Schools, through their curriculum, are legally bound to actively promote the fundamental British values.

At Netherhall St James Infant and Nursery School we take opportunities to actively promote British Values through daily collective worship, the curriculum and whole school systems and structures.

Democracy

Democracy is an important value at our school. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our School Council. The election of members of the School Council are based on pupil votes in each class.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws and rules, whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country are consistently reinforced. Our own system for behaviour is aligned to an agreed set of codes and if children are given verbal warnings this is always set against the agreed school behaviour code. These codes are displayed as Mission Statements in each classroom which are written and signed by all class members.

Pupils are encouraged to think why we have laws and consider the consequences when laws are broken.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are actively encouraged to make choices at our school knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. Pupils are taught personal freedoms and are supported in how to exercise these safely e.g. through our e-safety teaching. Pupils are given the freedom to make choices e.e signing up for extra-curricular clubs and selecting rewards.

Mutual Respect

Our school ethos and behaviour policy are based around the core Christian Values of Love,

Compassion, Trust and Respect which determine how we operate as a community at

Netherhall St James Infant and Nursery School. Collective Worship is based on a wider spectrum of Christian Values which are central to our understanding and respect of others.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

This is achieved through enhancing pupils’ understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them the opportunities to experience such diversity in our local community. Collective worship involving discussions around prejudices and bullying are supported by learning in RE and PSHE. That and the wider curriculum provide many opportunities in each year group to explore other cultures, faiths and beliefs.
