The use of Crumb Rubber for bitumen modification in the form of CRMB (Crumb
Rubber Modified Bitumen) is quite common in India. In normal form, the
compatibility of Crumb Rubber and Bitumen is quite low and the two normally
do not make a homogeneous mix. One of the major issues with currently
available CRMB has been homogeneity and storage stability, as Crumb Rubber
particles separate from bitumen, causing rapid deterioration in the bitumen
quality. To address the issue, Shell Mexphalte CRMB has been developed after
extensive R & D. The new product uses high performance additives and a special
manufacturing process. Shell Mexphalte CRMB is highly homogeneous and stable
over a long period of time.

Rutting due to permanent deformation
To achieve this, special stabilising additives
are used and a special manufacturing
process is adopted. The result is a high
performance bituminous binder, with unique
properties that are consistent over different
batches, homogenous and stable over a
long period of time.
Long lasting effectiveness
There is no separation of crumb rubber,
other additives and modifiers from Shell
Mexphalte CRMB, even after transport and
storage at plant over a few days. This makes
the product highly effective for a long period
of time. Shell Mexphalte CRMB properties
were also checked in a Long Distance
Transport (LDT)study. This involved loading a
tanker, travelling the product 1100 km over
8 days and checking it at the end. Shell
Mexphalte CRMB retained its properties
even after travelling such a long distance
over a long period of time.
Shell Mexphalte CRMB applications
Main Applications:
Shell Mexphalte CRMB is normally used for
dense and semi-dense bituminous mixes,
wearing course and binder course of the
pavement. It can be used for SAM and
SAMI layers to prevent reflective cracking. It
can also be used for premix carpet for low
to medium volume roads.
Special Applications:
High viscosity of Shell Mexphalte CRMB
makes it suitable to be used for high-end
applications such as Chip Seal, Spray Seal,
SMA (Stone Matrix Asphalt) and Porous or
Drainage Asphalt.

hazard or produce any harmful fumes or
odour, when used in the recommended
application and good standards of industrial
and personal hygiene are maintained.
Shell Mexphalte CRMB allows proper
disposal of waste tyres, which otherwise
need to be disposed in landfills or through
other environmentally harmful means. Use
of scrap tyres in CRMB allows better waste
management without environmental pollution
and maximizes conservation of natural
resources.
