Camille Pissarro: Impressionist,

Neoimpressionist, Mentor, Friend

During the 19th century in France, artists increasingly rejected convention, explored new artistic expression, and paved the way for modern art. This course explores the work of Impressionist Camille Pissarro and his role in the development of modern art. Often overshadowed by Monet and Renoir,

The Golden Age of Art in the Dutch Republic

For most of the 17th century the Dutch Republic’s trade domination and capitalism development created a very prosperous society and flourishing of the arts. Calvinism’s rejection of religious art in the churches steered artistic subject matter towards portraits, landscapes, still-lifes, and scenes of everyday life. The course focuses on how artists such as:

Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Jacob van Rusdael, Pieter Claesz,

Differing Historical Perspectives on Slavery in

Maryland and the District of Columbia

NEW

This course explores slavery in the Washington, D.C. area beginning in the late 1600s. Ninian Beall’s tobacco plantation occupied the land where the White House is today - but it soon changed. After tobacco wore out the land, slavery made less sense, and it was hard to enforce with an increasingly diverse capital of the United States. By the time of the

Civil War, Washington, D.C. still had slaves, but they lived among a population of free African Americans. Author James

H. Johnston will discuss the differing perspectives on slavery that emerge from his two books, The Recollections of Margaret Loughborough , about a daughter of the Old Dominion of

Virginia , and From Slave Ship to Harvard , which follows six generations of an African American family in Maryland.

Lilly Stone organized the first literary and arts clubs in the farming community, inspired the first flag for Montgomery County, Maryland, and founded the

Montgomery County Historical Society. In her book, Lilly

Stone , author Judy Welles describes the divided loyalties of county residents living close to the Potomac River during the Civil War; letters from Lilly’s son detailing World War I; and the German POWs working at her quarry during World

The Spanish Civil War

NEW

A brutal civil war, between the National Front and the

Popular Front, ensued that lasted for nearly three years (July

1936-April 1939) and claimed the lives of some 500,000 people. In the words of the Associated Press, “the conflict became a battlefield of ideologies—church against the state; the landed against the landless; fascism against elected socialists and communists.” Taking a historical approach towards the Spanish Civil War, this course will explore the internal and international social, political, and economic causes of the war. The course will be interdisciplinary in nature, using

American and Spanish films, documentaries, literature, music and history texts to illustrate the key issues generated by the conflict. You will gain insight into the root problems and complexities of modern Spain. Attention will also be given to the international volunteers that fought in the war, including the Abraham Lincoln Brigade from the United States.

Retelling the Classics for a Contemporary

Audience

NEW

Camus, Kamel Daoud, Nadine Gordimer, Gloria Naylor, and

Shakespeare. The Meursault Investigation by Kamel Daoud is written as a challenge to Camus’s The Stranger ; Nadine

Gordimer’s My Son’s Story uses Shakespeare as a reference point in important ways; Gloria Naylor’s Mama Day builds on Shakespeare’s The Tempest while at the same time focusing on themes of belief and forgiveness. Literature 1890–1900

“The Gay Nineties,” “The Gilded Age,” “The Mauve Decade:” all these epithets have been applied to the 1890’s in Britain and America. But they were also a time of great turmoil (deep recession, labor unrest, anarchism) and the raised voices of new groups (women, immigrants, African-

Americans). The course will explore the ways these social and political developments are reflected in the literature of the period, as well as the rise of literary realism, through the work of such authors as Oscar Wilde, H.G. Wells, Stephen

Being Human: Religion and Spirituality

Religion is a cultural universal, occurring in some form in every society. In this course, we’ll explore the nature of religion and spirituality from an anthropological perspective.

We’ll address the BIG questions: How does a person come to believe something? Is belief compatible with science? What do people of various faiths actually believe and how do their spiritual traditions shape their lives? Does religion structure society, or vice versa? Join us for an exploration of human spirituality, a grand tour of world faiths, and a series of lively discussions. Students 60+ pay fee only. TWA

Income Taxes Don’t Have to Be a Mystery!!

This course will help dispel some of the myths of preparing income taxes, as well as reviewing various methods to help reduce the tax bite. Many of us are frustrated by the act of preparing for our personal income taxes due April 15 each year. It could be a fear of the IRS, or just that math and the paperwork becomes overwhelming. With the use of basic tax software most people can do their own taxes. But understanding how the returns are put together is important to know that you are taking advantage of tax laws, whether you are a small business owner, or simply an employee. Students
