School site. Staff were joined by Whole Foods,
Coca-Cola, UPS, Short Leash Hot Dogs, KDKB,
Recyclesaurus, Mayor Greg Stanton, and over 250
+ volunteers who partnered up with each of our 15
on-site partners to dig, plant, paint and build. The
day was an overwhelming success, and the result
of months of preparation. We are proud to say
that the PHX Renews site is now open to the
public daily from 7am to 6pm, even as we
continue to develop the site.
This is particularly important for our community
gardeners. Prior to Activation Day, we publicized
community garden space on our social media, and
were able to confirm and commit twelve
community gardeners. After Activation Day, we
were flooded with requests, and now anticipate
having over 60 community gardeners on site.
Suffice it to say, the demand has quickly
surpassed our supply of raised planter beds.
However, we are working furiously to keep up
with the requests and are pleased to be able to
showcase the desire for garden space in the heart
of Phoenix.
We also had two big announcements on Activation
Day. The first was a new partnership with Hayden
Flour Mills. Hayden Flour Mills has committed to
growing ancient and native wheat on three acres
of PHX Renews. The resultant flour will then be
supplied to nearby restaurants as a local urban
organic product. Additionally, Hayden Flour Mills
plans to incorporate historical education,
harvesting and milling demonstrations and events
in the fields. We are excited to have them on
board and see rows of wheat growing within the
City.

Our final announcement is that PHX Renews is
expanding! A goal from the onset, the PHX Renews
concept is meant to disperse throughout the City
and address the 42% of vacant land that makes up
the City of Phoenix. We have partnered with local
business Shine Coffee and their property owners to
provide a quarter acre community pocket park
near Central Ave and Vernon. We are excited to
begin work and provide another beneficial space
for community members of Phoenix.
We have been thrilled by the business,
community, and media support for our project.
We invite everyone to stop by our PHX Renews
site(s) and get an early look at a new component
of City of Phoenix life.
Thank you to our awesome sponsors:
