International Student Enrollment
According to 2014-15 data from the Institute of International Education (IIE) Open Doors 2015 report, U-M
ranked thirteenth nationally among all universities (eighth among public research institutions) in terms of
“hosting” international students. The Open Doors report includes both enrolled students and those on postcompletion Optional Practical Training (full-time work authorization after completion of studies). Therefore,
Open Doors 2015 indicates that U-M “hosted” 7,423 international students in Fall Semester, 2014 and not the
5,990 reported as enrolled by the International Center based on Fall Semester 2014 data from the Office of the
Registrar. In Fall Semester 2015, U-M enrolled 6270 international students from 124 countries.
Note: The number of enrolled students reported by the International Center differs slightly from the number reported by the Office of the
Registrar in Report #118 because the International Center report does not include student in pending permanent resident status.

International Employees (H-1B, J-1, Others)
International employees are those individuals who have University appointments and are here on non-immigrant
(temporary) visas. The IC handles all immigration paperwork for those on H-1B and J-1 visas and provides a
wide range of services and programs for these individuals and their families. The IC also assists University
departments by filing immigrant visa petitions for foreign nationals offered tenure track teaching positions and
refers to outside counsel all others who are offered permanent employment at U-M.

Questions about education abroad data may be directed to Amy Conger, Assistant Vice Provost for Global and
