Fundamentals of RDS
Reference Designation System - ISO/ IEC 81346 standard series
The RDS originates from 1971. It is originally intended to label electrical equipment as a kind of naming convention in large and complex plants like power plants or manufacturing plants, and to create a link from labels and physical components to the related documentation. Today, after 40 years, the standard is at 4 th
edition from 2009, and has expanded the area of application to mechanical and software domains. It deals with object orientated systems and identification of systems and their constituents. The RDS, due to the generic principles, applies for a wide range of branches such as plants (power-, production- and chemical plants), machinery, and now, as something new, also the construction sector.

This part of the tutorial will introduce the basic mechanisms from RDS (ISO/IEC
81346-1 and 81346-2), used to create unambiguous identifiers of objects (recognised as a reference designation):
1.) The main aspects:
Functional aspect (=), Product aspect (-), Location aspect (+)
2.) The classification of objects (type-of relation)
3.) The structuring principles applied for systems (part-of relation)
We recommend reading the 81346-1 and 81346-2 standard prior to the tutorial.
Please see “recommended reading” on next page.
A mini practice on usage of RDS in the construction sector
NB! Wireless access required to the cuneco database (see below).
- Classification of building elements in a roof system

11.55
- Structuring of a roof system in the product aspect (-) and / or:
- Classification of elements in a ventilation system
- Structuring of a ventilation system in the function aspect (=)
The future of RDS
1.) The future development of the 81346 standard series.
2.) How the result from the building environment becomes a part of the standard series, yet backwards compatible with other domains.
3.) How to get involved in standardization.
Evaluation / feedback
Discussion and wrap up of tutorial.

Important - access to cuneco database as a part of the mini practice:
You need to have access to the cuneco database, which will enable you to quickly find the classification codes for the objects, which is a part of the mini practice. We recommend you download the
“cuenco” app (for Android or iOS), and create an account (for free) on the public homepage:
1.) Visit www.cunecoclassification.dk
2.) Create an account (for free) by username and password.
3.) Download “cuneco” app for Android or iOS.
4.) State username and password (the app works on-line, so you need access to the internet when using the app). Select “English” to use the app.
5.) Alternative: Just use your internet browser at www.cuencoclassification.dk
