Western Tydens has been producing Diesel Engine Exhaust Systems at our factory in
Ivybridge, Devon since 1984. Although best known for our Spark Arresters we also offer
exhaust Purifiers, Cleaners and Silencers and all the associated fitting Accessories.
We specialist in bespoke manufacturing, one offs and small batch quantities.
This brochure outlines our standard products and capabilities; however as a lot of our
production is non standard, if you do not find what you are looking for just give us a call and
weʼll try and help, if we canʼt, weʼll know someone who can!

We can manufacture exhaust pipework to your requirements.
Mild Steel or Stainless, 16 gauge (1.5mm).
To a sample pattern or drawing, new build or replacement part.
Our pipe bending equipment allows us to produce virtually any angle of bends in pipes
up to 4 inch diameter.
Swept bends, swelled and slotted pipe ends for overlapping joints.
We can fit standard engine flanges, or cut flanges to mate with existing layouts.
Vertical stacks and polished tail pipes.

Flanges
Our Laser and Waterjet cutting expertise allows us to reproduce most types of standard
and custom flanges in any shape size or thickness, in mild steel or stainless.
We have an extensive data base of existing engine makers flanges which can be
reproduced.
We can also supply threaded pipe ends (M or F).

Silencers
With many years experience in producing spark arresters and catalytic converters,
we can also design and build general purpose silencers for light industrial
equipment and machinery.
Western Tydens silencers are constructed using absorption and reflective techniques.
We can produce virtually any silencer to customerʼs drawings, or from a pattern.
Round or Oval
Units can be manufactured from mild steel or stainless with pipe sizes from 1” to 5”
diameters. We specialise in one offs and small batch quantities. Can be supplied fitted
with heat shield. Select from our standard range or consult us for more information.
Typical applications include generators, tractors, forklifts, vintage vehicles, compressors
and marine applications.

Western Tydens
QUALITY APPROVED
Western Tydens Spark Arresters are designed specifically for preventing the risk of fire, due to the
ignition of flammable materials, caused by spark emission from the exhausts of internal combustion
engines.
The risk of fire caused by exhaust sparks is so high that access to many sites is barred unless engines
are fitted with spark arresters, and many countries have legislation to this effect. The risk is greatest
with diesel engines, where carbon can build-up and be ignited. The high ratio of oxygen which is
present in the exhaust pipe (when the engine goes off load) maintains the ignition of partially burnt
carbon particles which are then discharged as highly dangerous sparks.
Efficient Design
Western Tydens Spark Arresters are designed on the centrifugal principle, which has the effect
of spinning the live carbon particles in the exhaust gas at high velocity on the outer casing, and
retaining them until they have lost energy, rending them inert before discharge.
Most Western Tydens Spark Arresters can replace an existing silencer. They will maintain
sufficient noise attenuation for normal industrial use, with no significant increase in back
pressure. Where further noise attenuation is required, the units can be fitted in series with a
normal silencer. Alternatively, simple add-on units are available for temporary installation.
Low Maintenance
Western Tydens spark arresters are of a non blocking design, so carbon build-up will not
affect back pressure. Apart from routine visual safety checks there is usually no need to clean
them.
ATEX Tested and Approved
All Western Tydens Spark Arresters have been stringently tested for their spark arresting
abilities. Both the Primary and Secondary ranges have been independently tested by SIRA to
EN1834 and when made from 316 stainless steel comply with the requirements of the EUʼs
ATEX Directive. Each spark arrester carries an approval plate with the appropriate ATEX and
CE markings and is supplied with a Certificate of Conformity. (Special installation requirements
may be required for different ranges. Please consult us).
Wide Range
Western Tydens Spark Arresters come in three basic ranges, offering a standard variety of
shapes and sizes for engines up to 500hp (per exhaust bank). We can also design and
manufacture products to directly replace existing silencer/exhaust installations.
Product Sizing
Correct unit should be identified from the engine power rating in Horse Power (KW) Measure
and specify the correct pipe size to fit the existing exhaust line. In general a larger unit will give
a lower back pressure
Construction
Stainless Steel units are from high grade 316 as specified by ATEX. Mild steel units are
finished in heat resistant black paint and have stainless steel internal parts designed as a fail
safe to outlast the outer case.

Spark Arresters are a safety device and the use of the correct product and proper installation is
important and should be treated seriously.

BESPOKE DESIGNS
Based around our existing standard designs, spark arresters can be manufactured to
customerʼs designs, to enable easy form and fit replacement of existing silencers and other
exhaust components.
Different sizes,shapes, round, oval or square with power ranges from 1 to 500 horse power
per exhaust.
For confined space we can produce standard models with side inlet or outlets.
Flanges, inlet and outlet pipes can be fitted with flanges.
Support brackets, fitted to enable the units to be securely mounted.
Heat shields, any unit can be fitted with a protective perforated heat shield.
Special applications, units can be combined with a catalytic converter or
equipped with extra silencing.

