Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child is currently learning how to share, or divide, objects
evenly between two people. Here is your chance to help your child
practice this important skill.
In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your
child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening.
Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it
tomorrow.
Remember, parents are a child’s first teacher. Thank you for your
time and energy in making learning fun and exciting for your child.
Sincerely,

SHARING EQUALLY
Parent Pointer —
Your child is learning how to share objects equally. Dividing is a skill
your child will use throughout school and in his or her daily life. When
we divide something, we separate an amount evenly. This is an
important concept for your child to learn. If he or she is sharing a
treat with a brother or sister, or wanting to place the same number of
toys into two different boxes, he or she will need to understand how to
share the amount equally.
Math in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It —
DIRECTIONS: Read and talk about the Share It! reference sheet
with your child. Make sure he or she understands that when something
is shared equally, each person must have the same amount. Read the
directions about the dog bones and have your child draw the lines from
the bones to the dogs. Ask your child what would happen if there were
five bones. Explain that if there were five bones, there would be an
extra bone; it could not be given to one of the dogs because then they
would have different amounts. Read the directions on the Share That
Amount! activity page to your child. Have fun working with him or her
to complete the activity.
Talk about It —
After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to have
your child show what he or she knows.
Now go have some fun with the activity! (

Share It!
Look at the 2 cookies. Your mom said
you should share the cookies equally
with a friend. What does that mean?
Sharing equally means that each person will get
the same amount!
Circle the picture
that shows two
friends sharing the
cookies equally.
Let’s share these bones evenly between the two dogs.
*First, draw a line from one bone to one dog.
*Since there are more bones left, draw lines to give each dog
the same number of bones.
Does each dog have the same number of bones? Yes!
You shared the bones equally between the two dogs!
Great work!

Share That Amount!
Materials:
Help your child cut out the six boxes from the next page.
Place them in a pile facedown on the table.
You go first. Choose the top card. Cut out the objects
shown on the card.
Share the objects you have cut out equally with your
child.
Place any “extras” in a discard pile.
Now it is your child’s turn to take a card. Help him or her cut
out the objects on the card.
He or she needs to share these objects equally with you.
Take turns equally sharing the objects on the remaining cards.
Have fun helping your child understand
this important skill!

Talk about It
Parent —
Ask your child the following questions:
9What does sharing something equally mean?
9How can you share four jellybeans equally with your
friend?
Write your child’s answers to the above questions on the
reverse side of this page.
OR
Do one of the following activities on the reverse side of
this page:
9With your child, find a set of objects in your home,
such as marbles, crayons, or paper clips. Have him or
her share them equally with you. Then have your child
draw a picture to show what was done.
9Help your child cut out pictures of objects from a
magazine or newspaper, such as different fruits or
rings. Have him or her draw two people and share the
objects equally between these two people. Help your
child glue these pictures next to the people.
