Masonry Separating Walls (Isover RD Party Wall Roll)
Masonry Separating Walls
Isover has developed a glass mineral wool roll designed for use in Robust Detail wall constructions to
meet Part E Building Regulations (England and Wales). Significant cost savings can be obtained since
there is no need for pre-completion testing and additional savings can be made with E-WM-17
as it removes the need of wet plaster or parge coats.
Features
Benefits
• Approved for use in Robust Detail
E-WM-6, E-WM 10, E-WM-13 and
E-WM-17
• Exceeds Part E Building Regulations (England & Wales) requirements in a nominal
75mm and 100mm cavity
• Significant cost savings can be obtained since there is no requirement for
pre-completion testing
• With E-WM-17, additional cost savings can be obtained since there is no requirement
for a sand/cement render and the construction can be drylined with gypsum boards directly to the inner face of the blockwork
• Provides the opportunity to gain up to 4 credits towards The Code for Sustainable Homes with category Hea 2
• 455mm wide glass mineral wool rolls
• Compatible with conventional wall tie spacing ensuring ease of installation
• Since the product is in roll form, ease of installation and acoustic performance is improved due to no/minimal vertical butt joints
• Easy to handle, cut and install
• High quality glass mineral wool
• Minimal on-site waste
• Robust flexible material properties

Construction Overview
Following an extensive site testing programme, Isover RD Party Wall Roll has been approved in the following Robust Details by the RD
Assessment and Approval Committee.
E-WM-17
Robust Detail E-WM-17 is based on 2 leaves of lightweight aggregate blocks with a nominal cavity width of 75mm (70mm Isover RD
Party Wall Roll) or a nominal cavity width of 100m (95mm Isover RD Party Wall Roll) leaf to leaf, with a gypsum-based board ‘dot-and-dab’
finish (a sand/cement render is not required). RD Party Wall Roll is an integral component of this construction.
Block density
1350 to 1600 kg/m3
Wall ties Approved Document E ‘Tie type A’ (Refer to Robust Detail)
Cavity width
75mm nominal cavity width (70mm Isover RD Party Wall Roll)
100mm nominal cavity width (95mm Isover RD Party Wall Roll)
Block thickness
100mm (min), each leaf
Wall finish
Gypsum-based board (nominal 9.8kg/m2)
mounted on dabs
Insulation
Isover RD Party Wall Roll
External (flanking) wall Masonry (both leaves) with 50mm (min) cavity – clear, fully filled or partially filled with
insulation. If the cavity is clear or partially filled, use an Isover Cavity Barrier to minimise
acoustic flanking and to provide effective edge-sealing.

Installation Procedure
1) A section of the leading leaf is built to
a height of 3 block courses, with the
first row of wall ties at approximately
900mm horizontal spacing, positioned
where the insulation is to begin. It is
recommended that the insulation
should start as close to the base of
the cavity as possible to minimise noise
transfer across the cavity.
A second row of wall ties at 900mm
horizontal centres is positioned in the
mortar joint between the second and
third block courses.
the top edge of the insulation in contact
with the wall tie, and with the back
of the insulation in full contact with the
block faces. The insulation should then
be carefully unrolled along the full wall
length.
4) It is essential that both ends of the
acoustic insulation roll are positioned
so they can be fully butt-jointed with
the full fill thermal insulation (or Isover
cavity barrier) that will be installed
in the external walls.
5) Where the full length of the acoustic
roll is installed and it is shorter than
the full length of the party separating
wall, a second piece of insulation should
continue the run, ensuring that the
joining ends form a close butted joint.
Where the insulation needs to be cut,
use a sharp, clean knife.
6) The trailing leaf is built up to the
same level as the top of the acoustic
insulation, that is, 2 courses.
2) This leaf should be constructed at this
3 block height along the full length from
the front to the rear of the separating
wall.
3) Isover RD Party Wall Roll insulation
is removed from its packaging ensuring
that it remains in roll form, but exposing
approximately 750mm of length. This
is then positioned between the base
of the first block course (at the bottom
of the wall) and next row above, with

be protected with waterproof material
Helpful Notes:
• Fully fill all blockwork with mortar
• Ensure that all vertical and horizontal joints in the insulation are tightly butted and cuts are made with a clean knife
• Ensure that only solid blocks are used as
stipulated in the Robust Detail manual.
at the end of the days work, or if work
is suspended, or during rain (Ref: NHBC
Standards Manual Chapter 6.1 – S10-d).
11) Generally, wall ties should be at the
usual spacing of 450mm vertically and
not more than 900mm horizontally (or
in accordance with NHBC guidelines).
IMPORTANT:
It is essential that all mortar droppings
are removed from the top edge of
each run of insulation. Bridging of the
cavity can significantly reduce the
acoustic performance of the wall.
• Cover and protect the wall construction at the end of a days work and during spells of rain.
• Keep any chases for services to a
minimum and fill well with mortar. • For further information refer to the Stagger chases on each side of the wall