Diesel Oxidisation Catalyst (DOC)
Diesel Exhaust Purifiers, from Engine Control Systems, consist of either a ceramic or a metallic
precious metal substrate coated with advanced precious metal catalyst washcoat and are packaged in
a stainless steel housing. These purifiers oxidise hazardous exhaust gases, Carbon Monoxide and
Hydrocarbons to form Carbon Dioxide and Water. The ceramic series also have an effect on reducing
particulate emissions.
Fitting a two way catalytic converter will greatly reduce the toxic effects of diesel exhaust emissions
and the associated health problems caused, and will eliminate the unpleasant smell associated with
diesel exhaust. It is a vital element when using an engine in a confined space.

The temperature of the exhaust gas will determine the effectiveness of the catalyst in reducing the
CO and HC. In general catalysts are more efficient at higher exhaust temperatures and should be
mounted as close to the engine as possible.

Both types of purifier are designed to be quickly and easily mounted in the exhaust line, as close to
the engine manifold as possible. When fitted to a well maintained engine they are virtually maintenance
free.

Catalytic Converters
We offer two ranges of catalysts, Ceramic, which offer the best purification over a wider
temperature range and a reduction of particulate, or Metallic which are a more rugged
construction where vibration and shock maybe an issue. The catalyst should be installed
as close to the engine as possible for maximum heat transfer either with an in line unit, or
as a muffler replacement.
For optimum performance the correct sized catalyst must be used. For simplification with
sizing the engine air intake figure is used, if the engine manufacturers data is not available
use the following calculation, but note a larger model will provide better pollutant reduction
and lower back pressure.
Engine Intake air flow (m3 / Hr) = Engine displacement (litres) x maximum RPM x C

Muffler Conversions
Standard in line units are often unsuitable due to space restrictions, for these applications
custom designed units are available as direct replacements for existing silencers, send us a
drawing or some photos.
We are often able to convert existing silencers to incorporate the DOC. Simply remove the
existing silencer and send it to us and we will either build in the cat or make a new one, this
ensures easy trouble free installation.

Partial Flow Filters
A new generation filter which sits mid way between a Catalytic Converter (DOC) and a
Diesel Particulate Filter. Although not as thorough as a DPF they offer good cleaning with
lower price easy installation and simple operation.
The partial flow, comprises a series of wound substrates, similar to those found in a
Catalyst, which traps the soot and oxides it due to the catalytic coatings, effectively
removing up to 60% of the particulate, and nano particulate matter. It is installed and
operates as a conventional catalyst.
The partial flow filter has the advantage over a wall flow filter in that it offers lower back
pressure, cannot clog and is non-blocking, it is maintenance free.
The substrate is usually built into the silencer and so is a direct replacement for the existing
box, thus ensuring easy installation.

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF)
In addition to the toxic gases in the exhaust stream (eg.CO) which are removed via the
catalytic converter, diesel exhaust contains a large amount of Carbon Particulate or soot,
usually seen as black soot. Not only is this harmful to human health especially the
extremely small nano (PM10), particles, it also creates local environmental and product
contamination.
DPFʼs are designed to trap and collect this soot, typically 90%+ resulting in very clean
exhaust at the tail pipe. This collected soot is either burn off in various ways, to create
CO2, or physically disposed of.
Physical Filtration, Replacement Element type
D80 type
Ideal for light duty and temporary use over short periods. They have a ceramic fibre filter
which traps the soot particles, until full at which stage the element is replaced, typically
every 300 hours. Very simple and easy to fit, no changes required to the exhaust system
and will offer an 80%+ efficiency. Will not have any effect on CO and HC toxins. Can be
used with any type of diesel.

Particulate Filters
Combifilter Active Regeneration
The Unikat Combifilter is an integrated diesel particulate filter and silencer which typically
removes 95%+ of the particulates from the engine exhaust and when combined with a
catalyst will meet the most stringent requirement. The soot is stored in the filter until full,
the equipment is then plugged into an electrical source where the internal heating element
raises the temperature to the point at which the soot burns off. This regeneration process
is typically done on a daily basis and can take either one hour or overnight.
The standard system consists of the Combifilter which is installed on the equipment and a
wall mounted regeneration station consisting of an air pump and electronics for monitoring
and creating the regeneration. An alternative exchange system is available consisting of a
two filter arrangement, a clean filter replaces a dirty filter which is regenerated off the
equipment.
The Combifilter is a semi porous silicon carbide ceramic block which allows clean gas to
pass through but traps the soot. An electrical heater raises the temperature above 600
degrees during regeneration which effectively burns the soot in the presence of air and it
passes out through the wall as CO2.
The Combifilter is ideal for equipment such as fork lift trucks, can be used with high sulphur
diesel.

The Combifilter is available as model type K which has an 8 hour regeneration cycle, or
type S with a 40 minute regeneration cycle, both types use a Silicon Carbide filter block.

Passive Regeneration
Purifilter
Self Regenerating Filters, these use a silicon carbide block as with the
Combifilter but with a catalytic coating. At sustained temperatures of
around 280 degrees the soot trapped in the filter will naturally burn in
the presence of the catalytic coating, into CO2 and be released through
the wall. The catalytic coating will also reduce the CO and HC.
These filters are intended for permanent installation on vehicles and
machinery which is working constantly under load where high exhaust
temperatures are to be found, and should only be used with low sulphur
