A: It’s not required but you can if it fits your design. Q: I have a follow up question regarding the ADA accessibility. Should the students want to include a mezzanine that's accessible by stair only ‐ will this be seen as against ADA code? I would hate to have them design meeting or collaboration spaces on a mezzanine level and not be accessible to all visitors. That said, should the students design equally adequate meeting space on the floor, would it be acceptable to make meeting space on the mezzanine level? A: You will need to comply with regulatory building codes for Los Angeles, California. Q: My students are working on the project and doing site analysis. We just want to be utmost clear that the space is the top floor. It is little different architecturally than the rest of the building and when we were researching the building, it said it is the event center. A: You are correct. You are given the 32nd floor which is the top floor of the building. The 30th floor is used as an event center and available to occupants of the building and other outside companies for a fee. The 30th floor’s usage should not be considered or used for the purposes of planning the 32nd floor. Q: One of my students wants to use shipping containers to build a mezzanine. Would it be possible to bring a shipping container in through the side of the building by removing glass and mullions? A: Unfortunately, with this being the 32nd floor of the building that would not be feasible. 1
NEXT Student Design Competition 2016 Q: Is the catering kitchen NIC? The scope is a bit unclear on the floorplan. A: This is to be considered NIC and should remain as is. This is used for internal staff only (non‐public space) and is not to be considered as part of the WorkCafe. Q: #10 in the Rules section of your website does not seem to work. It is supposed to link to a client mission and interests document but does not. A: This is actually directing the students to the competition website. Once on the website, the information is in the resources section. In the resource section you will see (Contest Overview). In there, you will find the Client Overview + Program. I realize how this is confusing and we will rename that link to Client Overview + Program. Program.pdf Q: Is there a requirements as to where the NEXT logo must appear within the designed spaces? At the reception desk? Elsewhere? A: The student designed logo can be placed anywhere that meets the students design intent. We do not have a requirement for location, just that a logo is created. Q: Can a mezzanine be placed over the mechanical room or does the ceiling for that space extend to the roof? A: No, you can’t place a mezzanine in that particular location due to site restrictions; however you can add a mezzanine in another location if it meets your design intent. Q: Do we assume that the ceiling heights of elevators, stairs, restrooms, catering kitchen and utility closets are the full 22' height? A: There is a drop ceiling in the existing restrooms, catering kitchen and utility closet that is approximately 10’‐0” A.F.F. The elevator cab has a separate ceiling at 10’‐0” A.F.F. Q: For determining the SF for the mezzanine, do we use the 11,300 sq ft of usable space or the total 12,885 sq ft of the footprint of the space? A: You will need to comply with regulatory building codes for Los Angeles, California. Q: Does the 30"x48" workspace for designers need to be attached to the desk? A: No, you are free to design the best solution that meets your design intent and meets the program requirements. Q: Can you confirm the Column spacing from center to center? A: Please refer to the CAD file for column spacing and dimensions. QUESTIONS + ANSWERS – Questions submitted through September 19, 2016
Q: Can the wall adjacent to the elevators be removed? A: Yes, you are free to remove if this meets your design intent. Q: Can skylights be added? A: No, though this is the top floor, to be consistent with the actual building site it has a helipad on the roof which is very common in the L.A. market. Q: Can a mezzanine be added? If so, would it need an elevator or just stairs? A: Yes, considering you have a 22’‐0” clearance you can add an internal mezzanine if this meets your design intent; however, no elevator – stair access only. 2
NEXT Student Design Competition 2016 Q: The 8' high window with the 2" high mullion and another 8' high window above it, does not equal the 22' high measurement to the deck of the above floor. Should we assume a 5'‐10" solid section right below the above deck? A: You are correct, it is a solid wall above the two 8’‐0” sections of glass. Q: Is a bibliography required for the inspirational images and/or the evidence based design? A: No, a bibliography is not necessary; however, please review a few of the submissions from last year’s competition on our website www.steelcase.com/design4next (look in the 2015 Winners and Judges section and the winner and semi‐
finalist tabs and click on view work to see how each of these students represented their inspiration and research. All of these are different approaches and all are appropriate). Q: In regards to SF, how accurate are the areas suppose to be? A: The areas need to remain within the approximate range of SF suggested; however, slight variations are OK as long as each of the required spaces are included in the plan and program needs are fulfilled. Q: Can we extend the floor beyond the curtain glass, to create an outdoor space? A: No, this wouldn’t be within the scope of this project. Q: What kind of model room? Would the model room need plumbing? A: Plumbing is not needed for this space. The program document list the tools, activities, and use of this space. Q: Can we suggest different colors or materials for the Steelcase furniture? A: Yes Q: Can the kitchen be moved to another location and use the area for something else? A: No, for the scope of this project, this will remain in place. This is used for internal staff only (non‐public space) and is not to be considered as part of the WorkCafe. 3
