ring. Over-current conditions can cause failure of slip ring. CAUTION: The aluminum body may be electrically “hot” after failure. Disable power source before handling a suspected failed slip ring. MEAN-LIFE Data concerning mean-life obtained after indoor laboratory tests must be considered indicatively, unless some tests conditions are reproduced. Mean-life of each system depends on the combination of many variables as: • type of movement (alternating and (or) continuous); • number of working hours per day; • presence of mechanical vibrations; • backlash between fixed parts and mobile parts; • work environment; • operation temperature and (or) changes of temperature • final application.
