Job Description P os i ti on RSC Education Co-ordinator Contr a c t Ful l -ti me ; Fix e d Te rm unti l 31 De c 2 0 17 Salary £29,572 - £32,852 per annum RESPONSIBLE TO Deputy Director of Science KEY RESPONSIBILITES To support and promote the work of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s (RSC’s) Education Department by developing valuable contact networks across Scotland and increasing engagement levels of teachers in primary, secondary and vocational education (0.8). To work within Glasgow Science Centre (GSC)’s Science Learning team creating chemistry related science experiences which utilise, maximise and encourage GSC’s mission to promote lifelong learning (0.2). MAIN DUTIES To coordinate and promote the activities of the RSC by developing strong and effective networks of contacts across the Scottish education system and chemistry outreach community. To increase engagement with those teaching chemistry at all levels o To provide RSC learning resources and access to professional learning opportunities for teachers at all stages of their career. o To promote and support the Learn Chemistry Partnership increasing teacher engagement with Learn Chemistry. o To contribute to the production of a Scotland Teacher’s e-newsletter. To support RSC members in engaging, enthusing and informing the schools and the general public of the importance and impact of the chemical sciences To support RSC advocates in their promotion of the chemical sciences in Scotland e.g. STEM ambassadors and RSC network groups. To assist in collecting intelligence on local activities for the RSC and contribute to reports on Scottish education policy. To create and maintain effective relationships with key external and internal stakeholders. To work within GSC’s Science Learning team developing new chemistry related education activities and programmes for both education and public visitors in line with the Curriculum for Excellence and GSC’s mission. To train GSC staff in the delivery of programmes, ensuring they are equipped with the relevant knowledge and skills to deliver the experience to the highest quality standard. To organise and assist GSC with education and public special events, programmes and projects as required. To implement the GSC Customer Service promise. Provide a 5 star service and offer a fun, safe and welcoming environment to all customers. To work within the standards of the Glasgow Science Centre’s health and safety policy. To carry out other reasonable duties/tasks as required to deliver and meet the objectives of RSC and GSC. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS Essential Degree level qualification in chemistry Experience of working with education establishments on science-related activities or communicating science to the general public Experience of event and/or project management Strong understanding of the requirements of customers working in or with the chemical sciences Excellent communication skills (oral and written) with ability to influence others and develop relationships Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail Excellent presentation skills with the ability to present to large groups Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc.) Desirable A good understanding of Curriculum for Excellence and SQA National Qualifications in chemistry Experience of teaching chemistry or delivering chemistry outreach activities Experience of developing and coordinating stakeholder networks, partnerships and/or multi-agency projects Full driving license PERSONAL QUALITIES Motivation and creativity to convey learning of science & technology to others Able to motivate, lead and influence others A genuine enthusiasm for the chemical sciences with a high level of commitment to both the RSC’s and GSC’s vision and mission. Ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines and remain calm under pressure A passion for excellence, creativity and innovation Ability to work flexibly to accommodate special events, evening and weekends A willingness to travel when required.
