Rubberclad EPDM
The System Concept
Building facades are becoming evermore complex in
their design. The modern building façade may incorporate Architectural Curtain Walling, Stone Cladding,
Porous Clay Tiles and other water permeable finishes.
the supply of EPDM systems. We can give advice
to Architects and Engineers at design stage and offer Project Specific installation guidance and on site
assistance to Builders and Sub Contractors.
Where such permeable finishes are selected , Rubberclad EPDM is the ideal waterproofing barrier.
Rubberclad EPDM membrane is completely impermeable to water and water vapour and can be successfully bonded to practically any substrate.
There is a Rubberclad EPDM product for every application, from wide rolls to completely waterproof a
façade to narrow strips used to seal the joint between
window frames and adjoining concrete panels.
Moy Materials Ltd. have many years experience in
Rubberclad EPDM Waterproofing - The Advantages.
Environmentally Friendly - Rubberclad EPDM uses
recycled materials in its manufacture and may be broken down and reused in the rubber crumb industry. It
does not contain any harmful environmental pollutants.
Tough - Rubberclad is puncture resistant and can
withstand abuse that tears other products.
Easy To Install - Rubberclad EPDM requires no special tools to install. Moy Materials Ltd. provide installer training and most contractors use their own
operatives to fit the membrane.
Waterproof & Airtight - Rubberclad EPDM easily
allows the creation of a water proof barrier and to
prevents air leakage.
Economical Solutions - Create a tough, impermeable
barrier at a fraction of the cost of traditional waterproofing systems.
Durability - Proven to last over 50 years, Rubberclad
is resistant to UV light and does not decay or rot. It
will remain flexible and elastic through extremes of
temperature.

Rubberclad EPDM - The System Components.
RUBBERCLAD EPDM MEMBRANE.
Available in rolls of 200, 300, 500, 1000 and 1500mm Thickness 0.7mm as standard, 0.5mm and 1.0mm are
also held in stock. Special application sometimes demand that a thicker membrane be supplied, in these
cases we can supply membrane up to 4mm thick. We can also supply larger pre cut panels so that a single
seamless piece may be used to cover an entire elevation.
SELF ADHESIVE RUBBERCLAD EPDM.
Self Adhesive Rubberclad has a release paper which is pulled away to expose a sticky butyl adhesive base
which bonds well to steel, concrete and timber. Moy Materials Ltd. keep this product in 240mm wide rolls
which is the optimum roll width for the glazing industry specialists. We also supply strips of partially self adhesive Rubberclad to Curtain Walling specialists who wish to have a membrane bonded to their units but
leaving 200 - 300mm hanging loose so that the main contractor may seal to specialised cladding panels after
a period of time.
BONDING ADHESIVE BA 007. (5 litre Can with reusable lid).
This is a contact adhesive used for making overlap joints and for bonding Rubberclad to various substrates.
It is applied by brush or roller to both mating surfaces. BA007 is a neoprene solvent based adhesive which
is brushed onto both the substrate and the Rubberclad membrane, after the solvent evaporates the surfaces
are pressed together resulting in a very strong bond.
FAÇADE SEALANT FS 011. (600ml foil wrapped sachet).
This adhesive and sealant paste is used to bond Rubberclad to various substrates and to seal overlaps. It is
very easy to apply and gives the user time to position membrane before curing. As FS011 paste is also a waterproofing sealant it may be used to seal penetration points when mechanical fasteners are used, such as
insulation fixings which could potentially allow water ingress. Sold in boxes of 12, each box comes complete
with 12 clean nozzles designed to fit the bulk gun we supply.
LAP SEALANT LS 009.
Used to seal exposed edges at joints and laps, it is particularly important to use where Rubberclad is laid flat
and may hold standing water.
SPLICING ADHESIVE SA 008.
Used to make watertight joints where water will rest on the membrane e.g. gutter lining.
CLAMPING BARS.
Galvanised steel bars, pre punched or plain, used to clamp Rubberclad in position. Typically 3 metres in
length and punched at 150mm centres.

Rubberclad EPDM Installation - A Case Study.
The first step in the façade installation was to fix a
plywood board acting as a carrier for the EPDM.
When this was in position the Rubberclad EPDM
was installed by bonding with contact adhesive.
The installation of the Rubberclad EPDM is remarkably straight forward and in this instance was
carried out by the main contractors operatives after
an on site training session by Moy Materials Ltd.
This building in the Fonthill Business Park, Dublin
was designed as a steel portal frame building which
was to be finished with a 40mm limestone cladding
supported upon an aluminium rail system. The design team required a waterproofing barrier onto
which the insulation and cladding stone could be fitted. The designers were concerned not only with ensuring the building was waterproof but also that the
building was air tight to eliminate heat loss and prevent draughts.
When consulted by the design team Moy Materials
Ltd. advised the use of Rubberclad EPDM membrane, as it could fulfil the air tightness and waterproofing function required and it also allowed the
elimination of vertical and horizontal DPC’s at window and door opes. In addition as it is compatible
with practically all roof waterproofing membranes,
an air tight seal could be made at the roof / wall interface, thus reducing the energy lost through air
leakage.
When the Rubberclad EPDM had been installed
the thermal insulation was applied, again being
bonded with adhesive to minimise the possibility of
water ingress along the fixing path.
The glazing supplier used a window unit to which
the EPDM membrane could be bonded. This was
achieved by leaving 100mm of Rubberclad mem-
brane free around all opes. This ensured that the
elevation was both air tight and waterproof.
The brackets which hold the aluminium cladding
rails were the only items requiring a penetration
through the Rubberclad membrane. This penetration was made waterproof by carefully sealing each
fastener with FS011 sealing paste and then covering the bracket plate with a piece of membrane.

Rubberclad - Different Methods of Installation.
Few waterproofing systems are as versatile as the
Rubberclad EPDM membrane. As new and interesting projects arise, each with their own unique requirements, innovative methods of attaching the
membrane and fitting the subsequent cladding systems are devised. Broadly speaking, the fitting of
Rubberclad EPDM falls into three main categories.
1.
Fully bonded Method
2.
Partially bonded Method
3.
Mechanically Clamped Method
The Partially Bonded Method.
The Rubberclad EPDM is partially adhered to the
substrate using FS011 adhesive, which is applied in an
“S” shaped pattern or in a series of lines approximately 500mm apart. The Rubberclad membrane is
then pressed onto this adhesive and pressed home
with a pressure roller. Overlaps are sealed with FS011
adhesive / sealant. The insulation system or rails for
the cladding system are then installed, giving the
benefit of mechanically clamping the membrane in
position.
The Mechanically Clamped Method.
These methods are briefly explained below:
The Fully Bonded Method.
The Rubberclad EPDM is fully adhered to a block
work, concrete or timber substrate using contact adhesive BA007. This method is generally used where
the insulation layer is to be bonded to the EPDM.
Rubber to rubber overlaps are sealed using contact
adhesive. Insulation is generally supplied with a tissue face to provide the best possible adhesion to the
Rubberclad membrane.
The Rubberclad membrane is allowed to hang vertically over the building façade. A metal clamping bar is
installed at parapet level to hold the membrane in position. Subsequent clamping bars are installed at each
floor level. The membrane overlaps are sealed with
FS011 and all mechanical fasteners are made water
tight with FS011.
Full method statements and installers drawings are
available from Moy Materials Ltd. We also offer advice to designers and installers on the most appropriate method of installation to suit individual projects.
