Third Edition ADRs – Applicability Summary
Goods Vehicles
1.
This Table shows:
a.
the national standards (Australian Design Rules) currently in force for new model vehicles
and the vehicle categories to which they are applicable, as at the date this Applicability
Summary is published (see footer and note *);
b.
the dates on which new national standards will come into force and the vehicle categories
to which they will be applicable (light green highlighted);
c.
earlier revisions of the national standards that may be accepted as equivalent to the
standards in force for new model vehicles (refer to each relevant standard’s list of
acceptable prior rules); and
d.
the national standards that have been superseded by other standards (light yellow
highlighted) or withdrawn with no direct replacement (light red highlighted).
2.
ADR notation:
ADR X/00 indicates the original version of ADR X
ADR X/01 indicates the first revised version of a standard where the amendment increases in
stringency, includes additional vehicle categories, or changes content significantly. ADR X/02 is
the second revision, and so on.
ADR X/…, the ellipsis … indicates the latest version.
3.
Vehicle Category Codes:
Codes for vehicle categories and definitions are in Definitions and Vehicle Categories and can be
found on web page: <http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/adr_online.aspx>
(The UNECE Vehicle Category Codes are shown in brackets in the following table.)
NA - LIGHT GOODS VEHICLE - A goods vehicle with a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ not exceeding 3.5
tonnes.
NB - MEDIUM GOODS VEHICLE - A goods vehicle with a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ exceeding 3.5
tonnes but not exceeding 12.0 tonnes.
NC - HEAVY GOODS VEHICLE - A goods vehicle with a ‘Gross Vehicle Mass‘ exceeding 12.0
tonnes.
4.
The table is for guidance only. Users must refer to the relevant standard for the
circumstances under which the standard is mandatory, optional or prohibited.
5. Symbols used in the Table:

described.
**
Application date may be different for category types. See relevant standard
for details.
6. In addition to the above national standards, Australian Design Rule – Harmonisation, facilitates the
automatic acceptance of the latest version of UNECE regulations that have been adopted as
alternative standards within the ADRs and have been ‘applied’ by Australia under the UNECE
1958 Agreement. Refer http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2012L00336 for more information.
