What Do I Take My First Semester?
Courses Particularly Suited to First –Year Students, Fall Semester, 2016-2017
♦ Some courses carry prerequisites or require placement. A few may have filled prior to new
student registration.
♦ Check the SIS class and lab schedule for course descriptions, days and time of courses, and
general education requirements.
♦ Multiple sections of many of the following courses will be offered in the fall. Consult the SIS class
and lab schedule for complete course information.
♦ Some courses require an accompanying lab or discussion section; consult the SIS class and lab
schedule. Additional courses may be open to individual students based on background and
placement. Consult the SIS class and lab schedule and relevant department chair/program
director.
♦ Courses that fulfill GE requirements except BTS-T (Theological Studies) and EIN (Ethical Issues and
Normative Perspectives) are open to first-year students.
♦ FYW and BTS-B GEs are REQUIRED for all first-year students unless you have completed
equivalent pre-college credit. Check your degree audit on the SIS. New first-year students are
pre-registered for one of these courses or a Conversation course for the fall.
♦ FOL requires a sequence of courses in the SAME language, fulfilled through coursework at St. Olaf
but perhaps including pre-college work that provides placement but not credit (see AP information
on Registrar’s Office Web site).
♦ Students are normally advised to begin their foreign language study early in their St. Olaf career
and to then proceed without gaps in the sequence from that point. In some cases, it may not be
possible to begin in the first semester.
♦ Students should not take a WRI course until after completion of FYW or equivalent precollege/transfer credit.
