HOMEWORK POLICY Homework at Taylor Hicks School will be utilized for such purposes as: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Completing regular classroom assignments. Reinforcing the learning of basic skills. Making up work missed during absences. Learning to work independently and develop self-discipline. Developing better study skills. Encouraging and developing creativity. Enriching learning experiences. Enhancing cooperation between home and school. Kindergarten – Our homework program will begin in September. Homework packets will be sent home on Mondays and are due on Fridays. In Kindergarten, homework is used to reinforce skill learned in class. 1st grade – Homework for primary grades should be limited activities that allow for completion of unfinished work such as reading stories, practicing spelling words, learning number facts, etc. Enrichment activities would also be appropriate. In the primary grades, homework will rarely exceed 30 minutes. 2nd grade – Read with an adult a minimum of 75 minutes each week. Return reading calendar (log) each week. Study addition and subtraction facts to the number 18 five minutes per day. Study spelling words daily for 10 minutes. Finish work sent home because it was not completed in class. 3rd grade – When homework is assigned to 3rd grade students, it is expected to be turned in conscientiously on the due date. Homework will be accepted one day late, but only for 50% of the earned grade. If homework is turned in on time, but is incomplete or is not done to the best of the student’s ability, the student will work in the study center each recess to complete the assignments satisfactorily. If homework is not turned in to at least meet the “one day late/50% policy”, the student will complete the assignment in the study center at recesses until the work is satisfactorily completed, but the student will receive no grade. 4th grade – Homework will consist of a weekly spelling list and any unfinished class work. A spelling test will be given at the end of each week. We also encourage each child to read for at least 30 minutes each night. Fourth graders will also be expected to study for unit tests. Study guides may be sent home before certain content area tests to help them review. Late work will NOT be accepted. If a child is absent, we will work with that child to get them caught up in class and allow extra time to finish homework. 5th grade – When homework is assigned, it must be turned in at the beginning of class on the day it is due. If a student does not finish the entire homework assignment, it is graded as is. If the assignment work is not turned in, the student will receive no credit for that assignment. Late work will not be accepted. It is extremely important that students take the responsibility to get their work in on time. Students with excused absences will have one day to make up the homework for each day they are absent. Note: Parents are encouraged to request homework when their child is absent due to either illness or a vacation. Homework will be available in the office by 3:00 pm the day after the homework is requested. This twenty-four hour period will allow our busy teachers to gather the necessary homework and get it to the office. Note: The study center will be used at the teacher’s discretion to finish late homework during recess times
